Yuri Mahatma Quartet #UVJF2019
Born in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, jazz guitarist/ composer Yuri Mahatma is one among the shortlist of Straight- ahead Jazz/ post-bop guitarists in the country. Started playing guitar since he was 14-year old.
His first influenced was his sister, who already became a professional jazz singer by the time Yuri started playing guitar. From whom also he heard so many great standard jazz songs from the tapes. Later on, Yuri had a chance to study from a famous Dutch jazz guitarist, Martijn van Iterson in Leiden-Holland during 1991.
Now Yuri is residing in Bali island, Indonesia. Making music, performing here and there both in the country as well as a broad such as in Italy, Germany, Holland, Czech Republic, Japan and Australia. Yuri is the leader of his recent quartet project, under the name Yuri Mahatma, “Straight and Stretch”, which is enriched with unique traditional Balinese rhythmic style played by the rhythm section yet still allows the group to explore far beyond the traditional music boundaries and limitations. They have their own interpretation of straight-a-head-jazz.
The Quartet are Yuri Mahatma (guitar), Astrid Sulaiman (piano) who has developed her playing from a strict classical music background into freedom in jazz. Helmy Agustrian (bass) who is one of the finest and busiest double bass player in Bali whose playing remind us to the great Ray Brown. Last but not least Gustu Brahmanta (drums), a rare drummer who grew up with strong traditional Balinese gamelan culture. Since it was formed in 2017, the quartet has performed at Castlemaine Jazz Festival (VA-Australia, June 2018), Mauroco Bar, (Castlemaine, Australia), The Junktion (Melbourne) International Ubud Village Jazz Festival (Aug 2018), The Papandayan Jazz Festival (Bandung, October 2018), Ngayogjazz (Nov 2018), Mataram Jazz & World Music Festival (Dec 2018), Casaluna Ubud, Vincent’s Candidasa and many more.
