So, there I was, sitting under a tree at a Phoenix public library, shooting a video for my blog when I heard the loud rumble of a riding mower coming near. I didn't look up, expecting the mower to breeze on by me, but it stopped.
Hey, can you help me? the man called from his seat. I was wondering what I could do to help a parks and rec guy with yard maintenance, but I jumped up and said, well, maybe, what do you need?
He needed help with his phone, and I guess because he saw me holding up my smart phone while shooting a video, I was one smart person. Ha! I couldn't do anything with his phone problem...but it was the beginning of a delightful and inspiring conversation among two strangers who instantly seemed like old friends.
Richard has lived in Phoenix all his life. He shared that he hasn't traveled much out of the state, but that he knows every nook and cranny of Arizona. His eyes sparkled as he told how he and his two sons love to go camping, fishing, and hunting...something they do as often as they can.
We talked about being older than our hearts feel...we shared how nature inspires us...our old souls connected.
When Richard was 18, he decided he wanted to be a meat cutter. After completing the required courses, he got his first job on the slaughtering floor. I grimaced as I recalled the stories I've read about this kind of job. He worked his way up to meat cutter, then to a management position and all was going really well for him -- good salary, good benefits, etc. But, when a cheaper labor force from Mexico began to infiltrate the industry, his boss sadly told him he could stay on -- but at a much lower salary.
Seeing the writing on the wall, he left the job there to work with the Phoenix Parks & Rec Department -- a job that just fell into his lap at the right time.
His presence in that department has been uplifting and inspiring. His boss stopped by as we were talking and you could tell Richard was one of those employees every boss desires to have. Their friendly banter told me Richard was a treasure to all in that department.
As we talked about the beauty of the Southwest and how I was so looking forward to my first visit to the Grand Canyon, he broke out in song.
Richard has six years left until retirement...until he will be free to take off on the backroads of Arizona anytime he chooses.
I asked him,
What would you do right now, if time and money were no object?
His reply was as big as the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eye...I would TRAVEL THE WORLD!
Where would you go first? I asked.
To Alaska! To see the majesty of the land, the animals that roam there. That's first on my list!
I can picture Richard packing up his vehicle...camping equipment and all to explore and discover Alaska. I can see tears filling his eyes when he beholds new sights, when he spots an elk along the way. I can hear him singing please, come to Alaska for the summer.
Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals; cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these, if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built. ~ James Allen

GRAND CANYON HELICOPTER TOUR EXPERIENCE - Hoover Dam Sky Walk Colorado River | Papillon | Las Vegas
The Grand Canyon can be best explored by foot, by air or on the waters of the Colorado River. We chose the easiest way to save time and had an unforgettable experience flying over the Grand Canyon.
The helicopter tour with Papillon Helicopters was well-worth the price and we recommend that if you want to see the Grand Canyon like never before, book a helicopter tour. Certain helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon even permit landing on the canyon floor where you can soak in some of the natural architecture for real in person.
Best time to book a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon - winter time (early morning or late afternoon)
Average tour duration - 4 hours (This was the VIP Express tour with Papillon Helicopters which included a ticket to the glass Skywalk).
