Last Flight McDowell Sonoran Preserve 4K Scottsdale Arizona | by Blog Your Niche
Starting Oct 20, 2016, Scottsdale's 30,000-acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve will soon be off-limits to hobbyist drone fliers under a new ordinance approved Tuesday by the City Council. I met with friends and hobbyist from Phoenix Drone User Group last Saturday, Oct 15. It was a fun day to fly quadcopters for the last time in the area.

Scottsdale is a desert city in Arizona east of state capital Phoenix. It's known for its spa resorts and golf courses, including TPC Scottsdale. Farther north, trails wind through McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a desertscape of hills, rock formations and cacti. Nearby is Taliesin West, architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s former home and studio. Downtown's Old Town Scottsdale has 1920s buildings and 19th-century olive trees.
Scottsdale is home to many galleries, high quality resorts, and golf courses. It is also one of the wealthier parts of the Phoenix Metro Area. High end shopping destinations are one of the primary attractions of the city. For example, the Fashion Square Mall is near downtown Scottsdale and is one of the biggest malls in the United States. The extensive galleries to the west of the downtown also offer upscale shopping and strolling. The galleries in this area display works both from local artists and from around the world.
The Old Town section of Scottsdale is to the east of the gallery district. It showcases swanky upscale style as well as a caricature of the gruff American West. Well over half the shops are gift shops. However, it is fun enough for a browse in a Disneyland sort of way.
Both Old Town and Downtown Scottsdale possess an dazing array of bars, nightclubs, pool clubs and chic eateries. Nicknamed the Beverly Hills of the Desert, Scottsdale is second to none in terms of opportunity for high-end debauchery.
The valley of the sun has over 130 miles of canals. Most of them were built in the last 100 years to provide water for the irrigation of farm land. However, now that the valley is much less agrarian the canals are primarily used to carry away storm water. Some are also used to generate hydroelectric power.
These often overlooked gems are open to the public. One can take in the beautiful desert scenery and fresh air while strolling along them. They provide walkers, joggers, and bikers with a nice refuge from traffic. But don't try swimming in the canals, aside from being an obvious bad idea because the sides are so steep it is also illegal, along with motorized vehicles.

McDowell Mountain | Epic climb, crowded descent on Lost Dog Wash, Old Jeep, and Sunrise | 12/29/2019
13 miles and ~1700 feet of climbing on the South side of the McDowell Mountain range. Not the snooze-fest I was expecting when I signed up, but well worth it for the views.
Started off at the Lost Dog Wash trail head, up Lost Dog Wash trail to the lookout, back down by way of Old Jeep Trail and Ringtail, and then one hell of a climb up Sunrise Trail. Yet again, the descent was a little above my pay grade, and made worse by having to stop every hundred feet for hikers. Still a great ride with great people, despite the 39 degree starting temperature.

Hiking The Mcdowell Mountains AZ
Here is some footage I took of me and my friend Max hiking down the Mcdowell mountains in PHX Arizona. The video can be shaky at times, but it was the best I could do when jogging down a trail holding a camera haha. I just figured it would be cool to let people who don't live here see what the AZ desert can look like. We hiked up and then back down the same side. The entire trail is massive, the most I have done of it is like 5 miles.

Brown's Ranch Technical Area
This video features a good portion of the technical section in Brown's Ranch located in the far norther reaches of Scottsdale, AZ. Groomed single track makes up a majority of this trail system and typically sees heavy traffic on the weekends, except for the technical area. Once you get past Cathedral Rock and hit stagecoach trail, the crowd disappears and you can enjoy the peace, quiet and gorgeous scenery of the sonoran desert.
Located just north of Dynamite Blvd on Alma School road, it is a short distance from anywhere in the valley. The variety of trails offers everything for the novice rider all the way up to the experience rider. You can spend hours riding out here and still not hit all of the trails in the system.
