Sangam & Mekedatu | Kanakapura, Bangalore, Karnataka
Sangama is the place near Bangalore in Kanakapura district, Karnataka where two rivers Kaveri and Arkavati join and flow through Mekedatu.
This place is around 95 KM from Bangalore and good for one day trip. Its good idea to start early and reach there by 9:30 AM to avoid rush during weekends. To visit this place from Bengaluru, first go to Kanakapura then take a left turn for Sangama/Mekedatu. My recommendation is to go there during monsoon and avoid summer because less water in the river will disappoint you.
To visit Mekedatu from Sangama, you need to take coracle to cross the river and then take a Bus ride for few kilometers.

Kaveri Sangama and Mekedatu, kanakapura, Karnataka
Sangam and Mekedatu- A single day trip from Bangalore
Mekedatu is a location along Kaveri in Kanakapura Taluk. Sangama is the place where Arkavati merges with Kaveri
How to Reach There !
If you are going from Bangalore you have to first go to
Kanakapura and then take the road going to Sangama/ Mekedatu.
Although there are many busses to Kanakapura, there will be fewer
busses to Mekedatu. It may be convenient to go by own vehicle.
After going to Kanakapura you have to leave the highway at
Kanakapura and take a left turn for Mekedatu. The road here
looks like a narrow lane (although widened afterwards) and is
not easily recognized. It is better to ask people there for confirmation.
Once you get the road, you have to move straight without any confusion.
Bangalore to Kanakapura 60kms, Kanakapura to Sangama 30+ Kms,
Sangama to Mekedatu 4 kms, total around 100 Kms (one side).
Sangama the Confluence of Rivers !
Sangama is the confluence of two rivers – Arkavathi and Kaveri
(Cauvery). In Summer season there will be less water and you can
easily walk inside the river. In rainy season there will be more water
with heavy flow. Both the seasons are enjoyable although differently.
Near Sangam you will find some signboards warning you about the
crocodiles and dangers in water. You should be careful about your
safety. You can park you vehicle there near the road side and pay
a parking fee.
Mekedatu – The Goats Leap !
Mekedatu is just 4 kms from Sangam. You must cross the river
at sangam in order to visit mekedatu. If it is summer, there will be less
water (as in the picture above) and you can walk through the river.
In other seasons you have to cross the river by boats.
As Sangam and Mekedatu are close to each other, both the places
have to be combined in one single visit. 'Mekedatu' means 'goat's
leap' in Kannada language.
Once you cross the river, you have two options to go to mekedatu.
You can take the old noisy bus or take a walk to mekedatu depending
on your physical strength, money and time. Walking will be more
enjoyable though, bus will be faster. The bus will take 50 rupees
per head. The same bus is shuttling between Sangam and Mekedatu.
The frequency depends on the availability of people.

Mekedatu is a natural wonder made by River Kaveri flowing in a deep gorge at Kanakapura taluk of Ramanagara district of Karnataka which is a must see place though little dangerous. It is an ideal one day trip from Bangalore being about 110 kms. far. First we have to reach Sangam after coming to Kanakapura and taking a left. Sangam is the confluence of two rivers Kaveri and Arkavathi which has to be crossed by walking in waist deep water in summer when water is less or by ferry boats in rainy season when water is full. It is thrilling and enthralling experience to cross Sangam after which a bus takes us to Mekedatu which is about four kms. from Sangam. At Mekedatu, Kaveri flows between big rocks in a narrow deep gorge making a spectacular scene. It seems a goat was seen leaping across the gorge and hence was named Mekedatu, meaning goat's leap in Kannada language.

Bangalore Days | Mekedatu - Sangam | Via Kanakpura
At a distance of 93 Kms from Bangalore (via Kanakapura) Sangama and Mekedatu are two lovely places situated nearby. This is one of the famous weekend getaways from Bangalore. Sangama is the place where Arakavathi river merges with River Kaveri. From this point, about 3.5 kilometers downstream, Mekedatu is a place where river Kaveri flows through a deep and narrow gorge.
The best time to visit the place is between September and December. A diversion is required after Kanakapura (33 km) via Dodda Alahalli & Hegganuru towards Sangama to reach Mekedatu. Limited public transportation facilities from Kanakapura, preferably, take your own transportation. You can drive your vehicle up to Sangama. To visit Mekadatu, cross the river at Sangam on a boat and take public / private transportation to Mekadatu (3.5 kms).
No transportation is available after 5:30 PM.

Mekedatu: Potentially dangerous spot but perfect for angling, Karnataka
Mekedatu is a location along Kaveri in Kanakapura Taluk. Sangama is the place where Arkavati merges with Kaveri. From this point, about 3.5 kilometers downstream, the river Kaveri flows through a deep gorge so narrow that one would think that a goat can leap across it ('Mekedatu' means 'goat's leap' in Kannada). It is not really so narrow and no goat commonly found in that part of India could cross that distance in a single leap. It is about 100 km from Bangalore via Kanakapura. The name comes from an incident which is believed to have been witnessed by herdsmen in that area a long time ago. It is said that a goat being chased by a tiger made a desperate attempt to save its life by leaping from one side of the gorge and managed to cross over the raging river below, whereas the tiger did not attempt to replicate this feat, and abandoned the chase. The point where the goat leapt has widened since then from erosion caused by the river Cauvery.
There is also some mythological significance to this place (both Sangama and Mekedatu). As per one version, the goat (meke) that is believed to have leapt across the Kaveri was Lord Shiva in disguise. On both rocky precipices of the gorge, one can find strange holes, whose shapes resemble goats' hooves, though several times larger. It was thought that only divine goats could have marked their 'footprints' in such hard rocks. At Mekedaatu, the Kaveri runs through a deep, narrow ravine of hard granite rock. The river, which is more than 150 meters wide at the confluence (at Sangama) flows through the hardly 10-meter-wide gorge at Mekedatu. One can see the ferocious flow of all that water, displaying Bernoulli's theorem. It is said that a goat could leap over it, giving the falls the name Goat's Leap. Upstream on the Kaveri is the well known Shivanasamudra Falls with its hydro-electric power station, which was set up already in 1902.
The water flows very fast through the gorge, gouging pits in the rocky riverbed. The climb down is steep and the rocks slippery, making it very dangerous to swim in the river. Drownings continue to occur here, although people have been warned about the danger by a small board and writing on rocks. Out of tourists visit this place, high number of people drown in the river, either when swimming or slipping off the cliff. The rock surface near cliff, both during season or during dry season, is very slippery and deceiving. Usually young people and students, who venture near cliff drown here.

The Massive Chunchi falls | Solo ride | Enroute to Sangama-Mekedatu | Kanakapura
Was on a solo ride enjoying the solitude of sceneries being offered by the surroundings on the way, then there I saw a sign board to chunchi falls just 15km before Sangama. And took a diversion and found and enjoy a massive and one of the amazing waterfalls of my life...
Chunchi falls is about 85km from Bangalore and 34Km from Kanakapura and 15km from Sangama. A suggested place to go during monsoons...
