Mekong Elephant Park LAOS
Halfway between Luang Prabang and Huay Xai/Chiang Khong, the main border crossing into northern Laos, the Mekong Elephant Park sits on the banks of the Mekong, opposite the village of Pakbeng. Open since 2008 and rebranded in 2017, the Park offers visitors the chance to discover the privileged role elephants play in Lao culture while also taking in the spectacular natural surroundings.

ELEPHANT SANCTUARY EXPERIENCE - DON'T RIDE ELEPHANTS (MUST SEE!!!) - Vlog #70
Elephant tourism is one of the most popular attractions in all of Asia. This is a story of an incredible experience at Mekong Elephant Park, out in a rural village of Laos called Pakbeng. I've partnered with an Elephant Sanctuary to bring you guys the good side of elephant tourism. The common traveler may not know what is going on behind hidden doors, so please checkout out Christian LeBlanc's Black Tusk to get more in depth on the bad side of elephant tourism which they don't want you to know about.
This was an incredible opportunity for me, and I would highly recommend to check out and support an elephant sanctuary to get a full experience around these beautiful animals. Do Not Ride Them, and please stay until the end to see the interview with Wendy! :)
Cheers! #SeeLauTravel

Sayabouly: the Land of Elephants
Sayabouly Province is the largest habitat of elephants in Laos. Farmers are still in use elephants as labor force in the fields and forests, though they treat the big mammal as a family member or a life-long partner.
The Lao Elephant Festival celebrates every February in Sayabouly with a reverence toward the sacred animal. You can feel the eternal adoration for elephants in the province, the Land of Elephants.
Elephant riding and trekking are available all year in Hongsa district. Nam Tien NPA (National Protected Area) of an elephant sanctuary is located near the provincial capital.
An Elephant Conservation Sanctuary in Pakbeng
Designed as a pilot project for the ecotourism industry, the Mekong Elephant Park demonstrates the founders’ aim of promoting sustainable tourism and supporting a threatened species as urbanization and the abuses they are confronted with threatens its survival. This project combines:
An environmental purpose: preserving a threatened species.
An economic and social ambition: suggesting alternatives for the mahouts and their families;
A touristic aim conceived and planned in order to respect the two aspects above.

Rescue Mae Boun Ma
We have a newcomer at the Mekong Elephant Park, Mae Bounma!
She sadly spent the last couple of years displayed on the side of the road while, inactive and untaken care of, whilst her owners were trying to sell her.
Nobody wished to buy Mae Bounma because of her slight physical disabilities. Indeed, unfortunately when she was younger, her mother trod on her tail and trunk which caused a lot of permanent damage. Because of the latter injury, she is unable to trumpet like the other elephants and needs extra time to drink.
We at the Mekong Elephant Park, through our preservation project, do not make notice of physical appearances. We only want our elephants to be happy, well treated in a safe environment.
Mae Bounma is now strolling around, running, eating and bathing with our other elephants freely. Something she hasn't been accustomed to for a very long time.
We have agreed so far with the owners to pay a monthly fee to keep her with us until we can manage to have the funds to keep her with us for good.
Today's price of an elephant is around 35000 USD but because of her physical differences, we were able to agree on a price of 17 000 USD that we now need to collect.
If you wish to take part in Mae Bounma's long term rescue and make sure she remains with us in a friendly environment, we/she would be more than grateful.
How can you support? By visiting us at the park in Pakbeng, by making a donation or simply by sharing this link and the story of Mae Bounma on social media.
Every little helps and we can't thank you enough in advance.
