Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Tour (4K)
The Mendenhall Glacier Visitors Center was very educational, enabling us to learn about the glaciers & how they form. There are nice views from within of the Mendenhall Glacier itself, as well as the Nugget Falls waterfall- the nice thing being you are insulated from the weather outside.
Many of the exhibits in the museum were interactive, so kids will especially enjoy being able to touch and feel, including actual 200 year old chunks of Mendenhall Glacier ice!
We also have a video of our hike to Photo Point & Nugget Falls- you can see that video here:

Alaskan Black Bear - Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, Juneau. My first up-close encounter !!
This is the first of many incredible encounters with Alaskan black bears during my five months working as a ranger with the US Forest Service. This big guy was just searching for vegetation to eat after his winter hibernation.

Mendenhall Glacier Tour & Hiking - Beautiful Nuggets Falls Waterfall & Photo Point Trail (4K)
The highlight of Juneau Alaska was the amazing Mendenhall Glacier & hiking trails. We took the short trek to the Photo Point trail, and then it was a 25 minute or so hike to the incredible Nuggets Falls waterfall. The ambiance of being next to a powerful waterfall was pretty exhilarating, and yet zen as well when we were a bit farther way. The sound of the waterfall became a tranquil presence. We also enjoyed views of the calm, icy glacial waters of Mendenhall Lake.
The Nugget Falls trails was pretty interesting itself and made us feel a bit like explorers. There was a warning about bears, but thankfully we didn't encounter one. We saw a plaque for Romeo the Friendly Black Wolf. I researched his story and it was pretty touching, so it was nice to see the wolf remembered in such a way.
We also made a video of the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor's center which you can see here:

Alaska Mendenhall Glacier Nugget Falls | Juneau
We have been two times to the Beautiful Mendenhall Glacier, in the year 2010 and 2012 , we took the City bus from downtown Juneau, and the City bus stops 1 1/4 miles from the visitor center.
Walking on Mendenhall Glacier
Via helicopter, we were taken to this majestic river of ice--right outside of Juneau, Alaska-- in order to experience it up-close, and to taste its fresh air and invigorating water. It will remain one of my favorite lifetime moments, when time stood still.
One is able to see this glacier, at Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, too:

Mendenhall Glacier Explorer
This tour visits Juneau's hallmark attraction, the Mendenhall Glacier. Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and the city's highlights as you make your way to Mendenhall Valley, home of the mighty Mendenhall. Upon arriving at the Mendenhall, your guide will point out many of the attractions that you'll want to see during your approximate 2 hour stay. Included are scenic Photo Point and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center where you'll want to take time to watch the short film about the Mendenhall and the 37 other glaciers that make up the Juneau Icefield. The area boasts several self-guided scenic trails that allow you to learn about the role the glacier had in carving the landscape. Meander through the Tongass National Forest as you explore the Moraine Ecology Trail and the Steep Creek Trail - the latter of which offers multiple views of wild sockeye salmon during the mid to late summer months. Each of these trails offers a different view of the Mendenhall through trees or along the shores of Mendenhall Lake. Due to occasional bear activity, food consumption is prohibited in the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. Note: This tour operates under a special use permit issued by the U.S. Forest Service. Wheelchair access may be limited - for details, please consult your Shore Excursion staff before booking.
Mendenhall Glacier Juneau Alaska 2016
Mendenhall Glacier, Juneau Alaska US 2016, visited during 14 nights Alaskan Cruise with ms Maasdam, Holland America Line.
Mendenhall Glacier is a glacier about 13.6 miles long located in Mendenhall Valley, about 12 miles (19 km) from downtown Juneau in the southeast area of the U.S. state of Alaska.[2] The glacier and surrounding landscape is protected as the 5,815-acre Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area, a federally designated unit of the Tongass National Forest.
It was originally known as Sitaantaago (the Glacier Behind the Town) or Aak'wtaaksit (the Glacier Behind the Little Lake), also latinized as Aakwtaaksit,[5] by the Tlingit. The glacier was named Auke (Auk) Glacier by naturalist John Muir for the Tlingit Auk Kwaan (or Aak'w Kwaan) band in 1888. In 1891 it was renamed in honor of Thomas Corwin Mendenhall. It extends from the Juneau Icefield, its source, to Mendenhall Lake and ultimately the Mendenhall River.

Juneau is the capital city of Alaska, located in the state's Southeastern region, with a population of about 30,000 and an area bigger than Rhode Island or Delaware. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of the then-Alaska Territory was moved from Sitka.
One of the interesting things about Juneau and Alaska is the effect on public life of being such a geographically large state. The state legislature, for instance, takes telephone testimony during its committee hearings.

Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, 326 5th St., ☎ +1-907-586-1023 (fax: +1-907-465-2976), Tiny ornate octagonal structure was originally built by the Tlingits in 1893. When the Russians were still in Sitka 50 years earlier, Father Ivan Veniaminov of the Russian Orthodox Church translated the Bible into Tlingit. Thus this building became southeast Alaska's oldest continuously operating church. $2 entrance donation.
Alaska State Capitol, 4th Street and Main Street, M-F 8:30AM-5PM: Sa-Su 9:30AM-4PM. Completed in 1931 as the territorial Capitol, this building does not have the typical imposing architecture of a State capitol. Today this Capitol building, remodeled in 2006, houses the State Legislature, the Governor, and the Lieutenant Governor. Extensive exhibit of historic photographs in the hallways. Complimentary 30-minute tours are available from mid-May through mid-September. Free.
Mendenhall Glacier This is a massive 1.5 mile wide glacier calving into its own lake, located about 13 miles north of downtown Juneau. To get there, you may take a bus or taxi from where the ships dock to the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. You can pay the driver in cash or buy two tickets at one of the many kiosks on the dock. A taxi ride is about the same cost as a bus if you have 5 or more passengers.
Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, 8510 Mendenhall Loop Road, ☎ (907)-789-0097 (fax: (907)-789-6643), May-Sept: 8am-7:30pm daily; Oct-April: 10am-4pm Thurs-Sun. Although you can't get right up to the glacier, you can get a great view of it from the visitors center, which is operated by the US Forest Service and is very informative. Photo Point Trail and the salmon, bear and Steep Creek Trail are easy and accessible trails. In August and September, black bears, often with cubs, visit Steep Creek to feed on spawning sockeye (red) salmon. Some trails may be closed then. A series of viewing platforms let the bears walk underneath the many folks watching them fish. No food or soft drinks are allowed in the recreation area, and dogs must be on leash. If you want a moderate hike through some beautiful forest, try the East Glacier trail which loops around east of the visitors' center. Follow the trail clockwise to avoid having to climb many steps -- you'll come down those steps at the end of your hike and to keep the best views of the glacier ahead of you, instead of over your shoulder. $3 fee for visitors center from May to September. Activities outside the center building itself are free of charge, and visitors may use the restrooms and visit the bookstore without paying the fee.
Mendenhall Glacier West Glacier Trail - For the more adventurous, the West Glacier trail which leads directly to the glacier (you can walk on it, but be careful to stay away from crevasses!) and also to a look out. Get off the bus just past the Mendenhall Glacier Campground stop. The stop is called Montana Creek. Walk up the road to the car park at the end (around 2km) and you will see the trail-head. Stick to the path, maybe dropping down to the lake side to checkout the icebergs and grab some photos. Continue along the path, across several bridges and up some switchbacks with fixed cables. Soon you will come to fork in the path, the left is steep and heads to the lookout, the right goes downhill into some dense vegetation. Shortly into the right-hand trail you will come across a shelter slightly off the track. Continue for several miles along the track, taking care on the slippery rock areas.
Alaskan Brewing Company Brewery Tour, If you head down to the Alaskan Brewing Company headquarters they will give you a tour/talk and free tasting of some great beer. A good way to end a day of hiking. To get there, jump on the bus and ask the driver which stop to get off at. Walk across the road and turn at the second right.
