Mendocino Woodlands Documentary
The Mendocino Woodlands Camp Association (MWCA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that has operated and maintained the facilities at the Mendocino Woodlands State Park since 1949. The Park is a National Historic Landmark built in the 1930s and is nestled in 700 acres of redwood trees, ferns, and glades along both sides of the Little North Fork of the Big River in Northern California, near the coastal village of Mendocino.
The developed area of the Park is for group camping only and consists of three large, private, rustic campgrounds—each with cabins and a dining/recreation hall—for camps from 30 to 250 people. Twenty-five miles of hiking trails in and around the Park, an open meadow, large beaver pond, river otters, deer, fox and other flora and fauna complete the magic of the Woodlands.
Even though the Woodlands is set up for large groups, individuals and small groups can also enjoy the camp in several ways. Check out our Uncommon Vacations page which tells you about how you can join existing groups for music, dance, and/or cultural sharing. Or, you can volunteer to help on-site in Spring and Fall (go to Friends of the Woodlands page).
Environmental education is an essential and special component offered by MWCA. In several different programs, qualified professional staff members guide campers and students in exploring and learning about wildlife and plant communities to better understand and respect our natural world.
Many campers have been coming for generations. The peaceful setting at the Woodlands provides a unique environment for retreats, training seminars, dance, music, church, youth, nature study groups and special celebrations, particularly weddings. Your group will be a welcome addition.

Marianne Baxter Sea Ranch, CA, Studio Discovery Tour Interview by Out & About Mendocino
Marianne Baxter is a jewelry artist and director of the Studio Discovery Tour on the Mendocino County coast. She is shown here in an interview during the 2012 Fall Discovery Tour.
People enjoyed fabulous sunshine and some of the most beautiful scenery that the northern California coast has to offer while visiting the personal studios of many of the area's most unique and talented artists.
The 2012 Studio Discovery Tour took place on Labor Day weekend (September 1-3) and the weekend before (August 25-26).
Twice a year, this ffree, self-guided tour along a 25-mile stretch of Highway 1, from Sea Ranch to Pt. Arena, is the perfect way to spend a leisurely day or an entire weekend. The participating artists you meet along the way are happy to demonstrate the making of their art and share their unique vision.
A free, full-color catalog will help you make the most of your tour. It contains a description of each artist, along with a detailed map and directions to each studio. While on the road, look for the bright yellow signs to help guide you along the way. Note that the catalog is a must when visiting artists in The Sea Ranch, since directional signs are not allowed along that section of Highway 1.
You can begin your adventure by stopping at the Discovery Gallery, 39140 So. Hwy 1, Gualala, CA, located in the Seacliff Center, above Trink's Cafe, on the west side of Hwy 1 (elevator accessible), to preview the work of Studio Tour artists and to pick up catalogs with maps. Catalogs will also be available at the Gualala Arts Center, the Mendocino Art Center, Elk Artists Collective and various local galleries and businesses along the way.

Mendocino, California
Mendocino (formerly, Big River, Meiggstown, and Mendocino City) is an unincorporated community in Mendocino County, California, United States. Mendocino is located 9.5 miles (15 km) south of Fort Bragg, at an elevation of 154 feet (47 m). The population of the census-designated place (CDP) was 894 at the 2010 census, up from 824 at the 2000 census. The town's name comes from Cape Mendocino, named by early Spanish navigators in honor of Antonio de Mendoza, Viceroy of New Spain.
Despite its small size, the town's scenic location on a headland surrounded by the Pacific Ocean has made it extremely popular as an artist colony and with vacationers.

Five Minutes Underwater in Mendocino, California
Just a compilation of some video from a Saturday dive in Mendocino. We went out through the Tunnel and this video starts after leaving the tunnel into open water and back around the outside. The interesting thing is the crazy number of purple urchins. The mass Sea Star die off in late 2013 resulted in the rampant increase of the urchins. The result of that is that in 2015/6 the urchins have taken their toll on the kelp. The Abalone have moved into shallower water to get to the kelp but the warmer water and El Nino have reduced the amount of kelp available overall. An amazing illustration of ecological systems. The Sea Stars are on the rebound and there are some large ones and large groups in the video. That's a Painted Greenling at 2:35 and a juvenile Rockfish (Canary?) at 4:35. If you want to read about the urchin barren problem that you see in this video, go here:
The Natural Beauty of the Mendocino Headlands
The Mendocino Headlands surround the Village of Mendocino in Northern California. The headlands are a series of majestic, high rocky cliffs with sheer drops overlooking the Pacific at the mouth of Big River. Nine and a half miles south of Ft. Bragg and two miles north of the town of Little River in Mendocino County, Mendocino Headlands State Park has miles of trails through grasses and wild flowers and with views of crashing waves and rugged sea arches. Grey whales can be seen on their winter migration.
The Village of Mendocino was named after Cape Mendocino to the north in Humbolt County, which was named in honor of Antonio de Mendoza, who served from 1535 to 1550 as the Viceroy of New Spain. Before 1850, there was a Pomo village on the north bank of the Big River. It became a logging town in the 1850s, with the first post office opening in 1858. Among the first settlers in the town were New Englanders, Portuguese fishermen, and immigrants from Canton Province in China.
In the 1950s Mendocino began to be known as an art colony and since 1987 has hosted the Mendocino Music Festival in the summer.
The Historic Ford House is both a museum and the visitors center for the Mendocino Headlands State Park. Visitors can see exhibits on the logging of redwood trees and their shipping on doghole schooners. A collection of historic and natural history videos is available for viewing. Walks along the headlands and through the fields of wild flowers are led by docents. The house was built in 1854 by Jerome B. Ford, who is known as the founder of the city.

A Day of Beachcombing, Cape Mendocino, California
These are clips of some of the things we found while beachcombing at Cape Mendocino in Humboldt County, California on July 24, 2010.
We go to Cape Mendocino every couple of months to see what we can find. The Cape seems to attract a lot of life (and death), and it is the most extreme beachcombing beach around here. There are always a lot of dead fish, sea lions, birds, and other animals. Normally it's either very foggy or very windy there, but today was a little bit windy and a little bit foggy.
The fish head I call a small lingcod is a cabezon, silly me. The little pile of shells with the shorecrab carapace on the limpet shell is a selection of what was in reach while sitting there. And there were a lot of other things we didn't show... This was shot with a Nikon D90 with the 70-300mm VR kit lens.
