14,000 Firefighters Battling California Blazes
(8 Aug 2018) Wildfires tearing through trees and brush, rampaging up hillsides and incinerating neighborhoods: The places and names change, but the devastation is showing signs of becoming the new normal in California.
Twin fires in Northern California being treated as one are the largest wildfire in state history and by Tuesday had scorched 455 square miles (1,178 square kilometers) -- nearly the size of the city of Los Angeles.
The Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco was still growing this week as it broke the record set eight months ago. In December, the Thomas Fire killed two people, burned 440 square miles and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings in Southern California.
The Mendocino Complex, which is 34 percent contained, has been less destructive to property than some of the other wildfires in the state because it is mostly raging in remote areas. But officials say it threatens 11,300 buildings and some new evacuations were ordered over the weekend as the flames spread.
Hotter weather attributed to climate change is drying out vegetation, creating more intense fires that spread quickly from rural areas to city subdivisions, climate and fire experts say. But they also blame cities and towns that are expanding housing into previously undeveloped areas.
More than 14,000 firefighters are battling more than a dozen major blazes throughout California, state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean said.
I can remember a couple of years ago when we saw 10 to 12,000 firefighters in the states of California, Oregon and Washington and never the 14,000 we see now, he said.
Crews made progress over the weekend against one of the two blazes in the Mendocino Complex with help from water-dropping aircraft, Cal Fire operations chief Charlie Blankenheim said in a video on Facebook.
But the other one is growing after spreading into the Mendocino National Forest and then spreading south to Colusa County.
The Lakeport Unified School District was scheduled to begin Wednesday but superintendent secretary Tami Carley said classrooms need to be cleared of smoke before students can return. She said the school year for the Lake County district will be delayed at least two weeks.
The Mendocino Complex and other fires in Northern California have created such a haze of smoke in the Central Valley that Sacramento County health officials advised residents to avoid outdoor activities for the entire week.

1 (of 2) Stella Cadente's Founders
Stella Cadente Olive Oil was founded by the husband & wife team of Sue Ellery and Tom Hunter in 1999. Their olives are grown without pesticides or herbicides & hand-picked at the couple's Shooting Star Ranch in the lovely Anderson Valley of Mendocino County, California.
In each of the last 7 years the couple's olive oils have won some of the world's most prestigious oil awards, including two Best of Show awards in international competition and numerous Gold, Silver & Bronze Medals. The 2007 L'Autunno Blend Extra Virgin oil received a Gold Medal at the 8th Annual Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition, formerly known as Oils of the World. The 2007 Persian Lime oil captured a Silver the second year in a row. In 2006, they were honored with a Best of Show award in an international competition for the packaging and design for the entire line of oils.
American Feast's Doug Ferber caught up with Sue & Tom in San Francisco at a gourmet food show they were attending and got a terrific 2-part interview.
