Short documentary about famous squat in Ljubljana which is also an informal cultural centre of the city.
Metelkova Ljubljana Slovenia
Metelkova (full name in Slovene: Avtonomni kulturni center Metelkova mesto, Metelkova City Autonomous Cultural Center, referred to by the acronym AKC) is an autonomous social and cultural centre in the city centre of Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital city. Formerly, the site was a military headquarter of the Army of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, then it became the Slovenian headquarter of the Yugoslav National Army. It consists of seven buildings (military barracks) extended over a total area of 12,500 , which have been squatted since September 1993. The squat is named after nearby Metelko Street (Slovene: Metelkova ulica), which is named after the 19th-century Slovenian Roman Catholic priest, philologist, and unsuccessful language reformer Fran Metelko.

Metelkova social centre in Ljubljana. Amazing art display and attitude.
Metelkova – See the other side of Ljubljana
Metelkova might not have much to do with the history and culture of Ljubljana, however, it is well known for its alternative art scene. Sprawling over 12,500 m2, it was squatted (yes, no joke) since September 1993 and became an autonomous social center; with its former life was the Yugoslav National Army Headquarter.

During the day, not much else goes on in this region. At night, it is transformed into a hub where art galleries, live music, and parties go on. Not exactly a party type, I opted, instead, to visit during day times with my friends to admire the art work. And we were not disappointed with the inventive, alternative, unique and quirky place that is essentially an open art gallery.
thanks for watching

Magical History Tour - Ljubljana, Slovenia
Join me on a stroll around some of the historic sites of Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana.
Ljubljana is a great night out - Slovenia's Capital City
We arrived in Ljubljana late in the afternoon on a Thursday and it was getting dark so we didn't have much time to explore. We quickly grabbed a pizza and then walked into the city centre after checking in our anything-but-luxury AirBNB. If you're wondering why I chose this AirBNB. It was actually listed as an 'entire house', but when we arrived, it wasn't, it was a rundown hostel in some guy called Milovan's house. We were pretty annoyed by this as it got the trip of to a bit of a negative start.
You'll spot later on in the video that we talk about Milovan's kitchen. He kept telling us the kitchen was open 24/7, which seemed very odd. We also couldn't find the kitchen. We opened all of the doors, went into the buildings outside, went upstairs, but there was no kitchen to be found. Milovan's kitchen doesn't exist.
Drunk cam appears at the end again - ignore us, we're drunk and stupid. Finland doesn't exist. Milovan's kitchen doesn't exist. But Ljubljana definitely exists and it's a great city.
Jokes aside, Ljubljana is a great night out. Everybody in Slovenia seems to be very friendly, and I'll definitely be returning without getting too drunk.
We found out that Captain's Cabin was voted as the best bar in Ljubljana, so we headed over and had a great time there. It's not as cheap as you may expect, but it's still cheaper than in the UK.
Oh yeah, not sure how to pronounce Ljubljana properly, so we decided to call it Lallana, or anything that kinda rhymed with Ljubljana.

Hostel in Metelkova - Beautiful Slovenia 2017 (Part 3)
The best hostel in Slovenia!
SORRY FOR THE TYPO AT THE BEGINNING! Kinda realized after uploading it ;D
Anyway, On this episode we show you around the Hostel Celica! This was the best hostel I have ever stayed in. The rooms were amazing and quiet, the price in unbeatable, and it is literally next to the best and biggest youth gathering and party place of the city (if not the country) The graffiti and street art were incredible to say the least and nightlife couldn't be better.
This is the third part in the Slovenia trip series. Keeping the videos short and happy.
Next week part 4 where we explore the capital city! Subscribe to stay tuned about this series!
I apologize in advance if I misspell the name of the places we went, if you do notice some spelling mistake let me know!
Keep smiling :)
Day 6 Slovenia: Last day, visit to Metelkova!
Last day of the Slovenia leg of this trip!
We visit Metelkova, an abandoned area that has been occupied by artists and students. Super different from the rest of Ljubljana as Metelkova seems to be more honest, raw and gritty. We didn't do this place enough justice with the video we made, so don't make hasty generalizations after watching. All we can say is that it's a must visit when you go to Slovenia!
Metelkova, Urban squat. Ljubljana. Eslovenia
Metelkova, Urban squat. Ljubljana, Eslovenia Just across the river from the sleepy old-town of central Ljubljana – a delicate maze of cobbled streets, medieval fortifications and colourful churches that characterise the many cities once occupied by the former Austro-Hungarian Empire – lie the dozen or so dilapidated buildings that make up what has become known as Slovenia’s second capital. On first glance, it is hard to believe it’s actually occupied. There are no signs directing visitors to its gates: the rubbish-strewn streets are eerily empty in the daylight, the graffiti covering the walls unread. But after dark, it becomes the focal point of the country’s alternative culture scene.
Metelkova, Urban squat. Ljubljana – one the largest, and arguably most successful, urban squats in Europe. Sprawled across 12,500 sq m of an abandoned army base, the self-proclaimed city has become the leading centre of underground music and art in the region

10 Things to do in Ljubljana, Slovenia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Prešeren Square is a central meeting spot in the heart of the Old Town, so it made sense to start our tour of Ljubljana here. You’ll find the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, lots of gelato shops, and the baffling bridge we just mentioned.
As for the reasoning behind the Triple Bridge and the famed dragon bridge, which is guarded by four dragons.
Ljubljana’s Central Market is another spot worth checking out.
We needed to sample some Slovenian food so we went to Allegria.
Sam ordered Zlikrofi (zhlee-krofi), a Slovenian dumpling stuffed with potato + lamb goulash along with Slovenian sausage with cabbage & potatoes.
Ljubljana Castle, which sits on Castle Hill overlooking the city. Built as a medieval fortress in the 11th century, Ljubljana Castle has seen many redesigns and renovations. Climb the Outlook Tower for 360 degree views of the city.
There are departures for cruises down the Ljubljanica. We boarded a cruise directly underneath the Love Lock Bridge, which is actually called Mesarski Most. It was our favourite activity in Ljubljana and it was a super relaxed way to watch the city.
Metelkova is home to the best street art.
One place we really enjoyed was Sarajevo 84, a restaurant specializing in Balkan cuisine. The portions massive & everything we ordered was delicious.
We had a feast featuring: grilled meat with pita and onions, baked beans and sausage, roasted peppers, and a flaky pastry stuffed with cheese. It only came to 23 Euros.
Speaking of galleries and museums, a few you’ll find include: the National Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Slovenia.
We finished off at Tivoli, which is the largest park in Ljubljana.
And that’s it for our time in Ljubljana. Our visit was short, tasty, and relaxing, and we’re really glad we made some time to visit this underrated capital.
Now you guys know the drill; if there are any other things to do in Ljubljana that we may have missed in this travel guide, feel free to share your suggestions with fellow travellers below.

The crumbling military buildings have been painted and decorated with various pieces of street art and sculptures. Some of the buildings have been turned into bars supporting an underground music scene.
