WATCH FROM THE BEGINNING |
We live in a 33 foot fifth wheel tiny home camper that we are currently traveling the USA in! It is an alternative lifestyle we find that it brings us the most freedom. Living in a RV full time was never something we planned to do. Instead we jumped right into it. In a matter of 30 days. We bought a RV and the following day bought a truck to tow with!

Google street view timelapse. Portage Glacier Highway (Alaska, USA)
The Portage Glacier Highway, or Portage Glacier Road, is a highway located in the U.S. state of Alaska. The highway is made up of a series of roads, bridges, and tunnels that connect the Portage Glacier area of the Chugach National Forest and the city of Whittier to other major highways, mainly the Seward Highway. Most of the highway travels through mainly rural areas just north of the Kenai Peninsula, with the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel passing under Maynard Mountain, part of the Chugach Mountain Range. Parts of the route were first constructed in the early 1900s, and the entire highway was completed on June 7, 2000, as part of the Whittier Access Project. As of 2012, the highway has not been extended or rerouted. The main portion of the highway traveling from the western terminus to the Begich, Boggs visitors center is designated as National Forest Highway 35 by the U.S. Forest Service.
Alaska Tour - Dease Lake, BC - Stop #3
Today we traveled all day to reach Dease Lake, British Columbia on our way towards northern Alaska.
This area is so remote that they don't even have power yet! Along the way we saw all new power poles and wires being strung by helicopter!
The road was rather quite steep with multiple large hills, and several switchbacks but we made it without any problems!
After the tough day on the road, we got together with our new tour friends and Gene Ponder played his guitar and we sang along!

Google street view timelapse. Stewart-Cassiar Highway (British Columbia,Canada)
Highway 37, known as the Stewart-Cassiar Highway, Terrace-Kitimat Highway from Kitimat to Terrace, and also as the Dease Lake Highway and Stikine Highway, is the northwesternmost highway in the province, and it is very scenic, passing through some of the most isolated areas of B.C. The highway first gained its '37' designation in 1975, and at that time, its southern terminus was at the community of New Hazelton on the BC Highway 16 (the Yellowhead Highway). In 1979, with the completion of a new bridge, the highway's Yellowhead junction was relocated to a point on Highway 16 just south of the site of Kitwanga. Highway 37 was then extended south to Kitimat in 1986, using a stretch of road that was previously designated Highway 25. On our trip of August and September 2011, the entire highway is paved except for areas under repair from washouts. The highway is paved with sealcoat, a rough pavement that has good traction. Highway 37 starts its 874 km (543 mi) journey in the south at Kitimat. 59 km (37 mi) north, Highway 37 reaches Terrace, where it merges onto the Yellowhead Highway. The Yellowhead coincides with Highway 37 east for 91 km (57 mi) to Kitwanga Junction, where the Yellowhead diverges east.
North of the Yellowhead's Kitwanga junction, Highway 37 travels 76 km (47 mi) to Cranberry Junction, and then another 80 km (50 mi) north to Meziadin Junction, where Highway 37A begins and heads west via Bear River Pass to Stewart and Hyder, Alaska. Highway 37 travels north through the Skeena Mountains for 333 km (207 mi) to the Continental Divide community of Dease Lake, which straddles the Stikine and Dease River basins. Another 116 km (72 mi) north and Highway 37 reaches Jade City, where a junction to the former Asbestos-mining community of Cassiar is located. North of Jade City, Highway 37 travels another 120 km (75 mi) to its crossing of the 60th parallel into the Yukon Territory, becoming Yukon Highway 37 and terminating at a junction with the Alaska Highway near Upper Liard just 3.4 km (2.1 mi) later. The Highway 37 of today is the result of highway extension projects begun during the 1960s and climaxing in 1972.
Originally, a roadway extended south from the Alaska Highway to serve the Cassiar mining district, eventually reaching Dease Lake and joining a road to Telegraph Creek (sometimes referred to as Highway 51, but not signed as such). To the south, logging roads extended north almost as far as Meziadin Junction.
By 1968, the route of what is now 37A extended past Meziadin Junction north. By the middle of 1972, only a few miles remained to be built between Meziadin Junction and Iskut. Four bicyclists, whose journey from Alaska to Montana was chronicled in a May 1973 National Geographic article, braved the muddy gap.
Once this route was completed, travelers only had to contend with limited hours for using the logging roads south of Meziadin Junction, roads which were upgraded during the 1970s. The completion of a new bridge over the Skeena River gave Highway 37 a more direct connection to Highway 16.
Road trip to Dease Lake
May 17, 2019. First road trip of the year. We see the stuffed animals at the Tatogga lake resort and collect jade from a transfer site just south of Dease Lake. There we found a modified pick up truck with massive mining truck tires on it. Very cool.

Alaska Tour - Watson Lake, Yukon Terr. - Stop #4
Today we continued our Alaska Tour towards Watson Lake in the Yukon Territory of Canada!
During our drive, we stopped at the Cassiar Mountain Jade Store where 90% of the world wide Jade is mined! This place was quite large, and busy. It just so happened that the Discovery Channel was there filming for an upcoming special on Jade to be aired sometime next year, and we were all asked to sign waivers just in case we were viewed during the show!!
We then continued our drive to Watson Lake and arrived just in time to put up the retired NH 'JEANNIE' license plate in the Sign Post Forest! I helped Jeannie put it up on a post at the top, near the front for all passersbys to see!

Cassiar, BC @ Summer 1973
In the summer of 1973, I worked at an asbestos mine in the remote mining town of Cassiar, located in north western British Columbia. Among those of us who were not Lifers, we often yelled-out that summer what became our summer theme song (Band On The Run): If I ever get out of here, thought of giving it all away to a registered charity. All I need is a pint a day, if I ever get out of here! As you'll also see, to try to get as far away from the asbestos dust that was everywhere (even settling onto the desk in my room) we would hike the local mountains. And, of course, a few pints were consumed! Now - some 40 years later - I am fortunately not apparently suffering from any asbestos related diseases. Let us hope that it stays that way!
Requiem for Cassiar
Shot and Edited in 1992. Cassiar's last day came on Hallowe'en. My most vivid memory is the end credits shot of John Slana taking down his own equipment on Carmacks Street. The shot vividly portrays the cold reality of no more money and yet it was more than money which blossomed a whole community in the wilderness of Canada's North. They just don't make towns like that anymore and that is a sad state of affairs in what once made our country great...building a mix of international citizens in a small northern town. Cassiar was my first exposure to there being a much larger world and helped me seek out larger opportunities and experiences.
