Hiking The Milford Track, Fiordland National Park, New Zealand
We flew from Gold Coast to Queenstown at the End of March 2018. After a few days in Queenstown, we caught the Tracknet bus to Te Anau before boarding the Real Journies boat to cross Lake Te Anau for the start of the Milford Track.
Four fantastic days of hiking took us through glacier carved valleys, along the Clinton and Arthur river torrents and many waterfalls in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park to the finish at Sandfly Point. From here a 5 minute small boat transfer takes you to Milford Sound.
The highlight of the hike would have to be the crossing of Mackinnon Pass on day 3. This alpine pass was named after explorer and Milford Track pioneer, Quinton Mackinnon who tragically drowned in Lake Te Anau in 1892 on while returning from the his track. We passed a memorial to him on Lake Te Anau and also on Mackinnon Pass. The last day of the hike takes you past a number of famous waterfalls including McKay Falls and Giants Gate Falls.

Fiordland National Park (Milford Track) New Zealand
Bardsley family finds new adventure in backcountry of Fiordland National Park. Tramping (backpacking) the famous Milford Track on the south island of New Zealand features Glacier carved mountains, eels and giant trout, crystal clear rivers and the tallest waterfall in New Zealand. Intense last day with 10 inches of rain to close off trail, family has to forge rushing currents of flooded track. Double Waterfall! ....woah!
Our kids were 10 and 14 at the time. We were doing 10-14 mile days. My children are tough Montana kids that were in good shape physically and mentally for a back-country backpack.
As for being dangerous, I would say if the weather is nice, then you dont have to worry about being helicoptered out (we almost were) because of flooding. However, there are avalanche zones that your traversing. Caution is key in the back-country. The most common was of dying or getting hurt is Falling.
If you want to do this trip - you must get advanced reservations! It is 4 days at least of hiking. Check out this website for more info;
My hike through the Milford Track Fiordland National Park New Zealand 2013
This was such a great multi-day hike passing through valleys, mountains, and temperate rainforest in the South Island Fiordland National Park of New Zealand. Milford track is a 4 day hike, about 33 miles long. I lost video footage at the top of McKinnon pass and the better part of Day 4. My iPhone 5 died on me and I couldn't salvage the video files. It's a bit disappointing that I dont have any record of those days. But nevertheless this 4 day hike was definitely the highlight for me. On day 4, it was raining really hard, the rain opened up so many waterfalls. It was a sight to behold. music by halcyonicfalconx

New Zealand: Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park
Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Māori) is a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination.
Milford Sound is named after Milford Haven in Wales, while the Cleddau River which flows into the sound is also named for its Welsh namesake. The Māori named the sound Piopiotahi after the thrush-like piopio bird, now extinct. Piopiotahi means a single piopio, harking back to the legend of Māui trying to win immortality for mankind - when Maui died in the attempt, a piopio was said to have flown here in mourning.
Milford Sound runs 15 kilometers inland from the Tasman Sea at Dale Point - the mouth of the fiord - and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 meters (3,900 ft) or more on either side. Among the peaks are The Elephant at 1,517 meters (4,977 ft), said to resemble an elephant's head, and The Lion, 1,302 meters (4,272 ft), in the shape of a crouching lion. Lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs, while seals, penguins, and dolphins frequent the waters and whales can be seen sometimes.
Milford Sound sports two permanent waterfalls all year round, Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls. After heavy rain however, many hundreds of temporary waterfalls can be seen running down the steep sided rock faces that line the fiord. They are fed by rain water drenched moss and will last a few days at most once the rain stops.
With a mean annual rainfall of 6,813 mm on 182 days a year, a high level even for the West Coast, Milford Sound is known as the wettest inhabited place in New Zealand and one of the wettest in the world. Rainfall can reach 250 mm during a span of 24 hours. The rainfall creates dozens of temporary waterfalls (as well as a number of major, more permanent ones) cascading down the cliff faces, some reaching a thousand meters in length. Smaller falls from such heights may never reach the bottom of the sound, drifting away in the wind.
Accumulated rainwater can at times cause portions of the rain forest to lose their grip on the sheer cliff faces, resulting in tree avalanches into the sound. The regrowth of the rain forest after these avalanches can be seen in several locations along the sound.

What the Milford Track is really like (NZ Hiking)
A no bullshit video about what the Milford Track in New Zealand was like in April 2018, staying in the DOC huts.
The world-renowned Milford Track is an easy enough 4 day walk along valleys carved by glaciers, taking you though through ancient rain-forests and past many cascading waterfalls. You will get wet, cold, tired and wet again, but it's totally worth it; even you don't have great views from the Mackinnon Pass!

Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Māori) is a fjord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island, within Fiordland National Park. We were there on a rainy day. The road to and the fjord itselfwere very beautiful.

When it rains, many hundreds of temporary waterfalls can be seen running down the steep sided rock faces that line the fiord and you will see them in this presentation.
The road to the fjord with the Homer tunnel is also spectacular.
