THE CIA'S SECRET TOY OPERATION IN SOUTH ASIA
Guangdong, China, 2005. It was late at night.
A factory manager made his way past the assembly line to the adjoining warehouse, where a meeting was set to take place - a group of men had already gathered. He didn’t know exactly who these men were, but from his contact, he knew they were important people.
Not wasting any time he presented to them what they asked for, a toy; a toy that he and his colleagues had passionately been working on the past few months. Upon inspection, the men seemed pleased with the product; but in order to move to the next phase of operation, final approval was needed from Langley.
You see, these men were from the CIA; and this operation, if successful, could help put an end to one of the greatest conflicts in modern time.
But how? What was this toy? And who were they targeting?
This happened in 2005, but what lead to this moment, actually started four years earlier.

Technique for landing a helicopter on ship - Shipboard Operation
The procedure for landing a helicopter at sea is complex, because of both safety reasons and the need for abort and backup systems in case of component failures. Typical examples of failures are for a drone to lose the GPS signal or the development of communication problems between ground and helicopter. If we do not include abort points in the procedure, a landing may look like this: after the mission is complete, the helicopter flies to landing standby point, say 200–300 meters behind the ship. The ship is made ready for landing and ground personnel take position. The ship’s captain gives the go-ahead for landing. The helicopter flies to the touchdown standby point, approximately 10–20 meters behind and beside the ship. The flight officer gives the go-ahead for touchdown. A piloted helicopter will wait for a moment of low landing platform motion and attempt to touch down, most likely from beside the ship, while an unmanned drone helicopter will hover several meters above the touchdown point and wait for a prediction of low platform motion.

The high-profile case of the death in police custody of French teenager Adama Traoré in 2016 sparked wide-spread protests across the whole of the greater Paris region.
The young black man was planning to celebrate his 24th birthday that evening but he never made it home. He was dead only a couple of hours after his arrest. A second autopsy confirmed that Adama died from suffocation.
News of Traoré's death caused anger and despair in some under-privileged areas of the suburbs. Days of protests followed and some members of the local community clashed with police, setting cars and buildings alight.
Al Jazeera Arabic reporter Abdullah Elshamy went to Paris to ask what it means to be French. How does it feel when you can't get a job, when you are targeted because of your race and seven times more likely to be stopped and searched than your white, middle-class counterparts?
Elshamy visits several suburban communities to identify first-hand the social, cultural and economic problems facing the high-rise estates in banlieue towns like Argenteuil and Aulnay-sous-Bois.
Poverty here is indescribable, says Oulfa, who balances her charity work with full time employment. This association collects cheaply-priced goods to sell to the residents of the neighbourhood at lower prices. What you see in this grocery store is what's left in big shops. We collect all thrown, broken and even expired groceries to sell them here.
Like Oulfa, others are trying to bring about positive change to their local communities. A group of young men who've all served prison sentences are now martial arts instructors to local young people.
For boxing coach Toufik, being a positive role model and mentor for the next generation is important. Before the training we always have a 10 or 15 minutes conversation with them. We teach them about the life's values and respect of parents and the authorities.
But not far from the government-funded sports centre are those who represent the darker side of life in Aregenteuil.
We didn't choose to be gangsters. We'd like to work in offices with computers. But we can't because they won't accept us, says a drug dealer.
Behind the dealer's alienation lies a whole sub-culture, in which young people like him simply don't have the same educational and social opportunities as the white, middle-class. They feel marginalised from mainstream French society.
We don't feel French, says rapper Salem, who's been arrested several times. We are the sons of immigrants.
His friend Farid is currently unemployed and has had several job applications rejected, he believes, because of racial profiling.
They treat us as if we don't have the right to succeed in life. They want to stigmatise the suburbs as negative, dirty places. So we end up with no trust or communication, he says.
The alienation is felt mostly by second and third generation descendants of the immigrants from the former French colonies in Africa who came to boost the labour force in the 1970s.
In 2009, the France National Centre For Scientific Research published a report called The Police and Minorities. It found that police identity checks in Paris were based mainly on appearance and that, unsurprisingly, people looking black or Arab were searched far more often than those looking white.
Blacks, it said, were stopped and searched twice as often as whites but Arabs were seven times more likely to be stopped than white people.
I have never seen anyone saying he is racist or using racist words during an intervention, says Bernard Pasqualini, a former Paris police chief. I've seen washing machines falling from the roof of a building [on firefighters]. It doesn't matter if he's white, yellow or black. I think the reaction would be the same.
We're accused of stopping people from overseas origin. The problem is that they're the majority of these neighbourhoods population, adds Pasqualini.
Unrest in the suburbs has enabled right-wing parties like the National Front and its outspoken leader Marine Le Pen, to accuse these areas as being hotbeds of extremism at the forefront of what they call the ‘Islamisation of France’.
The Paris suburbs face big economic and social problems. They face security threats on a daily basis. They suffer from delinquency, theft and drug trafficking, says Gaetan Dussausaye, the president of the Youth National Front (FNJ). That's why you have to impose law enforcement in the suburbs.

Events are taking place across Iran to mark 40 years since the 1979 revolution, which sent Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi into exile and ended more than 2500 of Persian monarchy. The commemorations will culminate with Victory Day on February 11 - exactly four decades after revolutionaries loyal to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini won control of state television channels and the military abandoned its support for the Shah and declared itself neutral.
Iran's revolutionaries have remained in control of the country ever since. But while the theocracy has weathered continuous opposition from successive US administrations - including the ever-present spectre of US-led military action to topple the leadership - in recent years it has also faced waves of popular discontent at home. Conservative Iranians say the ideas of the revolution must be carried forward to guard against foreign interference, but others say successive Iranian governments have been as corrupt and discriminatory as during the time of the Shah. Sanctions recently re-imposed by the United States following its unilateral exit from a much-heralded deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions have led to a sharp rise in inflation and pushed many Iranians into hardship - leaving Iran’s moderate president Hassan Rouhani with precious little room to manoeuvre.
As Iranians mark 40 years since the revolution The Stream will look back at the seismic changes Khomeini brought to the country, consider whether the ideals of the revolution still hold, and ask what aspirations Iranians hold for the future.

Another Lynas-Like Project in the Making in Pengerang, Johor?

Pakatan Rakyat had a dialogue with the residents of Pengerang over the RM60.6 billion Refinery and Petroleum Integrated Development (RAPID) project in Pengerang, Johor.
The project involves 22,500 acres of land area to be acquired by the government.
That includes acquiring 18 burial sites (11 Muslim burial sites and 7 non Muslim), 11 surau, 6 mosques, 3 temples, 3 Chinese medium schools, 5 national schools and 5 Islamic religious schools besides the affected dwelling places of the residents.
The refinery is expected to operate by the end od 2016. It has the capacity to process 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day, to produce into petroleum products such as petrol, jet fuel and diesel.
National petroleum company, PETRONAS, a GLC, will be looking for strategic partners to participate in this bold venture.
According to Hassan Karim (PKR Deputy Chief), contracting companies like Dialog Group Bhd, Kencana Petroleum and KNM Group Bhd, who enjoyed strong ties with UMNO, will benefit significantly from the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the proposed RAPID project.
Datuk Chua Jui Meng, Johor PKR Chief, went to great length to emphasize on the environmental and health impact on local residents.
The mission tons of sulphur dioxide and other poisonous gas into the air daily will cause acid rain pollution on the sea and land.
Prolong inhalation of polluted air causes nose, colon cancer and leukemia, as evidenced by 26 refinery personnel suffering from one of cancerous diseases in a Singaporen refinery. These personnel had worked in the refinery plant for 15 years and 20 have since died of cancer.
