HAUNTED MISTLEY TOWERS
Recently I visited a famous landmark site called Mistley Towers at Mistley Thorn, Essex.
Standing by the banks of the River Stour estaury, Mistley Towers are the twin towers of the now demolished Church of St. Mary the Virgin at Mistley in Essex.
The original Georgian parish church on the site had been built in classical style early in the 18th century following the death of Richard Rigby Esquire. Later in that century there was a grandiose plan by his son, the wealthy politician Richard Rigby, to transform Mistley Thorn into a spa town. Rigby wished to see a church from the windows of his mansion and a suitably grand church was required for the affluent visitors expected to patronise the new spa. Thus in 1776, the great architect Robert Adam was commissioned to enhance the church. His design was in the neoclassical style, with a tower at both the east and the west ends of the church. These are now all that remain of the once magnificent structure.
My aim was to visit the tower`s interior by arrangement with a keyholder with a view to capturing any e.v.p or other paranormal event.
Although I was able to tap into a number of spiritual presences, the opportunity for capturing good e.v.p was somewhat diminished by the ever present road traffic - particularly large HGV`s travelling to and from the nearby port.
However, it was a worthwhile venture as you shall see in this video.
Please rate it if you view it!:)

Thus in 1776, the renowned architect Robert Adam was commissioned to enhance the church. His design was in the neoclassical style, with a tower at both the east and the west ends of the church. These are now all that remain of the once magnificent structure.
The square symmetrical towers are in the neoclassical style, resembling tall pavilions rather than towers, with each facade pedimented and the whole surmounted by a cupola decorated with blind windows interspersed by Ionic columns. At ground floor level two unfluted ionic columns at each corner support a decorative cornice. The columns are decorative only, and appear to serve no structural purpose. The design of the towers creates the impression that the building was once more of a miniature cathedral than a parish church.
The main body of the church however was small and occupied the (now empty) site between the two towers. It was a single story structure with a simple hipped roof and an entrance portico at its centre. This part of Adam's church was demolished in 1870, when the new parish church in New Road was built.
The remaining towers are Grade I listed and in the care of English Heritage.

Around Mistley & Manningtree - Essex
In north Essex is the delightful village and town of Mistley and Manningtree. These are bounded by the River Stour and the Tendring peninsular. Shakespeare wrote about and the Wichfinder General was based here in England's smallest and one of its oldest town.
TASTER FROM THE MISTLEY SHOOT
Here is the final opening scene for my piece on Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder General. Shot at Mistley Towers, Mistley, Essex.
This piece took 30 minutes to shoot due to the amount of traffic on the road outside. Another very difficult shoot. All the audio sound on this clip (separate to the drone music) had to be added with the original audio stripped out. The effect works well, I think.
The full para-documentary will be available soon :)

Dovercourt and Mistley Swans in Essex, England
Mistley in Essex, England is well known for its swans, and with a large swan population (flocks of up to 250 being recorded) a great tourist attraction. Dovercourt, also with a growing swan population (just 12 miles from Mistley) is more famous for Mistral, a swan who flew one windy day in 1999 was cared for by the Harwich Environmental Action Team (HEAT) and for the next ten years (unusually for a swan) had numerous mates, on several occasions two at the same time.
During that time we regularly visited relatives in Dovercourt every summer and always made a point of looking in on Mistral and her family; and for the rest of the year were kept up to date with her progress by a member of HEAT. So on our recent revisit to Essex the Dovercourt swans have a special place for us and we were delighted to see the present population (which has grown significantly since our last visit) is healthy and thriving.
At both Mistley and Dovercourt there are now signs by the roadside giving good sound advice of not feeding the swans near the road or on the grass but feeding them in the water; and at Mistley in particular, reminding people not to use mouldy bread for feeding.
