【narration】
The season for summer mountaineering has finally arrived.
Taneyama Heights and Yakeishi Mountains in Oshu are opened on June 1.
Today we are visiting the YAKEISHI-DAKE Hot Springs HIMEKAYU at the base of the YAKEISHI Mountains.
It is about a 30 minute drive to HIMEKAYU from the Mizusawa Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway, and 20 minutes from the YAKEISHI-DATE trailhead.
We’re here!
“Welcome!”
OK. Shall we start with a bath?
Let’s take a look at the open-air bath.
This space gives you a sense of freedom.
There are two fountainheads with different spring water qualities.
Both are smooth and feel as if they adhere to your skin.
Local people are quite familiar with this “BIHADA NO YU” (Waters of Beautiful Skin).
You might end up unintentionally staying in the bath for a long time gazing at the snow remaining on the Yakeishi Mountains.
And now it’s time to enjoy the evening meal.
The ingredients used are harvested locally.
This o-mochi (rice cakes) is called “JUNE-MOCHI.”
“JUNE” is from the local dialect for “wild sesame” grain. It is one of the local specialties.
There are various selections for those who do not stay the night as well.
The ingredients here are also made locally.
The rooms have beautiful views, where you can see the Yakeishi Mountains and Isawa Dam. It will give you a feeling of relaxation.

WebTV#32 Chasing the Dream Mizusawa Race Track
【explanation】
This is Mizusawa Race Track in Mizusawa-ku, Oshu-shi, Iwate.
This race track has a retro-like atmosphere suitable for a local race track. Some of the most skilled horses at a national level, such as “MEISEI OPERA,” “TOHO EMPEROR” and “TOKEI NISEI” have appeared here.
There is also an interview with IWATE KEIBA’s newest female jockey, Mayu Suzuki.
Check it out.
【narration】
It started with my father who loves horse racing. He took me to see the horse races and I saw a race with a horse named “Dream Journey” and a jockey named “Kenichi Ikezoe.”
I was really impressed when I saw him come from behind to pass other horses and reach the finish line. I became interested in becoming a jockey.
My father brought me to Mizusawa Race Track often, and when I saw some women doing the work, I realized I wanted to do it, too.
I’m not afraid of the speed at all. In fact, faster is better.
It feels good, but I don’t like it when they act wildly.
When they start acting wild, or start playing, I often fall off the horse, so that is a little difficult.
The best part is being able to ride different horses. They all have their own personality, and being able to manage them myself and bring out their best gives me a real sense of satisfaction.
It also feels great to pass the finish line with the horse.
I’ve fallen off quite often, but no real injuries.
My favorite horse is “HOYARA.”
HOYARA gave me my first and second wins.
I’ve also helped train it, and rode it a lot, so I like it.
They say that I’m weird, so the job suits me.
I want to show a strong performance, even among the male jockeys. I want to help the horses run as well as they can.
There used to be a “Lady’s Cup,” in which there were only female jockeys. They would race at various tracks and get points for the competition.
I would have liked to have joined that, but there aren’t so many female jockeys anymore, so they quit doing it. If it comes back, I would like to try that.
I’m going to keep doing my best to get better and better.
Please come out to “Mizusawa Race Track” and support Iwate KEIBA.
Thank you very much.

Oshu TABI ROMAN #27〜Taking a drive through Oshu in the Autumn Heading east〜
【explanation】
This season, let HATTO-KUN, the mascot for “OSHU HATTO” guide the younger generation on a tour of recommended sites for Oshu in the autumn.
You find some great outdoor sites, a theme park where you can really feel history and find some great restaurants that use locally grown ingredients.
【narration】
Hello.
If you are heading east, I’ve got the perfect trip for the younger generation to take by car.
First head for the Taneyama Highlands, often visited by Kenji Miyazawa.
This is SEIZA-NO-MORI in the Taneyama Highlands.
There are many outdoor facilities on this 2 hectare site.
“The stars are so close you can almost touch them. It’s a very beautiful season.
Please come and visit.”
For lunch, I recommend “MOCHITA-YA,” a soba restaurant.
It has the reputation for using local ingredients from Esashi.
One popular dish is the “MORI SOBA SET.”
The aroma of fresh soba fills the air.
“We use locally produced fresh vegetables in abundance.
We look forward to serving you.”
Next up is “Heritage Park, Fujiwara-no-Sato.”
Around 120 buildings from ancient times through the middle ages in Tohoku have been reproduced on this 20 hectare site.
“The Heian Autumn Festival is being held at Esashi Fujiwara-no-Sato. There is a chrysanthemum exhibition through Nov. 9, and you can experience an OSUNABUMI pilgrimage.
Please come and visit.”
How about “MIZUSAKI NOTEA” for some treats?
Surrounded by furniture hand-made by the owner, have some cakes and juice made with apples picked from his own orchard.
“I’ll be baking treats using a lot of my own Esashi apples this season.
Please bring your friends.”
If you are looking for a rest or a place to stay for the night, try SHUGYOKU-NO-YU’s YAKUSHIDO Hot Springs.
Warm up right, and get that silky feeling all over your skin.

90. Bike ride on Oshu Highway in Nagamachi, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan
Bike ride on Oshu Highway in Nagamachi, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan. Lazy bicycle ride on Oshu Highway in Sendai City on a sunny but windy day. It's Saturday, so not only I'm not in a hurry. Spring arrived to Japan and Sendai City. It is still quite cold, but today is a sunny day and this bike ride is a real pleasure for me. On the sidewalk, you are not deducted, sometimes I have the impression that the Japanese have a some phobia of physical contact with another human being. But maybe only I think so. These green sheets that you see from time to time on the sidewalk clode to the street is a Japanese garbage places. They filling up in the evening before the junk. Such curiosity...

Oshu TABI ROMAN #37 A Branch of Living Tradition 〜Iwate MEIJO “KAN-JIKOMI”〜
【explanation】
A guide to Brewery “Iwate MEIJO” in Maesawa-ku, Oshu-shi, Iwate.
Iwate MEIJO has received Gold Prize awards from Iwate, Tohoku and National competitions for new brands of sake.
We visited during the optimal time for brewing, known as “KAN-JIKOMI” and spoke with the chief brewer, Mr. Makoto Nakamura.
【narration】
We are Japanese sake born from a brewery in Oshu, Iwate MEIJO.
Iwate MEIJO has received Gold Prizes at competitions for new brands of sake in Iwate, Tohoku and all Japan.
Now is the best time for making sake.
Being in the middle of KAN-JIKOMI (made during winter), many of our friends are being born.
Iwate MEIJO is in Maesawa-ku, Oshu-shi.
Preparation starts early in the morning. The process starts with steamed brewer’s rice being kneaded with a mold called KOJIKIN and breaking it into small pieces on top of a table.
The brewer’s rice is the main ingredient in making sake, and we use only locally grown rice.
It is said that making Japanese sake during the coldest seasons prevents sterilization, making for a higher quality finish.
“The entire production is done with everyone working together as a team. Harmony among us is the first condition.
Every one really works well together.”
Cooling things down to around 35 degrees is optimal for fermentation, which takes three days.
The process for making undiluted sake is called “HON-JIKOMI.”
The fermented rice malt, yeast, steamed rice and other ingredients are mixed in the KOJIMURO.
After the undiluted sake is finished about three weeks later, it is moved for filtration and storage.
“We have listened and responded to our customers, and take great care in making sake.”
“I don’t think it will be inferior to last year’s sake. I can say that with
confidence.”
Teamwork and care makes this bright Iwate MEIJO sake.
Please taste this sake along with seasonal fish and other warm dishes.
