Off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture is Megijima Island (女木島), a small island well known for being the basis the popular Japanese folklore Momotaro. In addition to its association to Momotaro, visitors will a cave, sandy beaches, and an observation deck atop the mountain.
According to the legend of Momotaro, a small boy set upon defeating the resident ogres on Onigashima, the Ogre Island. Within Megijima’s mountains, visitors will find a cave near the highest peak. Caves were known to be the ogres’ fortress. And the cave on Megijima Mountain will not disappoint its visitors, with some chambers displaying scenes from the Momotaro story.
Visitors will enjoy the mountaintop park near the cave showing off breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea and its islands from its observation deck. Opposite the observation deck, visitors will find a statue of Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect of Japanese Buddhism.
In the summer, visitors can enjoy the sandy beaches located not too far away from the ferry port. There are many Japanese style bread and breakfasts called minshuku here where visitors can spend the night as well.
Walking through the island, visitors will feel a sense of nostalgia, examining the old wooden homes and narrow streets. The terminal building is one of the few modern buildings on the island. Visitors can find an information counter here. Bicycles to explore the island can be rented here as well. Snacks can also be purchased here.
Megijima is also the one of the venues used in the Setouchi Triennale Art Festival. The island is the permanent home to a few art pieces for the 2010 and 2013 show.
Note: Many of the pieces may not be seen during the week and in the winter.
Access Information:
From Takamatsu Port, there is a ferry which operates between the port, Megijima and Ogijima. There is a ferry every two hours. The one-way journey will take about 20 minutes and the fare is 370 yen.

▼What is Saijo Inari Temple?
The official name of the temple is “Saijo Inari-san Myokyo-ji.” Because torii are symbols of shrines, the torii at Saijo Inari makes this temple a rare example of the religions of ancient Japan. Every year about 3 million people visit this temple, where “Saijoi Kyo-o Daibosatsu,” believed responsible for prosperity in business and good harvests, is worshipped.

Japan Travel, Historic Kibi Plain-- for Cyclists, Rental bicycle, shrines, temples Okayama11 Moopon
The Kibi Plain located outside central Okayama City was the center of the Kibi Kingdom, an ancient, powerful clan. Historical attractions such as such as burial mounds and shrines are located on the plain.
The Kibi Kingdom is famous for the Legend of Prince Kititsuhiko. Prince Kibitsuhiko is a prince from a rivaling clan (Yamato Clan). He came to the kingdom to defeat an ogre. From this legend, the famous folktale of Momotaro emerged. Momotaro is a story of boy, born from a peach, who defeated a group of terrorizing ogres.
Cyclists will be happy to learn a popular 17 kilometer long cycling route through the Kibi Plain between Bizen-Ichinomiya and Soja Stations. This route loosely follows the legend of Prince Kibitsuhiko and passes several important shrines, temples and burial mounds along the way.
Though visitors can start the route from either side, the route is slightly easier to locate if begun from Bizen-Ichinomiya Station.
A “mama chari” single speed bicycle can be rented rented at either station. Users can return the bicycle at the other end or at Bitchu-Kokubunji Temple .
Koikui Shrine (literally carp eating shrine) is famous for the location where Prince Kibitsuhiko first subdued the ogre. After the ogre transformed and fled as a bird, the prince changed into a hawk to hunt him down. As a result, the ogre made the deadly mistake of changing into a carp, whereas the prince turned into a cormorant.

Tsukuriyama Kofun
The Kibi Plain is home to several burial mounds (kofun) which were constructed during the Kofun Period (300 to 538). Tsukuriyama Kofun is the largest in the region, and was the largest kofun in Japan at the time of its construction. On the top of the mound is a shrine visitors can visit. There is also a trail along the top of the kofun that offers beautiful views over the surrounding plains.
Bitchu-Kokubunji Temple founded in 741 is a 34 meter tall, five story pagoda. Near the temple is a bicycle shop rental shop where bicycles can be rented or returned.
Alternatively, there is a bus to Soja Station for visitors who do not wish to cycle the route’s last section (approximately 5 kilometers).

Lying along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea in Kagawa Prefecture is the Takamatsu Castle. This castle, also known as the Tamomo Castle, is one of the few castles built along the water. The moat of the Takamatsu Castle actually draws directly from the sea.
Built in 1590 by Ikoma Chikamasa, the Ikoma Clan were the original rulers of this castle. Relatives of the Tokugawa Shogun, the Matsudaira Clan overtook the castle 54 years later. The Matsudaira Clan ruled for the rest of the Edo Period. During the Meiji Period, the castle main keep was torn down. Currently, there is a strong movement to reconstruct this castle, known as one of the three Great Waterfront Castles in Japan.
Within the castle grounds, there are only a few of the castle’s original buildings. Originally twenty, only two turrets, the Ushitora Yagura and the Tsukimi Yagura, remain today. Visitors can also see the Asahimon Gate as well as the moats and walls to imagine how glorious Takamatsu castle was in its heyday. The castle garden is well maintained and visitors can appreciate the beauty of Japanese gardens here.
Hiunkaku building lies in the center of the castle park. With its large tatami mat rooms, this building is used as an exhibition space/community hall. Tea ceremony and flower arrangement classes are held here.
The hours of entry to the castle vary according to the month.

Museum Kuil Yashima
Buka: pukul 9:00 – 17:00
Tutup: Buka sepanjang tahun
Harga Tiket: daerah Kuil: Gratis

Japan Rail Trip #12: Okayama city centre walk
We left Kochi for Osaka, but would be stopping at Okayama for a look around on the way.
Again the train journey back to Okayama was spectacular with the highlight being the crossing of Seto bridge.
We decided to walk in Okayama city. Unfortunately there was not enough time to look at Okayama castle, Korakuen Japanese Garden etc,so we decided to walk around the Shotengai, the local shopping street.
Okayama is a bit of a quirky city with interesting bits that stand out like the police office at the side of a canal and some of the street clocks.
We entered local small canteen style of restaurant and had udon noodle and curry rice. Reasonable price and homemade taste and the restaurant had a nice authentic retro style to it.
Along the walk Nigel's shoes decided to die with the sole detaching, so we both decided it was time to upgrade / replace our shoes.
Because we gave our shoes to the shop for recycling we were awarded a 5% discount. We also attempted to get the shoes for duty free but made the mistake of wearing the shoes prior to claiming the duty free discount, which made duty free null.
The correct procedure would have been to take the shoes in their box to the duty free first and then changed the shoes at the shop and handed the old shoes over for the 5% discount.
We also noted that the Okayama's restaurants and bars looked very affordable and good value.
After that it was time to move to Osaka.

- JETRO Bonsai Export Conference -
In November 2013, JETRO Kagawa invited prominent bonsai dealers from three countries in Europe: England, Italy and France to meet them with forteen bonsai growers from the Kinashi and Kokubunji districts of Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, with an aim at creating a business opportunity for the both parties. The culture of Japanese bonsai has spread in Europe and market for Bonsai with a certain level of scale is expected in the region.
- Bonsai produced in Kagawa Prefecture -
Kagawa Prefecture is the Japan's largest producer of pine bonsai with an 80% of the total domestic market share. In addition to the beautiful tree forms, pines grown in well-drained sandy loam in Kagawa are popular for their hardy build and resistance to root rot. Their popularity is not limited to Japan, and as exports to foreign countries increase, these Kagawa Bonsai are gaining popularity around the world as BONSAI.
- History of Bonsai from Kagawa -
Producing Bonsai in Kagawa Prefecture has a long history and is said to
start about 200 years ago during the Edo period when wild trees in the
mountains and along the coast were potted and sold. The mild Seto-uchi
climate, with little temperature variation throughout the year, long
sunshine duration and little rainfall and excellent pruning and grafting
techniques accumulated through seedling production of fruit trees and
mulberry have made this area suitable for growing Bonsai. The main
production centers are the Kinashi and Kokubunji districts in the western
part of Takamatsu City. In addition to the main products, Pinus thunbergii,
Pinus thunbergii var. corticosa and Pinus parviflora are produced in the
regions.

23 Moopon
