Poros island: top weekend destination.
It's full of pine trees which reach the shores and the sandy beaches The residents of Poros are no different from other Greek islanders in spontaneity, dignity and hospitality. The large homes on the beach have a neoclassical style in contrast to the common duplex houses in Brinia, Milo, Pounta and Kasteli. The first dwellings were built in 1463 and located around the famous Clock.
In the center of the city you can find the Town Hall, the archaeological museum, a public library along with a reception hall for exhibitions and other cultural events.
Many taverns are sparcely located among the picturesque alleyways and the whitewashed houses of Poros which are surrounded by bougainvillea . Visitors can enjoy souvenir shops, cafeterias, taverns and clubs playing Greek and English music all along the pier.
Along the coast going towards the training center, we come across the open air movie theater Diana which has premiers of the best films shown this past winter. Right next to it is the exhibition hall of Poros that constantly has exhibitions.
Poros is comprised of two islands, Sphairia and Kalavria, of which the former is a volcanic rock and the latter planted with pine trees. Poros is easily accessible from Piraeus (Ferries depart from GateE8 in Piraeus) and from Peloponnese (Galatas).
Bus and taxi terminals are located in the center of the beach area. Access to boats that go along the shores of Galata is also available there. Public transportation around the island runs pretty smoothly all day. Buses leave every hour while boats depart every ten minutes. On the beach you can find scooter and bike rentals whereas cars are rented right across the island, in Galata.

Sailing Through Greece: Saronic Gulf E24, Poros
Next episode: Saronic Gulf E25, Agistri
This Episode: Saronic Gulf E24 , The town of Poros, is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill. Its most famous landmark is a clock tower, built in 1927. The Archaeological Museum at Korizis Square, houses findings from the Sanctuary of Poseidon, from ancient Troizen, and from other archaeological sites nearby. The ruins of The Sanctuary of Poseidon are still accessible on a hilltop close to the town. Poros was the site of the first naval base in modern Greece, established in 1827 during the Greek War of Independence. The site is still used today by the Hellenic Navy as a training centre for naval personnel. The Poros Shell Museum. Founded in 2006, has a permanent exhibition of shells from the Greek Seas displayed at the Chatzopouleios Library. The Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, built on the slope of a pine forest in 1720 AD is located 4 km east of the main city of Poros . Poros is a small island-pair in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf, about 58 km south from Piraeus and separated from the Peloponnese by a 200 m wide sea channel, with the town of Galatas on the mainland across the strait. Like other ports in the Saronic, it is a popular weekend destination for Athenians. Poros consists of two islands: Sphairia, the southern part, which is of volcanic origin, where today's city is located, and Kalaureia , the northern and largest part. A bridge connects the two islands over a narrow strait. The island is rich with vegetation, much of the northern and far eastern/western sides of the island are bushy, whereas large areas of old pine forest are found in the south and centre of the island. It has a good road network and adequate tourist infrastructure.
Wild horses on Ainos, Kefalonia
The horses are usually around the reservoir near Zoodochos Pigi monastery. Coordinates: 38°06'24.1N 20°43'02.1E
We were there around 3pm and went with car up until the reservoir.
I STRONGLY suggest you not to go there with car, because the gravel road is a disaster (or go with a 4x4). Trust me, it is really that bad. It trashed my tires and scratched the bottom of the car. Park in Arginia where the asphalt road ends and proceed on foot (~1 hour walking distance).
