Thousands gather at Moncada Barracks for cortege
(3 Dec 2016) People from all the country gathered outside the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba on Saturday, to see the convoy carrying the ashes of the leader of the Cuban revolution arrive in the city.
The symbolic Moncada Barracks –nowadays a school- used to be military barracks where on July 26, 1953 Fidel Castro and a group of rebels failed on taking control of the place and start the revolution to free the island from Fulgencio Batista.
Dozens of rebels died, Castro was arrested but later released.
Ending a nine-day period of mourning and a tour of 800km through the country, Fidel Castro ashes will be buried in Santa Ifigenia cemetery on Sunday morning in a private ceremony where his family and closed friends will participate.
The route traces in reverse the victory tour Castro and his bearded rebels took after overthrowing the forces of strongman Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and Fidel Castro's brother, Raul Castro, joined the event alongside prominent figures of the Communist Party, as Diaz-Canel continued to denounce the policies implemented by the United States to harm the Caribbean island.
The United States administration has begun to act with greater aggressiveness to prevent the arrival of oil to Cuba, Diaz-Canel said.
The genocidal plan is to affect even more the quality of life of the population, its progress and even their hopes with the objective of hurting the Cuban family in their daily life, their basic needs and also accuse the Cuban government of inefficiency, he added.
The anniversary of the attack on the Moncada barracks, commemorates an armed attack that took place in the city of Santiago by a group of young revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro, that sparked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution in 1953.
