Monemvasia Greece, the Fortress Town | Καστροπολιτεία της Μονεμβασιάς
Municipality of Monemvasia Greece
Production: Filmiki Productions
Directed by: thecOre
Music: Panagiotis Pavlakis
The Byzantine fortress town of Monemvasia, the stone ship referred to by the poet Yiannis Ritsos, stands sentinel on the southeastern coast of Laconia, ready to take its visitors on a historic journey back through the ages.
Castles, walls, old mansions, narrow cobbled lanes, churches, low arches and vaults, coats of arms, imperial marble thrones, Byzantine icons all give the impression of a town untouched by time.
Referred to variously throughout the ages as the Gibraltar of the East, the Castle above the Clouds, or the Castle of Flowers, among others, it is situated on a small islet linked to the mainland by a causeway and bridge, as if floating on the edge of the Myrtoon Sea.
The single entrance that gives the rock its name (moni emvasia in Greek) is a passageway into its past, beginning in the 6th century AD.

Monemvasia (Greek: Μονεμβασία) is a town and a municipality in Laconia, Greece. The town is located on a small island off the east coast of the Peloponnese. The island is linked to the mainland by a short causeway 200m in length. Its area consists mostly of a large plateau some 100 metres above sea level, up to 300 m wide and 1 km long, the site of a powerful medieval fortress. The town walls and many Byzantine churches remain from the medieval period. The seat of the municipality is the town Molaoi.[2]
The town's name derives from two Greek words, mone and emvasia, meaning single entrance. Its Italian form, Malvasia, gave its name to Malmsey wine. Monemvasia's nickname is the Gibraltar of the East or The Rock.

Inside Monemvasia Fortress (Part 1)
This is the Gibraltor of the Mediterranean. A medieval fortress in Laconia (Sparta) that withstood a three year siege in the 12th century. A small walled town with thick walls and a single entrance, it's an eerie place when it is empty. I was there for a walk around early in the morning and I was alone...the way I like it. Inside Monemvasia Fortress (Part 2)
Narrow, winding cobblestone alleyways with tiny shops and cafes. It's strange walking through here alone in silence. There is a small stone dock at the foot of the fortress walls outside.
Monemvasia, Greece, from the Hotel Byzantino
While visiting Greece, I stayed for two nights in the fortress of Monemvasia, a 13th century Ottoman castle just off the Krithina Mountains on the southeast corner of the Peloponnese peninsula. [Friday, 30 September 2011]
Inside Monemvasia Fortress (Part 3)
Climbing to the top of the mountain. It was already very hot at around 8:00 in the morning. A beautiful September day with no wind. An interesting climb with stone pathways here and there that eventually lead to the top. There are the remains of an old church and battlements there. There are no railings at the top, so don't take children up there because it's a 300+ ft drop off the cliff if you're not paying attention. The view from the top was worth every sweaty step to get there. More at motorcyclegreece.ca

The island of Monemvasia was separated from the mainland by an earthquake in 375 AD. The majority of the island's area is a plateau about 100 metres above sea level, and the town of the same name is built on the slope to the south-east of the rock, overlooking Palaia Monemvasia bay. Many of the streets are narrow and fit only for pedestrian and donkey traffic. A small hamlet of about 10 houses lies to the northwest
