Malaga is blessed with wonderful beaches and mountains. It also boasts an abundance of natural spaces, parks and gardens. One such garden is the strikingly beautiful Jardín Botánico de la Concepción, the botanical and historical garden: a spectacular tropical forest situated within 49 hectares of land, of which, 23 hectares are botanical garden open to the public.
The gardens are always worth a visit, but during the summer the gardens open at night as well, allowing visitors to appreciate the charms of the plants under moon light. The nocturnal visits are also characterised by the presence of an actress playing Amalia Heredia (Marchioness of Loring) who accompanies the tours, while explaining her life story. A must-see when you are in town!

Parque Natural Montes de Málaga

El Parque Natural de Montes de Málaga está formado por una cadena montañosa de media altura que discurre paralela a la costa mediterránea, con temperaturas suaves y altos grados de humedad. Está situado en los términos municipales de Casabermeja, Colmenar y Málaga.
La realidad de este espacio está muy ligada al siglo XV, cuando fue conquistado por los Reyes Católicos en 1487. El reparto de las tierras entre los vencedores dio lugar a la sustitución del bosque mediterráneo por cultivos de viñas, almendros y olivos. A partir de este momento es cuando comienzan las fuertes inundaciones que asolan la ciudad de Málaga. A finales del siglo XIX es cuando tienen lugar las repoblaciones de pinares en la cuenca del río Guadalmedina para evitar inundaciones y así se origina el Parque.
La fauna es interesante y bien conservada; siendo uno de los escasos enclaves en los que se localiza en la actualidad el camaleón.
El espacio ofrece recursos naturales como la madera, leña, corcho, ganadería, especies cinegéticas, etc. Sin embargo, su función más representativa está muy relacionada con su cercanía a la villa de Málaga que ha dado lugar a que se convierta en auténtico pulmón de la ciudad, usándolo la población como área de recreo y esparcimiento.

Leaving the city by Calle Victoria, the road will lead you up through the heart of the Natural Park, where you can enjoy spectacular views either side of the road. It's a pretty steep road- one included several times on LA VUELTA DE ESPAÑA - taking you up to 900 metres altitud with a distance of 16 kms. It's a great training route! My day @ Montes de Malaga and back via Casabermeja to Malaga.
Please take care about 2 things when you go out on your mountainbike from Malaga to Casabermja and back using this tough route
1. The Los Rico Strava segment contains 25% sections and is 2.5 12,5% average combined with a tough road. On foot you make it anyhow but it will take some time.
2. Warning about the farm near coordinates 36.875003, -4.411527. Here is group of stray dogs. They are not willing to let you pass. Give them some of your food and you are good to go :-)
