Lake Ohrid in Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia
Lake Ohrid straddles the mountainous border between southwestern part of North Macedonia and eastern Albania. It is one of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes, with a unique aquatic ecosystem of worldwide importance, with more than 200 endemic species.
Lake Ohrid was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979, and in 2010, NASA named one of Titan's lakes after it. In 2014, the Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary Reserve between Albania and North Macedonia was added to UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The towns situated at the lakeside are Pogradec in Albania, along with Ohrid and Struga in North Macedonia. The lake is otherwise densely surrounded by settlements in the form of villages and resorts in both basin countries.
Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake of the Balkans, with a maximum depth of 288 m and a mean depth of 155 m. It covers an area of 358 km², containing an estimated 55.4 km³ of water. It is 30.4 km long by 14.8 km wide at its maximum extent with a shoreline length of 87.53 km, shared between North Macedonia and Albania. Of the total surface area, 248 square kilometres belongs to North Macedonia and 110 km2 belongs to Albania.
There are endless amounts of things to do here. Whether you’re interested in being active, cultural or lazy, you’ll find something to suit your mood.
We were at the lake in the wintertime, and there were still loads of things to do. If you come in the summer, you’ll never be bored.
Sveti Naum Monastery (St. Naum)
This Eastern Orthodox monastery was established in 905 by Saint Naum…who is also buried in the church! Entering into the complex you’ll pass under a stone archway, across a little river and past many peacocks.
The monastery itself is lovely, but once you reach the actual church, which has incredible views of the mountains and lake, you’ll be completely in awe.
Inside are stone columns, well-preserved frescos on the walls and ceiling and of course, Saint Naum! The story goes that if you kneel in front of the cushion, and press your ear to it, you’ll be able to hear Saint Naum’s heart beating…
This was our favourite site during our time at Lake Ohrid, do not miss it. You’ll find this monastery 30 kilometers south of the city of Ohrid, and you can get here by car, taxi, or by boat.
Sveti Jovan Monastery (St. John Monastery)
Another picture-perfect monastery, but this time it’s Macedonian Orthodox. You’ll find this church clinging to a cliff above Kaneo Beach just outside of Ohrid city. The views of the lake from here are outstanding, and if you want to find a peaceful place to just hangout and relax, this is it.
The walk here is great as well. You can wander through the old town, and along the lakeshore, before arriving at the church. To complete the circle, head up the hill along a path into the forest. You’ll eventually arrive at the fort.
Samuel’s Fortress
This was the capital of the first Bulgarian empire, when Tsar Samuel ruled in the 10th century. Today this is a popular spot for tourists. The fortress is well intact and the views from here are sublime.
Church of St. Sophia
This church is one of the most important monuments in all of Macedonia. It’s been home to a number of faiths since 850 – Christian, Bulgarian Orthodox, and Muslim. Inside you’ll find architecture, art and frescos from the Middle Ages.
Ancient Theatre
This theatre was constructed in 200 BC, and is from the Hellenistic period (between the death of Alexander the Great and the start of the Roman Empire). Only the lower section of the theatre exists, but it’s still very impressive. Actually, during the Roman times, this theatre was used for Gladiator fighting!
Check out the Traditional Homes
Ohrid’s architecture is unique. The lanes are narrow and very tight, with houses actually built hanging over the roads. The houses are all painted white to help with the intense heat of the sun, and there aren’t many open areas or yards due to lack of space, and to help avoid the strong winds from the lake.
A few noteworthy homes to check out are Robevci & Uranija houses, and the homes along Car Samoil and Ilindenska streets.
Swimming, Snorkelling and Diving
If you visit Lake Ohrid during the summer you’ll be able to fully enjoy all of the water activities. Even though Lake Ohrid can be visited year-round, all of the water activities can only be done in the summer.
Hiking and Walking
There are a few trails around the old town of Lake Ohrid, but for a more exciting adventure, why not walk around the entire lake?!
If you don’t have about a week to spend hiking and camping along the shoreline, you can make your way to the village of Elshani on the east coast. This is a great starting point for numerous trails around the area. You can also hike to the villages of Konjsko or Pestani from here.

Macedonian National Holiday Saint Clemens of Ohrid 2007
08.12.2007 - Celebrating the Macedonian national holiday in the Republic of Macedonia to honour the first medieval Macedonian Bishop, scholar and writer, Saint Clemens of Ohrid/ Kliment Ohridski (ca. 840-916).
The principle written testimonies to Clement's life are his hagiography known as Comprehensive, by Archbishop Theophilact of Ohrid, written at the end of the 11th century, and the Prologue by Demetrius Chomatianus, an Ohrid archbishop of the l3th century. Both are written in Ecclesiastical Greek. As to the life of Nahum, Clement's companion and brother-in-faith, it is most thoroughly, though still scantily, dealt with in his two Slavonic Hagiographies which remained unknown until the end of the last century. According to the written documents, the faithful disciples of Cyril and Methodius, the godly and righteous Clement, Nahum, Gorazd, Angelarius and Sava, were of equal learning and maturity as apostles. Methodius had been preparing Gorazd to be his successor, but destiny decided otherwise. Clement and the rest of the exiles, following the Danube via Singidunum (Belgrade) reached Pliska and the court of the Bulgarian Prince Boris-Michael. Having long wished for his own clerical elite, the latter gave the exhausted newcomers a warm welcome. After a few months Clement was appointed to Ohrid, Devol and Glavenica to preach the gospel and introduce the Slavonic alphabet to the flock there. Nahum stayed in the Monastery of St. Panteleimon near Preslav teaching the monks and instructing them in the Gospel.
Seven years later in 893, after the coronation of Simeon, Clement was summoned to Kutmicevica and to the new capital, Preslav. Simeon - one of the most educated spirits of the time, a child of the Great School - immediately summoned a council at which Clement was probably also present. It was expected that Clement would be given the position of the prince's royal counselor and assistant. This, however, did not happen. The reformation of the alphabet and the introduction of the Cyrillic (knigi - letters), apparently attenuated the relationship between the Ohrid apostle and the prince, who was later to become the Bulgarian czar. Clement was appointed to a peripheral province of the state, the Velicka bishopric. This appointment somewhat resembles a reproach, a distancing. The disagreement on the painful issue of the alphabet and Clement's opposition to the new hellenized alphabet appear to be the reasons for the alienation between Clement and the Prince Simeon over the cultural policy of the state.
The benefits were manifold. The Apostolic work continued in Ohrid. Clement was joined by Nahum. The Ohrid region became the centre of the first Slavonic University. The alphabet used was the Glagolitic. The tradition of Cyril and Methodius was preserved and continued. Ohrid was thenceforth a spring of new water, a fast-flowing stream which flowed unchecked through Macedonia and merged, as a constituent part, into the vast sea of Slavonic and Byzantine culture.
The role played by the founders of the first schooling in the Balkans was immense. Legends speak of 3000 students. Theophilact says that Clement preached ...in a few words... about the ecclesiastical life, the memory of the saints, the enlightenment of the soul... He translated continuously: chants, psalms, festal fragments from the Bible, moralities... Thus the Slavonic liturgy was beginning to be created.
In their beloved Ohrid, Clement and Naum built their churches on opposite sides of the lake. In the town itself Clement dedicated a shrine to the holy healer Panteleimon. At the same time, towards the end of the 9th century, by the springs of the Crn Drim river, Naum erected a monument to the archangels of the bodiless army, Gabriel and Michael. Both Clement and Naum were buried in the tombs which they themselves had built in the churches they bequested: Naum in the year 910, and Clement six years later, in 916. The belief that St. Naum in his monastery heals the mentally ill and those possessed by demons survives to this very day.

In this episode, David takes us with him as he checks out the top things to see and do in Ohrid, Macedonia – a city at the center of Lake Ohrid tourism.
David starts with what to see in the city of Ohrid. He begins in the Old Town, which is home to several beautiful buildings like the historic Robevci House. He then makes his way up the hill to see some of Ohrid’s historical monuments. First up is St. Jovan de Kaneo, a Byzantine-style church perched above the shore of Lake Ohrid. This is one of the most photographed places in Macedonia.
Another beautiful church to check out is St. Clement Church. David’s guide Zivka gives some background on St. Clement. Then it’s time to head to to Tsar Samuil’s Fortress for amazing views over Lake Ohrid. Samuil was Tsar of the First Bulgarian Empire and best known for defending Bulgaria against Byzantine domination. He eventually moved the capital of the Empire to Ohrid and built one of the greatest strongholds in the Balkans. Today the fortress is a great place for panoramic views of the Lake and the city of Ohrid. Admission is 30 Macedonian denar.
Up next: The Roman Theatre. It was built to accommodate 4,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial battles. Recently it was uncovered and is free to enter. The acoustics here are wonderful!
Heading back down the hill David visits one of the most important monuments in Macedonia, the Church of St. Sophia. Again, Zivka chimes in with some more information about the Church. The surviving frescos dates back to the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.
David and the team walk back to the main square of Ohrid to shop for Ohrid’s famous pearls. He introduces us to a man whose family was the first to bring the tradition to Macedonia. The Talev family workshop has been here since 1924.
David reminds us that no visit to Ohrid is complete without first taking a boat ride on Lake Ohrid. From here, you’ll get magnificent views of the city and lakeshore. Hire a local captain from the Ohrid Marina for one-hour tour.
The next day, David embarks on his first day trip from Ohrid, bringing him south of the city to National Park Galicica. The park separates Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. It’s a popular with hikers and nature lovers who want to enjoy the clean, fresh air and stunning views of the lakes and towns below. You can also take your own car like David did.
A visit to the Monastery of St. Naum and the Black Drim springs is also a fantastic day trip from Ohrid. The monastery is located on a rocky outcrop at the southernmost part of Lake Ohrid near the Albanian border. Inside this cross-shaped church is the tomb of St. Naum. David sees if the local legend is true – you can hear St. Naum’s heartbeat if you put your ear to his tomb… it’s up to you to judge!
Once finished seeing St. Naum, David heads down to the riverbank to hire a rowboat to take him to see the crystal clear springs of the Drim River.
So that was David’s list of top things to see and do in Ohrid. Definitely one of the highlights of his Macedonia trip and a gorgeous destination to experience in the Balkans.

OHRID - Macedonia Travel Guide | Around The World
Ohrid (Охрид) is a city in the Republic of Macedonia and the seat of Ohrid Municipality. It is the largest city on Lake Ohrid and the eighth-largest city in the country, with over 42,000 inhabitants as of 2002. Ohrid is notable for once having had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and has been referred to as a Jerusalem (of the Balkans). The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant. It is located southwest of Skopje, west of Resen and Bitola. In antiquity the city was known under the ancient Greek: Λυχνίς (Lychnis) and Latin: Lychnidus, probably meaning city of light, from Greek λυχνίς (lychnis, gen. lychnidos), a precious stone that emits light, from λύχνος (lychnos), lamp, portable light. By 879 AD, the town was no longer called Lychnidos but was referred to by the assimilated native people as Ohrid, possibly from the Slavic words vo hrid, meaning on the hill, as the ancient town of Lychnidos was at the top of the hill. In Macedonian and the other South Slavic languages, the name of the city is Ohrid (Охрид). In Albanian, the city is known as Ohër or Ohri and in modern Greek Ochrida (Οχρίδα, Ωχρίδα) and Achrida (Αχρίδα).
There is a nearby international airport, Ohrid Airport (now known as St. Paul the Apostle Airport) that is open all year round.
GFK Ohrid Lihnidos are a football team playing at the SRC Biljanini Izvori stadium in the city. As of the 2016–17 season they play in the third tier of the Macedonian Football League system.
RK Ohrid are a handball team playing at SRC Biljanini Izvori arena, with a capacity of 2,500. As of the 2016-17 season they play in the Macedonian Handball Super League, which is the top tier.
The Ohrid Swimming Marathon is an international open water swimming competition, always taking place in the waters of Lake Ohrid. The swimmers are supposed to swim 30 km (19 mi) from the monastery of Saint Naum to the Ohrid harbor.
There is a legend supported by observations by the 17th century Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi that there were 365 chapels within the town boundaries, one for every day of the year. Today this number is significantly smaller.

Катедрална црква Св. Софија, Охрид - Cathedral church Saint Sophia, Ohrid
The Church of St. Sophia (Macedonian: Црква Света Софија, Crkva Sveta Sofija) is located in the city of Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia. The church is one of the most important monuments of Macedonia, housing architecture and art from the Middle Ages.

Ohrid (1954) - Macedonian movie (1/2)
Macedonian movie from 1954 - Ohrid is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid in the Republic of Macedonia.
Ohrid is notable for having once had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and is referred to as the Macedonian Jerusalem. The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant.
In 1980, town Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In the 10th century Ohrid was the capital of the first Macedonian Slavic State, the Kingdom of Tsar Samuel (976-1014):
In 969 a conflict between the Byzantine Empire and the state of Kiev occurred. During the most severe conflicts between the Bulgarians, Byzantine and Russians, the Bulgarian Czar Peter died. His death in Macedonia was used as an excuse to start-up for a liberation resurrection. From the very beginning of the uprising incited by the sons of a Slav prince Nikola: David, Moses, Aaron and Samuel, the town of Ohrid and its surroundings were in the very centre of the tumults. The uprising started in 969 and quickly stretched out throughout the territory of the former Sklavinia (province) Berzitia. This territory and other neighbouring regions were freed from the Bulgarian rule. The former Macedonian sclavinias (provinces) were united into a Macedonian Slavic state known as Samuel's Empire. Soon he conquered parts of Greece, Epirus, a large part of Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Dalmacia. This was not a Bulgarian state, but an independent Macedonian State with a capital in Ohrid, Macedonia, not in Preslav, Bulgaria where the Bulgarian kings ruled. Samuel was defeated in 1014 by Basil II when the Byzantine army won the battle on Mount Belasica capturing 15,000 of his soldiers. All were blinded, except one in every one hundred, who were left with one eye to lead the rest back to Samuel who escaped death at Belasica. At the site Samuel suffered a stroke and died two days later on October 6, 1014.

Документарен филм за градот Охрид, прва епизода
NOTE: This is educational material about Macedonian history and traditions of Macedonian people through centuries
Ohrid (Macedonian: Охрид [ˈɔxrit] (About this sound listen)) is a city in the Republic of Macedonia, the seat of Ohrid Municipality. It is the largest city on Lake Ohrid and the eighth-largest city in the country, with over 42,000 inhabitants as of 2002. Ohrid once had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and has been referred to as a Jerusalem (of the Balkans).[2][4] The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant. It is located southwest of Skopje, west of Resen and Bitola. In 1979 and in 1980 respectively, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as Cultural and Natural World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Ohrid is one of only 28 sites that are part of UNESCO's World Heritage that are Cultural as well as Natural sites
There is a legend supported by observations by the 17th century Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi that there were 365 chapels within the town boundaries, one for every day of the year. Today this number is significantly smaller.
