Kathmandu has often been by some as a flawless jewel in a unique setting. No other place in the world has the concentration of culture, art and tradition that exists in the Kathmandu valley (1300m.). Kathmandu is the crossroads for the many ethnic groups of Nepal and for visitors from all over the world every year. Nestled in the central hills of Nepal, Kathmandu is at once medieval and modern. The Kathmandu valley sprawls at the junction of two sacred rivers, Bagmati and Bishnumati. Just cross the Bagmati River to the south is Patan, on ancient city of temples, while Bhadgoon with its thousands of homes and temples shrines lies six miles to the east. More then two hundred years ago these three cities housed the Royal places of three different kingdoms that divided the valley palaces surviving today.
They say there are more temples than houses in Kathmandu valley in past. Great temples with heavily carved exteriors, massive white-domed Buddhist stupas and hundreds of smaller Buddhist chaityas small temples with low, ornate archways-and tiny temples containing once lone idol all are an integral pieces of the unique mosaic that is Kathmandu city. To really discover the Kathmandu valley you need to begin exploring from well beyond the city limits, and travel in from the outside of Nepal in order to touch its roots. Fortunately there are many very beautiful walks within the Kathmandu valley that combine cultural experience and natural heritage.

HCT MOSAIC'10 The Spirit of Caring - Nepal trip
On Saturday, April 3rd, a group of thirteen IT students from Sharjah Men's College, along with two faculty members, departed from Sharjah International Airport for Nepal. Within the theme of MOSAIC 2010, 'The Spirit of Caring', the students travelled to a remote mountain school called 'Sri Sanskrit' in Nepal's Tandrang province, taking with them ten refurbished computers to establish a computer lab for their less fortunate Nepalese counterparts.
Over the last two months students have been busy recycling parts from discarded PCs to build the refurbished ones for the project. They also sourced and installed software and tested the machines thoroughly before their departure.
'In this project, the students used a lot of the skills they have learned in their studies' Dr John Raven, one of the organizers of the project explained. 'Computer hardware, network design, software installation and customization, troubleshooting and testing are all important aspects of our IT curriculum and this project has allowed students to apply these skills in a real and meaningful way. Many students have contributed to the project and they have all been very excited about it'.
The project has been organized in partnership with a charity organization called 'Children of the Mountain'. Mr. John Matthews, International director and founder of the charity, explained that many children in this remote community have never seen a computer before and that the new facility could make a real difference to those living in the region. It is hoped that the people living on the hill will learn new skills and embrace modern technology -- skills that they can then apply when they seek work in the future. The students also gave training sessions to some of the local teachers and managed to paint a kindergarten classroom.
School uniforms and stationery items were also bought and donated with money raised by Stephan Ottewill, English faculty at Sharjah Women's College.
It was a culturally enriching trip for students who also managed to squeeze in a flight over the Himalayas and Mount Everest. According to the other faculty member on the trip, Ms Rosemary McConville, 'Our students have returned to college, vastly enriched by the experience. Typical comments were:
Abdulrahman Murad: 'I was happy when I showed them how to use the computer. They did not know how to use a mouse and I showed them how to use their whole hand`.
Mohamed Ali: `Except for the dangerous roads, the trip was amazing -- full of adventures and was unique. It makes me appreciate my life in the UAE and my country`.
Hassan Ali: `In the beginning I did not like the environment -- dirty, not developed bad streets. But when I saw the people I forgot all the bad things about the country. I was just thinking how to help them develop and share the technology that we have in our country`.

Everest Base Camp Trek: The Logistics
Hiking gear
Since Jeff and I were traveling and spent a month in Bali before our Everest basecamp trek, we were wildly unprepared for the trek. We did have base layers and some long sleeves, but not much else! However, it is good to know that you can find everything you need in Katmandu, Lukla or even higher, up to Namche Bazaar at 3,400m - however, it does get a little more expensive as you go up, of course.
We strongly recommend to rent sleeping bags and down jackets - we rented both of those for about $2.50 per day per person at the Kala Pattar shop in Thamel, Katmandu. We also bought the rest of our hiking gear, including hiking backpacks, hiking boots, gloves, hats, neck warmers, fleece-doubled hiking pants and warm socks at the same shop - the more you buy, the more you can haggle!
Aside from finding a good backpack to carry everything on your back, it is an absolute must that you also have an easy access bag, like a bumbag, for all those things you’ll be needing easy access to like your phone, chapstick, tissues, money, permits, snacks, camera, etc. We highlight recommend Eastpak products, and neither of us travel anywhere without their bumbags around our necks.
Altitude
It is important to inform yourself and your group members about the effects of altitude and AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Early symptoms from 2,500m can include a strong headache, and you need to stop climbing. Start descending immediately if you experience dizziness, shortness of breath while resting, nausea or exhaustion in addition to the headache. AMS can lead to HAPE (high altitude pulmonary oedema) or HACE (high altitude cerebral oedema), which are both life threatening, but usually only occur at very high altitude. Make sure to be aware and to follow the recommendations to avoid AMS, and don’t climb more than 500 meters a day above 3,000 meters. If you are feeling unwell, you can inform the lodge owners, they are very helpful and most can organize a helicopter rescue if needed.
Diamox should not be taken by pregnant women or anyone with liver or kidney issues.
Everest Base Camp Trek: The Full Itinerary
Day 1 - Katmandu (4,593ft / 1,400m) - Lukla (9,334ft / 2,845m) to Phakding (8,563ft / 2,610m) to Monjo (9,301ft / 2,835m)
Trekking time: 3 hours from Lukla to Phakding + 3 hours from Phakding to Monjo. Total 6 hours
The trek to Everest base camp starts with a relatively nerve wracking flight, in the smallest plane we’ve ever taken - only 7 seats, and one flight attendant! You will be offered mints and cotton for your ears as the plane takes off from Katmandu and zigzags in between mountains to approach Tenzing–Hillary Airport in Lukla.
Tip: Make sure to seat on the plane’s left side for the best views of the Himalayas!
You will see Lukla’s famous short landing strip with its 11.7% gradient appear in front of you. While it can make you nervous, embrace the feeling of landing on the 500m strip, it will definitely be a good story to tell!
Once you get out of the plane, you will find yourself in the second smallest airport in the world. From there, grab your bag, and let’s head on the trek!
You should normally arrive early morning, before 8.30am, so you can be in Phakding for lunch.
Start walking on the path and enjoy the first 2 hours going downhill - how easy, you will think. Beware, as you will have to go up during the last 2 hours of the trek!
Stop in Phakding for lunch halfway, and continue another 3 hours of uphill hiking to Monjo, through beautiful sceneries with prayer wheels and suspended bridges where you can spend your first night.

Sacred Beauty - Sunrise Odyssey | Nepal
Highlights of our Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal! An arduous but yet extremely rewarding journey. This trip is the epitome of the quote “it’s the journey that matters, not the destination”.
When we finally reached the base camp after 7 gruelling days, we were overwhelmed with emotion. Not because the scenery at the base camp was exceptionally breathtaking, but because of the countless days of sweat and tears that we’ve endured. Not forgetting, getting hit really badly by altitude sickness.
