Ride Day 28: Antigua, Guatemala to Pacaya Volcano, Guatemala
Full Post: My trip today takes me from Antigua, Guatemala to the Antigua, Guatemala to Pacaya Volcano, near Guatemala City. I had the idea of riding up as close to the volcano as possible. Unfortunately, the clouds came over, and I didn't have a chance to get closer.
Coupled with the fact that the local paper maps only showed a single track and when I got to where the single track location, it was basically a walking track.
Today I talk about my Klim Krew Backpack and what I like (do not like) about this backpack. It is probably one of my favorite pieces of kit I took with me on this journey and had held together extremely well.
The ride, while only around 80 miles (121 kilometers), was a major climb on dirt/rock (ripio) roads through mountain villages. I love riding off the road and any chance I get I go for it. It is important to get as much experience on dirt as you can and would hold me in good stead for the variety of off roads in Patagonia southern America.
I went through some villages like San Vicente Pacaya, Residencial Las Victorias, Liztex, Amatitlán and then back to my hotel in Antigua, Guatemala.
Filadelfia Coffee Resort & Tours
The Hotel is called Filadelfia Coffee Resort & Tours and whilst it is a beautiful location and well staffed, some things make it not so good. The rooms are a little dated and stuffy. The internet speed (if it ever worked) was deplorable. Considering this is a high priced hotel, you would think they would get the Internet and WiFi right.
The grounds are stunning, and the food was very nice (if pricey) and the service was excellent. The reason for the lower star rating? WiFi and the dated fittings in the rooms.
Pacaya, Guatemala
Pacaya is an active complex volcano in Guatemala, which first erupted approximately 23,000 years ago and has erupted at least 23 times since the Spanish invasion of Guatemala. Pacaya rises to an elevation of 2,552 meters (8,373 ft). After being dormant for a century, it erupted violently in 1965 and had been erupting continuously since then. Much of its activity is Strombolian, but occasional Plinian eruptions also occur, sometimes showering the area of the nearby Departments with ash.
Pacaya is a popular tourist attraction. Pacaya lies 30 kilometers (19 miles) southwest of Guatemala City and relatively close to Antigua. The volcano sits inside the Escuintla Department.
So far, the last activity reported has been the eruption that peaked on March 2, 2014, causing ash to rain down in Guatemala City, Antigua, and Escuintla. (From Wikipedia)

GUATEMALA MOTORCYCLE RIDING
#Antigua #Guatemala #LakeAtitlan #motorcycles
When I visited Antigua, Guatemala I rented a motorcycle and a guide for the day to ride to Lake Atitlán. I saw a lot of Guatemala that most people do not see! We rode on the shoulders, passed the crazy chicken bus drivers, hit dirt roads, did a river crossing and saw lots of scenic vistas of the lakes, trees and numerous volcanoes in the area.

Ride Day 27: Flores to Antigua, Guatemala City, Guatemala
Full Post: My trip today to Antigua Guatemala took me on a long but brilliant journey starting in Flores, a region which I had a great time. Today, I speak about my cameras and set up including the Drift Ghost-S and the Olympus Tough TG Tracker, Samsung Gear 360 and of the course my GoPro, coupled with my AirDog Drone. I also talk about Ram Mounts, and how you can use these to set your camera up in sorts of ways on your motorcycle.
I love riding these sweeping roads, especially since these two lane highways go through every village along the way, so much more rewarding driving these roads and going through towns than the usual highways which bypass all of the attractive villages. It gives you a great opportunity to see how the villagers live and get so much more of a feel for the country, its people, culture, and food!
I traveled 321 miles ((521 kilometers) and the days ride took me just over 11 hours, but it was a great day, and I had plenty of stops along the way. I started in Flores and went through little towns like Boca del Monte, Machaquila, Morales, Poptún, Zacapa, Teculután, San Agustín Acasaguastlán, Guastatoya, Guatemala City and onto my final destination in Antigua, Guatemala just outside of Guatemala City, where I would spend a few days, so I could travel up into the many nearby volcanoes.
Antigua, Guatemala
Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It’s renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua’s 200-year reign as Guatemala’s colonial capital. Notable architectural examples include baroque La Merced, a squat, yellow-and-white church. It’s an integral part of the city’s famous Semana Santa, a holy week with parades and rituals. Robbed in Guatemala. Gun and machete.
Robbed at gunpoint on the road between San Pedro La Laguna and Santiago Atitlan GPS -14.629089, -91.268843 . Footage caught on head-cam of my British girlfriend and I (Canadian) being robbed on my motorcycle as we headed back to San Pedro La Laguna from Antigua. April 10, 2014. The guy ahead of us ran out of the bushes and pointed a gun at us, the guy to the right had a machete.
We have uploaded this video clip to serve as a warning to other travelers about taking this road. Robberies happen in Guatemala and this particular spot is apparently notorious... However, we don't want to in any way put people off from visiting San Pedro La Laguna or Guatemala in general as it's a beautiful place with generally warm and kind inhabitants. We have felt safe for the majority of our trip.
The sound is cut part way through at the request of my girlfriend who was understandably distressed.
