ALASKAN CRUISE VACATION: HIKING THE MOUNT ROBERTS TRAIL IN JUNEAU ALASKA!
I decided to take the Mount Roberts hiking trail down from the upper tram station in Juneau, Alaska during our Alaskan cruise vacation. The rest of the family took the Mount Roberts Tramway back down and I met them at the bottom. The funny thing? I nearly beat them with the wait to get back on the tram! :)
Here's a little more about the Mount Roberts Trail -- I especially like the part about where they recommend that guests do not hike the trail I hiked in this video. :)
Take a walk in the wild at the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway.
Bring your camera to capture breathtaking views from the Mountain House platform and other observation points.
Outside the Mountain House at the 1,800-foot level of Mount Roberts, trails begin in a sub-alpine ecosystem before leading into the true alpine another 300 feet up. The main trail takes hikers to open vistas, mountain valleys, snow gullies, rocky ridges and stunning views of mountains in Glacier Bay, British Columbia, the Southeast Alaskan panhandle and Admiralty Island National Monument.
The well-marked trail system has hikes suitable for every ability level, including a trail that is handicap-accessible. Interpretive markers describing many of the flowers, plants, trees, birds and animals are placed along the loop trail for self-guided walks. Visitors can discover Mount Roberts' trails, birds, wildlife and wildflowers on their own or purchase a guided tour with an expert naturalist.
Hiking Trail Attractions
Wildlife
Eagles, ravens, ptarmigan, grouse, marmots, Sitka black tail deer, red squirrels, mountain goats, black bears and porcupine are among the mammals found in the sub-alpine and alpine environments.
Plant Life
The lush rain forest and sub-alpine meadows yield an abundance of wildflowers and colorful ground cover.
Culturally Modified Trees
Trees with totemic carvings depicting Native legends are found along the trails. For more information, see the book Along the Mount Roberts Trail in Juneau, Alaska, available at Raven Eagle Gifts or online at raveneaglegifts.com.
Hiking Trail Notes
The Mount Roberts Tramway recommends that guests hike the trails leading up the mountain rather than trying to hike the steep trail that leads down through the forest to the edge of town, which is a steep, muddy, slippery trail with unmarked hazards.
Alaskan trails can be unforgiving. Always hike with a companion, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return, carry plenty of water, use foot wear that provides good traction and ankle support, dress for weather, take a map or GPS and be aware of changing conditions.

The Mt. Roberts Tramway experience | Juneau, Alaska
According to wikipedia, the Mount Roberts Tramway is an aerial tramway located just south of downtown Juneau in the U.S state of Alaska. In operation since 1996, the tram makes a six-minute ascent of 3,819-foot (1,164 m) Mount Roberts from the cruise ship docks (just feet above sea level) to a height of about 1,800 feet (550 m). A restaurant, theater, nature center and retail shops are located at the top of the tramway, as well as connections to trail leading both up and down the mountain. One trail up the mountain leads to a large cross erected by Roman Catholic Father Brown in the early 1900s.

A photographer from Blue Bay Photography sent us this photograph or picture of a possible bigfoot.
He says he was hiking near Mount Roberts when he saw something moving about 150 yards away.
He doesn't know what it was exactly but thinks it might be a bigfoot or sasquatch.
This is one of the more interesting bigfoot sightings. Hiking in Juneau, Alaska - The Perseverance and Glacier Trails
OK! I apologize for some of the errors made in my narrative (and thanks for pointing them out):
1. There are no wolves or grizzly bears in the Juneau Borough
2. It's pronounced Tun-guss, not Tun-gasss
3. The water run-off at Nugget Falls and the West Glacier trail is not the result of the Mendenhall Glacier
4. The trail leading to Nugget Falls is Nugget Trail not the East Glacier Trail.
pointing out any other errors is appreciated!!
Views here of downtown Juneau, the Perseverance Trail high above downtown Juneau, the East Glacier Trail to Nugget Falls, the West Glacier Trail to the Mendenhall Glacier, and a ferry ride thru the Icy Strait to Angoon on Admiralty Island and finally to the port of Sitka. I would rate this as the best hiking place I've ever visited!

ALASKAN CRUISE VACATION: MOUNT ROBERTS TRAMWAY HIKING LOOP (6.27.11)
This is video of the Mount Roberts Tram hiking loop that we did during our Alaska cruise vacation. This is just a short little 1/2 mile hiking loop trail at the top of the Mount Roberts Tramway in Juneau, Alaska. Not to be confused with the much longer Mount Roberts Trail that goes from the tram station back down to Juneau (that video's coming soon).
This was a great hike for the whole family and you can make it longer by adding on certain out-and-back trails or additional loops. We added on the Father Brown Cross trail that added another 1/2 mile to the hike. Even with a 5 and 7 year old, we did fine and got some of the wiggles out of them in the process. :)
The views were beautiful and ever-changing. It seemed like you went from a lush, tropical forest up to a mountain highland in a very short time. Great views of Juneau, the cruise ships, and the surrounding mountains.

Point Bridget Trail Hike in Alaska

East Glacier Trail - Juneau Alaska
A short snapshot of our hike on the East Glacier Loop in Juneau Alaska with five children ages ten and under. We took this hike on a gorgeous day in late September. Two children got a bit chilly without jackets as we neared the top, but the rest were fine. Layers recommended as always in our climate!
This trail is almost 3 miles, and the elevation gain is over 700ft. The signs say it can be accomplished in 2 hours. It took us 3.5 hours. We stopped twice for snacks, a couple of times for photos and mushroom identification. The kids enjoyed climbing several large boulders, and needed to take the hills fairly slow. We ate lots of snacks along the way.
While this is an active bear trail, we didn't see any on this day, just a couple piles of scat. A handful of groups of hikers and bikers passed us by along the way, several with dogs.
I hope this description and visual guide helps you prepare for your day on this wonderful trail! Subscribe to our channel for more from Juneau.
