Mount Tamalpais R.R.
SUMMARY
This film shows the summit portion of the Mill Valley and Mount Tamalpais Scenic Railway, the Tamalpais Tavern resort, and part of the adjacent east peak of Mount Tamalpais. The film was probably made in February 1898 at mid-morning. Mount Tamalpais is a prominent east-west ridge in southern Marin County, just north of San Francisco. The summit was a popular excursion destination for San Franciscans after the completion of the railroad in 1896. The 2,571-foot east peak commands a sweeping view of the entire San Francisco Bay area and most of central California. Part of the Pacific Ocean is also visible and, on clear days, the distant crest of the Sierra Nevada can be seen. The idea for building the Mill Valley and Mount Tamalpais Scenic Railway was first developed by William Graves, president of the North Pacific Coast Railroad. The Kent and Emmett families backed the idea, with Sidney B. Cushing as president of the corporation. The completed railroad climbed 2,436 feet from the town of Mill Valley, nestled at the south foot of the mountain, to the east summit ridge. Covering 8.25 miles and with 281 curves (including a mid-elevation double bow knot), the line was christened the crookedest railroad in the world. A spur line was built in 1907 from the bow knot to nearby Muir Woods redwood grove, where passenger-braked gravity cars were a popular later feature. Both lines closed in 1929 after a major fire and years of declining patronage. The Tamalpais Tavern resort and hotel - the first of three on the site - was built at the summit station in 1897. The bridge seen in the film linked the Tavern (right) with the dance hall to the west (left). The last building on the site of the Tavern, an army barracks, was removed in 1950. A typical Saturday excursion from San Francisco at the turn of the century included a ferry ride to Sausalito on the Marin shore and a train ride to Mill Valley. There passengers switched to the Tamalpais train, had lunch at the Tavern, and hiked to the summit of the east peak. The day ended with the return to San Francisco by trains and ferry. Today the old Tavern site is a picnic area, a parking lot and road occupy the dance hall and railroad station sites, and the old railroad grade is a fire break road and hiking trail. The summit ridge of Mount Tamalpais is within the boundaries of Mt. Tamalpais State Park (1948) but most of the mountain is Marin Municipal Water District land. A disused fire lookout occupies the east summit.

Muir Woods National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service in Marin County, California, 12 miles north of San Francisco and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Monument is an old-growth coastal redwood forest. Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the forest is regularly shrouded in coastal fogs, contributing to a wet environment that encourages vigorous plant growth.
Mount Tamalpais State Park is a California state park, located in Marin County, California. The primary feature of the park is the 2,571 foot Mount Tamalpais. The park contains mostly redwood and oak forests. The mountain itself covers around 25,000 acres. From the peak of the mountain, visitors can see up to 25 miles, in a view that encompasses San Francisco, most of the North and East Bay, and the Farallon Islands. Occasionally, the Sierra Nevadas are visible, 125 miles away.

mount tamalpais, california | TRIP DAYS 18 & 19
me and hannah enjoy a day by the wharf, chinatown, walk across the golden gate then i head to mount tam with the cousins. what a time to be alive
California 5 Year Anniversary Trip
For our five year anniversary we flew into Reno, Nevada, and drove to Lake Tahoe. We spent 4 days there hiking around and eating REALLY good food, and then drove through Sonoma Valley all the way to the coastline of California. We spent 3 days driving up and down California around San Francisco exploring amazing scenery.
Here are all the places we hiked or visited!
Lake Tahoe Beaches:
Sand Harbor - where you can see someone jump off the rocks and where all the kayaks were.
Secret Harbor - the first beach area we walked down to.
Secret Cove - the part of the video where we kissed during sunset. It's a nude beach, watch out!
Bonsai Rock - the big rock with the bonsai ;)
Sugar Pine Point State Park - the SUPER blue lake area with a dock and the sign that says cold water!
Lake Tahoe Hikes:
Eagle Lake - the first hike it shows. The lake with the ducks swimming around. Super easy hike!
Horsetail Falls Trail - this was the long hike to those huge falls. it's super intense! Especially if you try to climb the waterfall like we did!
Winnemucca Lake Trail - the super windy hike at the end of the first song. This was our longest hike, but it was really easy and really pretty!
California Coast Places:
Muir Beach Overlook - at sunset with a walkway overlooking the cliff of the coastline.
Muir Woods - the one walkway through the redwoods.
Bolinas Fairfax Ridge Road - This is the dreamy rolling hills at the end of the video at the top of Mt. Tamalpais State Park
Highway 1 - random places we stopped on the coast south of San Francisco
Marshalls Beach - this is the beach that looks at the Golden Gate Bridge! All the ending sunset beach shots were here. (another nude beach of course)
California Restaurants:
Tacolicious - the really fancy pink drink Bethany got! GO HERE! The best place I've eat'n in San Fran!
Bi-Rite Creamery - not in the video, but GO HERE! The best ice cream I've ever had. They had creme brulee ice cream!
Dandelion Chocolate - where the chocolate chip cookie was from. Great chocolate milkshakes too!
Tartine Bakery & Cafe - it only showed Bethany in line at the place, but this is always a must go to.
Super Duper Burger - this was actually in Mill Valley, but I loved this place. It was like a home grown In-And-Out.
Lake Tahoe Restaurants:
Macduffs Pub - not in the video, but this is seriously one of the best places ever. GET THE MAC & CHEESE! DO IT!
The Red Hut Cafe - also not in the video, but amazing waffles! Get all the fruit and whip cream on it! Leslie Knope style!
Burger Lounge - this is where that chili cheese dog was from. The burgers are really good here too!
Cabin We Stayed At In Lake Tahoe - you should totally stay here. It was so perfect.
