Mount Tauhara Track, Taupo :: Long White Gypsy
Nothing is better than a mountain climb to get you into the spirit of hiking!!!
Mount Tauhara is located on the shores of the beautiful Lake Taupo (the southern hemisphere's largest freshwater lake) in the Central North Island of New Zealand. For those experienced in hiking, this is a short jaunt which gets the quads and glutes working, but for those who don't yet have their trail legs it can be a killer.
Although the ascent is only 2.8km, it's 1hr15min of climb ... ALL THE WAY. It definitely gets the heart pumping and the lungs working!
The mountain itself is 1,088m above sea level, and on a clear day you get panoramic views of the central north island include Mounts Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngaruahoe in the Tongariro National Park to the south.
The first section of the track traverses active grazing land, so don't be surprised if you encounter some four-legged bovine friends on the way. Once onto the track proper, the biggest threat are the tree roots and rocks that make the climb more technical.
A litre or so of water for the track will see you right, but there is a waterfall and creek about 15mins from the summit if you need to top up (it is always recommended to filter your water).
As you approach the summit, there are a number of different routes to take. Don't despair - almost all lead to the summit in some manner. Upon arrival at the trig point, make sure to take the ridge walk to the rocks (not signposted - but head into the bushes in the direction of the lake) - the views from here are even more stunning, and make for some great social media profile pics!
If you're in Taupo, make sure to check it out. Head out of Taupo on State Highway 5 (towards Napier) and take the Mountain Road turnoff just shy of 1km after the Mitre 10 roundabout.

Mt. TAUHARA / TAUPO / NEW ZEALAND VLOG #21
We originally wanted to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (we eventually did, but not on the day that we planned to go), but the weather wasn't very good so, instead, we decided to do the Mt Tauhara hike. I was so happy that we did the track. It was muddy when we went to do it but I was so fulfilled when we reached the summit because we were literally on top of the clouds and we almost gave up several times as the track was muddy and it was raining at times, but we were able to reach the summit. And it was one of the best feelings ever! Mt Tauhara is 1008 meters above sea level and took us more than 2 hours just to climb the summit.

Free Things to do in Taupo: Conquering Mount Tauhara
New Zealand isn't the cheapest place for activities. Things like Sky Diving, Bungee and Para-Sailing cost money.
But being backpackers, we had to look for alternatives to enjoy the island as it is.
10 mins away from Town by car found us hiking Mount Tauhara. Mount Tauhara, a 65,000 year old mountain that will take you about 2 hours to reach to the top.
It's a medium hike and a loop system with an elevation of 1,088m!
While walking up the mountain, you will encounter a creek where you can have a refreshing cool drink of spring water!
If you're looking for free activities to do, Mount Tauhara is something that you can try for sure!

What To Do In Taupo - Mount Tauhara
Taupo is located in the central North Island of New Zealand and one of the common questions I get asked is, What to do in Taupo?
There are so many things to do in Taupo that it is a little overwhelming for a first time visitor. Mount Tauhara is the perfect free activity for people who like to get out and explore a little bit of nature.

New Zealand - Rotorua Luge and Taupo Mt. Tauhara
Another week finished in New Zealand. This weekend we rented a cabin between Rotorua and Taupo. On Saturday we went to Rotorua and used the gondola to go onto the inactive volcano and race down the mountain on the luges. We went to Taupo and climbed Mt. Tauhara for the afternoon. On Sunday, we saw Huka Falls and Craters of the Moon again and headed to a geothermally heated stream which fed into the refreshing water of the Waikato River.
