Mount Tavurvur in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea
Tavurvur is an active stratovolcano near Rabaul, on the island of New Britain, in Papua New Guinea. It is a sub-vent of the Rabaul caldera and lies on the eastern rim of the larger feature. An eruption of the volcano largely destroyed the nearby town of Rabaul in 1994.
Rabaul volcano is one of the most active and most dangerous volcanoes in Papua New Guinea.
Rabaul exploded violently in 1994 and devastated the lively city of Rabaul. Since then, the young cone Tavurvur located inside the caldera has been the site of near persistent activity in form of strombolian to vulcanian ash eruptions.
The caldera has an elliptical form (14 x 9 km) and is surrounded by a steep volcanic ridge several hundred meters high.
Mount Tavurvur is the most active volcano in Rabaul caldera, and erupted most recently on 12 September 2014.
The correct pronunciation of the volcano's name is tah-VOOR-voor, according to the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory.

Rabaul deserves it's own video because it is such an incredible place to visit. The highlight of Rabaul is Mt Tavurvur volcano which is still active. Sometimes it's about the journey not the destination, but in this case it's all about both!

Visit Rabaul, Papua New Guinea: A Rabaul Highlights Tour
A busy morning in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea with much to see. I had to divide Rabaul into three videos of which this is the first.
Why do the Rabaul people refer to whites as dim-dim? Has to do with the first missionaries - at least this is what I was told. The natives saw whites blowing their nose into a square of tissue and keeping it. What? Keep body fluids? I agree -- dim-dim --

Rabaul Town Pre Eruption
Rabaul town was considered the most beautiful town in Papua New Guinea and also the 'Pearl of the South Pacific' until 1994 when it was destroyed by the twin volcanic eruptions of Mt. Tavurvur and Vulcan. Even though Rabaul town is gone, it will always be in the heart of people who had lived there. It is slowly rising up from the ashes and is still maintaining its natural beauty.
The pictures in this short video is taken from John B. Dikaung's Photo Album and the Facebook group 'Swit Rabaul'.
