Climbing Mt. Warning!
Join us on our 6th Aussie camping adventure as we set up camp at the base of Mt. Warning, New South Wales! We tackle the brutal and steep 4.4km trail up to the summit of Mt. Warning, where we are rewarded by amazing views of the mountain range! We complete the 8.8km return journey by running back down, and cooling off in the creek. We finish off the adventure with a special gathering with indigenous Australians (or 'originies' as we learnt they prefer to be named), where we see them dot paint and play the didgeridoo. Why Hiking Mt Lindesay Is NOT recommended.... Scenic Rim - QLD/NSW
Monday 12th August 2019 - Wikilocs here:
Hiking up Mt Lindesay, Scenic Rim on the QLD/NSW border. Don't get too excited as I didn't reach the summit. I'm only a simpleton hiker after all!
My access to the mountain was via the border fencing which veered around to the south. It is like a 40 degree incline up the slopes to the base of the clouds and you will be climbing up on all fours via ground roots and whatever you can grab.
Once you come to the southern side of the first tier, directly in front of you is the Gully route to access this Rock. Once you start ascending, there is a climbing rope... but this still is a treacherous route up unless you are an experienced climber with a head for heights. I probably got up about 60m (then realised I wasn't Bert Salmon who could scale this rock like a mountain goat) and that I still wanted to go home alive and live a little bit longer. So, down I went.
At the base again of tier 1, to the east there is a nice little cave... undoubtedly sheltering the reported resident Yowie. I continued eastward for a few hundred metres to find there was no real route to ascend the mountain, and the bush was thick and way too overgrown. I did give it a shot though.
I decided to backtrack and went past the Gully rope access point of tier 1 and clambered on the western side. Very thick growth and extremely rough terrain, with serious bush bashing through scrub. Sheer vertical rock wall of tier 1, nil access points seen.
Got to the Western ridge line and then descended down via extremely rough foliage and terrain until circuited back close to the start point. Let me stress that this is dense and rough country here with numerous Lantana and Gympie Gympie plants... one slide of its leaves over your exposed skin, and it will sting and burn for the rest of your day... Don't ask me how I know. Nil snakes seen today most likely due to being winter.
Might try again some time from the northern grassy paddocks & slopes to find Vidler's Grave. I have heard that is an easier and faster route to the north-eastern cliff faces.
Bummed I wasn't able to summit this mountain from my route, and I have great respect for those that have. Particularly the first females who summitted this 1177m high mountain, Jean Easton and Nora Dimes, who made the ascent with Bert Salmon in March 1931. If you have ever seen photos of their climb, it appears they had minimal gear. Simply amazing especially considering it was a wet day when they did it.
Final words to anyone considering climbing up this Rock, unless you are an experienced climber.... this is NOT a mountain for hiking such as the easy Mt Barney. Maybe I'm a big namby-pamby (that's a fact, actually) who needs to take up rock-climbing and abseiling but that is my two-cents worth at this stage. Great respect to Mt Lindesay and to the elusive Yowie that lives in these parts who is rumored to scale this rock daily with nil gear.

Mt Warning is a 8.8 km, five hour return walk through the rainforest, culminates in breathtaking 360 degree views around the ancient caldera with coastal views stretching from The Gold Coast to Byron Bay. Winding upwards from the Breakfast Creek parking area the Mount Warning summit track passes through a variety of vegetation communities. Subtropical and temperate rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest and heath shrubland are all encountered on your journey. The climb ends with a challenging rock scramble before reaching the summit, the perfect place to picnic before heading back down again.

Top of Wollumbin (Mt Warning), North to Gold Coast

After a 3 hour hike over 5km through virgin sub-tropical rain forest, I reached the summit of Wollumbin, 5th in a crew of seven. This view is North and North East of Mt Warning National Park to Tyalgum, Uki, Murwillumbah, Tweed Coast and the Cold Coast to Surfers Paradise. Fortunately the weather remained clear well into the afternoon which allowed me to capture some stunning photos and this little video. The decent was a race against the sunset since it gets dark very fast in the rainforest foothills. Since the only light anyone had was on our phones, and since we had all had well enough of the mountain, we hotfooted it down the way we came and completed the 10km round trip by taking probably an hour less to get back down. I had also improved my position and arrived in the car-park 4th. After marching a further 150m or so to my car I peeled my shoes and socks from my burning feet and drove back up to await my passengers emergence from the trail. It wasn't long and we were hauling it back to town for some good old KFC burgers...Next time I will definitely be taking some food. The fruit for breakfast and the two miniature milky-way bars i had taken on the climb, resolved to be quite insufficient indeed. It took three days for my knee bones to stop hurting and my gluteus maximus ached for four. But it was worth it! What is life but to do?
Mount Warning Climb
The climb is over 4 hours and if you add a couple of breaks and 30 minutes recovery time at the summit you can see it is a full day's activity and that doesn't include travelling to the location. The climb is best started in the morning the earlier the better while the air is cool and fresh. Don't start the climb in the afternoon, this will not allow enough time to get down before dark, there are warning signs outlining the outcome of such a decision.
