African American Life in Washington, DC, Before Emancipation
African American Life in Washington, DC, Before Emancipation
As Washington became the focus of abolitionism before the Civil War, antislavery activists argued that the sight of slavery and slave dealers in the nation’s capital disgraced the nation and its ideals. A panel will explore life before the 1862 Compensated Emancipation Act and discuss the “Slavery and Freedom” exhibit at the Smithsonian’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Moderated by John W. Franklin of the NMAAHC, panelists include Mark Auslander, Central Washington University; Maurice Jackson, Georgetown University; and NMAAHC curators Nancy Bercaw and Mary Elliott. Presented in partnership with NMAAHC, the DC Commission of African American Affairs, and the DC Commission on Emancipation.

Finance and Insurance is heavy on capital investment, having to replace and upgrade equipment and construct and replace buildings on an annual basis. The spending by this sector is similar to capital investment spending in the IT and Healthcare Sectors. In 2014 the industry made fixed asset investment of $178.4 billion, a 29.84% increase from 2008 and an 8.32% increase from 2013. As the chart below shows, Finance and Insurance fixed asset investment is steady and consistent on a year-to-year basis. Media Credits Column Better Qualified has helped thousands build, manage, and monitor their credit since 2006. Our staff of credit experts works diligently to attack derogatory accounts, while advising you towards building a better credit score. Better Qualified CEO Paul Oster has been featured on numerous radio and TV broadcasts including CBS, NBC, News 12 NJ, and Pix 11. Paul is also a regular guest on Fox Business News and is often referred to as the 'Nation’s Credit Repairman'. Better Qualified works closely with collections attorneys to comb through all of your 3rd party collections in search of violations. When an account is sold to a 3rd party, often times the collection company will violate set regulations. This leaves the consumer paying more than they have to or paying for something that isn’t theirs. Many people who have bad credit often find themselves in difficult situations financially. But what exactly does it mean to have 'bad credit,' 'blemished credit,' or 'less-than-perfect credit?' Having a poor credit score can seriously affect you financially. One thing that can happen is that you could be denied credit. A low credit score indicates to lenders that you are a high-risk borrower and they may not be willing to lend you money. Another thing that can happen is that you aren't denied credit, but it may be more expensive for you to get a credit. You may have to pay more in fees or with a higher interest rate which will increase your monthly payment. Installment credit is used for a specific purpose, for a defined amount and for a specific period. Payments are usually the same amount each month. Examples of purchases made on installment credit include large appliances, automobiles and furniture. These kinds of loans usually offer lower interest rates than revolving credit. For example, a car company holds a lien on the car until the car loan is repaid. The total amount of the principal and interest is repaid within a predefined period. If the customer defaults on the loan payments, the company can repossess the car and charge penalties. Better Qualified has developed a proven credit management program that will help you manage your credit and save money. Columbia, located in northern mid-Missouri, is 120 miles (190 km) away from both St. Louis and Kansas City, and 29 miles (47 km) north of the state capital Jefferson City. The city is near the Missouri River between the Ozark Plateau and the Northern Plains. Trees are mainly oak, maple, and hickory; common understory trees include eastern redbud, serviceberry, and flowering dogwood. Riparian areas are forested with mainly American sycamore. Much of the residential area of the city is planted with large native shade trees. In Autumn, the changing color of the trees is notable. Most species here are typical of the Eastern Woodland.

Mayor Bowser Highlights Reforms at DC Fire & Emergency Medical Services, 2/22/17
Mayor Muriel Bowser joins Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) Chief Gregory Dean to highlight the significant improvements made at FEMS in just two years.
Under the Bowser Administration, the Department has made a number of reforms to ensure the city is delivering the most immediate, responsible, and appropriate level of care to all residents and visitors who call 911 seeking medical assistance.
“Over the past two years, I have remained committed to fulfilling my promise to fix our Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, and we will keep the improvements going – the people of DC deserve nothing less,” said Mayor Bowser. “Through filling vacancies, improving our fleet, and making key improvements to 911 and 311 operations, we have created an emergency response system that both residents and first responders can rely on and trust. And with over 17,000 people trained in hands-only CPR through our Hands On Hearts program, we have more Washingtonians ready to help their neighbors in the event of a life-threatening cardiac emergency.”
Since 2015, the Bowser Administration has filled critical vacancies, hiring an additional 45 firefighter paramedics and 48 firefighter EMTs as well as accepting 36 cadets into the Fire Cadet Program. In addition, the Administration has dramatically improved DC’s previously depleted apparatus fleet, putting 34 new or refurbished ambulances and 12 new or refurbished ladder trucks and engines on the street.
“Members of the DC Fire and EMS Department are thankful to Mayor Bowser for her staunch support of FEMS,” said FEMS Chief Dean. “Since Mayor Bowser took office, the Department has been able FEMS has been able to handle an increase in 911 calls with improved unit availability and lower response times. FEMS still has much work to do, but with the Mayor’s fearless support, the Department is now better positioned to deliver excellent medicine and assistance to anyone who calls 911 for our help.”
At the event, Mayor Bowser also announced that in the coming weeks she will introduce the Affordable Emergency Transportation and Pre-Hospital Medical Services Amendment Act of 2017, legislation that will help close gaps in insurance coverage and ensure that more District residents have access to emergency medical care by requiring insurance companies to cover the costs associated with emergency ambulance and pre-hospital medical services.
The Mayor also released the final Integrated Healthcare Collaborative (I.H.C.) report. The I.H.C. is an initiative led by FEMS Interim Medical Director Dr. Robert Holman that seeks to provide alternative and medically responsible care for DC’s many noncritical 911 callers. The goal of the I.H.C. is to connect patients with primary care providers who are better positioned to treat and care for patients’ long-term medical needs.

Black Georgetown Remembered, 25th Anniversary
On Februrary 24, 2016 the University community gathered in Gaston Hall to commemorate Black Georgetown Remembered, which chronicles and celebrates the rich but little-known history of the Georgetown black community from the colonial period to the present.

This event celebrated the beautiful commemorative 25th anniversary edition of Black Georgetown Remembered, which was first published in 1991, with a new introduction by Kathleen Menzie Lesko and a foreword by Maurice Jackson.
Moderator: Maurice Jackson (Georgetown University)
Panelists: Valerie Babb (University of Georgia), Kathleen Menzie Lesko (Huntington Library), Vernon H. Ricks, Jr (Mount Zion United Methodist Church), Monica Roaché (Georgetown’s Advisory Neighborhood Commission), and Neville Waters, III (Fifth Generation Georgetowner).
