We visited Georgia in June 2017. In this video we describe a part of our journey - a trip from Tbilisi to Kazbegi along the Georgian Military Road, how it is better to get to Kazbegi, where to stop along the way and what to do in the mountains. We went to Kazbegi with a guide by car, so we had a great opportunity to stop in the interesting and beautiful places of the Georgian Military Road. Mtskheta and Jvari, Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri fortress, Gudauri, the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, Sno village - we turned the trip from Tbilisi to Kazbegi into an adventure. After that we spent 3 more days in the mountains of Kazbegi, walked up to the Trinity Church in Gergeti and even higher, visited the Dariali Gorge and Gveleti waterfall, and when the weather turned bad, we spent all the time in hotel, but it did not upset us at all, because the view of the mountains from the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi is fascinating in any weather!

Kazbek (5 047 m) expedition - Caucasus Georgia climbing [Drone + GoPro]
Climbing Kazbek 5 047 m - the 3rd highest peak in Georgia and 6th highest peak in Caucasus mountains.
Day 1 - Starting from village Stepantsminda (1 740 m) and camping near Gergeti Trinity Church (2 170 m)
Day 2 - From Gergeti Trinity Church through Gergeti glacier to the Base camp - Meteostation Betlemi hut (3 653 m)
Day 3 - Rest day, aclimatization
Day 4 - Summit Day, starting 2:00 AM from base camp, ascent of Kazbek summit (5 047 m) at 10:00 AM, then descent back to the base camp
Day 5 - Small workout in the morning :) Then descent down to Stepantsminda

Mount Kazbek (Georgian: მყინვარწვერი), is a dormant stratovolcano and one of the major mountains of the Caucasus located on the border of Georgia's Kazbegi District and Russia's Republic of North Ossetia–Alania.
It is the third-highest peak in Georgia (after Mount Shkhara and Janga) and the seventh-highest summit in the Caucasus Mountains. Kazbek is also the second-highest volcanic summit in the Caucasus, after Mount Elbrus. The summit lies directly to the west of the town of Stepantsminda and is the most prominent geographic feature of the area. Mount Kazbek is the highest peak of Eastern Georgia. The name in Georgian, Mkinvartsveri, translates to Glacier Peak or Freezing Cold Peak. The Vainakh name Bashlam translates as Molten Mount.
Caucasus Mountains:
The Caucasus Mountains are a mountain system in Eurasia between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea in the Caucasus region.
The Caucasus Mountains include the Greater Caucasus in the north and Lesser Caucasus in the south. The Greater Caucasus runs west-northwest to east-southeast, from the Caucasian Natural Reserve in the vicinity of Sochi on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea nearly to Baku on the Caspian Sea. The Lesser Caucasus runs parallel to the Greater about 100 km (62 mi) south. The Greater and Lesser Caucasus ranges are connected by the Likhi Range, and to the west and east of the Likhi Range lie the Colchis Plain and the Kur-Araz Lowland. The Meskheti Range is a part of the Lesser Caucasus system. In the southeast the Aras River separates the Lesser Caucasus from the Talysh Mountains which straddle the border of southeastern Azerbaijan and Iran. The Lesser Caucasus and the Armenian Highland constitute the Transcaucasian Highland, which at their western end converge with the highland plateau of Eastern Anatolia in the far north east of Turkey. The highest peak in the Caucasus range is Mount Elbrus in the Greater Caucasus, which rises to a height of 5,642 metres (18,510 ft) above sea level. Mountains near Sochi hosted part of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The Javakheti Volcanic Plateau in Georgia and the surrounding volcanic ranges which extend well into central Armenia are some of the youngest features of the region. Only recently was the Caucasus a scene for intense volcanic activity: the Armenian highland was flooded by calc-alkaline basalts and andesites in the Pliocene and the highest summits of the Caucasus, the Elbrus, and the Kazbek, formed as Pleistocene-Pliocene volcanoes. The Kazbek is no longer active, but the Elbrus erupted in postglacial times and fumarole activity is registered near its summit. Contemporary seismic activity is a prominent feature of the region, reflecting active faulting and crustal shortening. Clusters of seismicity occur in Dagestan and in northern Armenia. Many devastating earthquakes have been documented in historical times, including the Spitak earthquake in December 1988 which destroyed the Gyumri-Vanadzor region of Armenia.
Europe's highest mountain is Mount Elbrus 5,642 m (18,510 ft) in the Caucasus Mountains. Elbrus is 832 m (2,730 ft) higher than Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps at 4,810 m (15,780 ft). The Caucasus Mountains are defined as the continental divide between Asia and Europe for the region between the Black and Caspian Seas.
The table below lists some of the highest peaks of the Caucasus. With the exception of Shkhara, the heights are taken from Soviet 1:50,000 mapping. There are higher and more prominent, but nameless, peaks than some of the peaks included below.Wikipedia

What happens when four like-minded adventurers head into one of the world’s wildest mountain ranges with nothing but their mountain bikes and enough food to survive for 10 days?
The answer? What doesn’t happen? Terrifying lightning storms. Raging-river crossings. Snow-covered glacial pass traverses. Mind-melting descents. Constant fights with vicious dogs. Tense encounters with over-zealous border-patrol guards.
All of the above were just another day following “The Trail to Kazbegi,” a self-supported mountain-bike mission through the highest reaches of the Caucasus Mountains in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Our four-man team—adventure filmmaker Joey Schusler, Bike magazine editor Brice Minnigh, photographer Ross Measures and mountain man Sam Seward—spent half of June 2015 exploring the crown jewels of the Georgian High Caucasus on a feature assignment for Bike.
Along the way our crew overcame countless obstacles and experienced some of the most spectacular scenery and trails they had ever encountered. They also were treated to the unparalleled hospitality of the Georgian people and the benign indifference of the elements on their quest to reach the magnificent Mount Kazbek. In the process, they cemented lasting friendships and proved, yet again, that life is simply better in the mountains.

Kazbek Expedition in Georgia 2017 - Cinematic HD
Kazbek expedition took place in June 2017. As the preparation to higher attitude we started with climb to Ararat mountain in Armenia which is around 4000m, that gave us acclimatization for Kazbek.
Kazbek mountain took 3 days:
1st Day - around 10 hours trekking to 1st camp at altitude of 3670m Bethlemi Hut. There are beds available at the hut and a rudimentary kitchen, running water available from melting snow from top of mountains and you should bring all your food with you. There are also numerous camping spots around the hut which you can use for free. And this is what we did. During night we experienced heave storm that finished aroun 8am and none of the groups were planning to leave the camp that day, many of them wating already for almost a week in the camp for clean weather conditions. We had support of 2 Polish Rescue team that were residing there for 3 weeks, we exchange frequency of walkie talkies and received information that Polish consult is with helicopter in Kazbegi, therefore in most critical situation they could support us.
2nd Day - basing on situation we decided to take a trek up to plateau on altitude around 4200m and turn back if the weather would get worse. Fortunately sky cleared down and we were able to prepare camping place, melt snow for water and get ready for reaching pick trek on day 3.
3rd Day - 3AM wake up - quick food to have energy, leaving camp behind and taking only most necessary things with us to the top. We left the camp as it was in case we had to turn around cause of bad weather, fortunately it was sunny day without big wind. Trek has to start early as at around 10am melting snow and ice surface on mountain will decrease safety on the route making it more slippery. We arrived to last part of the mountain around 7am, having in front of us 55 degrees ascent of icy route going for few hundred meters. Being sure we place our crampons and hicks in the ice climb seems to be safe but exciting. Around 8am our team of 5 people achieve the top enjoying spectacular view until we got cold and started to head down. After few hours we arrived to our camp spot at plateau, packed everything and head down to bottom of mountain. We finished our day at the bottom around 5PM meaning around 13-14 hours of trek on last day. Definitely exhausting but possible.
Altogether climb took us 3 days, but please have in mind we were acclimatized to altitude 4000m already, in normal way we would advise to take at least 4 to 5 days for this climb. After Kazbek mountain we head climb straight after Elbrus in Russia.
