Gobustan Mud Volcanoes, Azerbaijan
Gobustan offers a high concentration of mud volcanoes, which are natural-occurring formations of slurries, water, and gas, caused by imbalance of subterranean pressures. Mud volcanoes are not true volcanoes as they do not exude magma, but rather, mud slurry material.
Aside from the mud volcanoes, Gobustan National Park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ancient rock engravings.

Gobustan & Mud Volcanoes ???????? | Day trip from Baku
During my visit to the capital of Azerbaijan, I also took a day trip around Absheron peninsula to some of the nearby attractions.
I decided to book an organized group tour, as public transport outside of Baku appears to be rather inconvenient. Be advised that prices and packages may vary substantially.
I ended up paying 50 manat, around 25 euros, but I was quoted up to 130 manat, so shop around when you are in town!
The first stop was Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient petroglyphs, or rock carvings, which depict animals, humans, chasing scenes, ritual dances and other things. Most of the rock carvings are estimated to be 5,000-20,000 years old. There is also a museum showcasing the history of the region and some exhibits.
My next stop took me to the nearby mud volcanoes, which are located on a nearby hill which can only be accessed by 4x4 vehicles. The 15 minute ride to the top was quite a bumpy experience.
Azerbaijan is home to around 300 of the world's estimated 700 mud volcanoes. They are not actual volcanoes, as there is no lava involved, but rather formed by the eruption of mud from deep below the Earth's surface.
Azerbaijan is often called The Land of Fire because of its seemingly endless reserve of natural gas. In some places, there are flames that keep on burning for decades or even longer.
One of those places is the Ateshgah Fire Temple, just east of Baku. For many centuries, this site was the holy place for Zoroastrians, a fire worshipping religion and also for Hindus.
The present structure dates from the 17th century and was built around a flame that was thought to be eternal, but went out in the mid-19th-century. At that time, pilgrims interpreted this as punishment by the gods so the site was abandoned and neglected. Some decades ago, the temple was renovated and turned into a museum for tourists, including an artificial flame.
However, there is one place outside of Baku where you can still see a natural gas fire in action. Yanar dag, meaning Burning Mountain, has been on fire since the 1950s and the flame never went out.
Coming back to Baku in the late afternoon, I had the chance to take pictures of the Heydar Aliyev Center, an arts museum and conference center designed by Zaha Hadid. Its distinctive architecture made this building the symbol of modern Baku.
On the whole, this was perhaps not the most spectacular day trip I've ever made, but it was still interesting to spend some hours outside of Baku and broaden my understanding of the history and culture of Azerbaijan.

Gobustan Mud Volcanos, Azerbaijan
Over a thousand mud volcanoes are known to exist in the world, and some 400 of those are in the coastal area of Azerbaijan.
While mud volcanoes (also known as “sedimentary volcanoes”) never grow to the size of a normal volcano, topping out at around 10 km in diameter and 700 meters in height, (among the largest mud volcanoes in the world are Boyuk Khanizadagh and Turaghai, both in Azerbaijan) they do occasionally get the chance to show off, as happened in 2001.
Every 20 years or so, one of these mud/gas volcanoes will ignite deep below the surface and create a massive explosion. While generally not dangerous to people, as they are far outside of most city centers, it is believed that six shepherds and over 2,000 sheep were killed by a mud volcano in Bozdagh, Azerbaijan.
There is a silver lining to having a country covered in mud volcanoes. Mud volcanoes are closely associated with hydrocarbon and petrochemical stores underground, hence the gas trying to escape to the surface. A few of these gas leaks are constantly on fire, shooting small perpetual flames into the air and some believe that these perpetual flames are strongly connected to the appearance of the Zoroastrian religion in Azerbaijan some 2,000 years ago.
Local people call them “yanardagh” (burning mountain), “pilpila” (terrace), “gaynacha” (boiling water) and “bozdag” (grey mountain) alongside its geographical name – mud volcanoes.

Mud Volcano in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan keeps the first place in the world for the number of mud volcanoes. There are 800 mud volcanoes on the Earth and 400 of them are in the Southern Caspian region. About 300 mud volcanoes are to be found in Azerbaijan – at the shore, in the sea and on islands. There are all types of mud volcanoes – both active and dormant. Volcanoes can be high and low, gryphons and buried ones, submarine and subterranean. Each of them has its own character and chemical composition. As the most of remarkable sites of Azerbaijan the 23 of the most interesting volcanoes got the status of a national park and are protected by the state.
Mud volcanoes are definite accompaniments of oil and gas fields confirming the availability of the great natural resources in Azerbaijan.
The mud volcanoes can supply raw materials for chemical and building industries as well as for pharmacology. The mud and clay of these volcanoes alongside with the volcanic waters can treat many diseases. These substances consist of many chemical elements. The mud volcanoes are a natural lab and storehouse for the scientists. The mud volcanoes are also interesting for the tourists. The strange landscape reminds the youth of our planet or the views of the Moon but unlike the old Moon’s dead surface the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are still alive.
From Baku the most accessible group of active mud volcanoes is right beside the Baku-Shamakha road – within five minutes’ walk or a one-minute ride off the main road. The most famous is formally called Buraniz Julgya located at km 41. In this area one can see another group of less impressive cones situated near the village of Pirekeshkyul some 500 m south of the main road, turning 400m east of km 38.
The most interesting and tourist-visited group of active volcanoes located along the Baku-Alat road, about 10 km south of Gobustan as well as volcanoes that one can see not far from Dashgil area.

Azerbaijan, Gobustan Mud Volcanos - To the Caspian Sea ep 23-Travel vlog calatorii tourism video
Azerbaijan styles itself as the land of fire. It’s a resource rich country, where oil literally seeps out of the ground and occasionally just doesn’t stop burning. A lesser known side effect of the huge stores of natural resources, has been the strange occurrence of rare mud volcanoes.
I was visiting Gobustan National Park not far from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, and a place where the mud volcanoes can be walked right up to and where the brave can even bathe in them.

Azerbaijan is in the first place in the world for the amount of mud volcanoes. Mud volcanoes broadly spread in Azerbaijan. There are about 350 of 800 volcanoes of the world in Azerbaijani Republic. Local people call them “yanardagh” (burning mountain), “pilpila” (terrace), “gaynacha” (boiling water) and “bozdag” (grey mountain) alongside its geographical name mud volcanoes. Underground and submarine mud volcanoes also famed in Azerbaijan. There are more than 140 submarine volcanoes in the Caspian Sea. Eight islands in the Baku Archipelago are mud volcanoes by origination. The other kind of mud volcanoes is found out in wells. Their activity can be observed among strata of various ages. According to the information, mud volcanoes initially began their activity in the territory of Azerbaijan 25 million years ago. About 200 eruptions occurred in 50 volcanoes in the territory of Azerbaijani Republic since 1810. Eruption of mud volcanoes is accompanied by strong explosions and underground rumble. Gasses come out from the deepest layers of the earth and immediately ignite. A height of a flame over volcano reaches 1000 meters (Garasu volcano). Toragay volcano erupted 6 times from 1841 to 1950. Mud volcanoes associated with oilfields by origination. Rich oil and gas fields were found out in the territories of mud volcanoes (Lokbatan, Garadgh, Neft Dashlari, Mishovdagh and others). In addition, lava, mud and liquid erupted by mud volcanoes are used as raw materials in chemical and construction industries and also in pharmacology. Geologists of NASA studying Mars planet, concluded that mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are similar to uplands of the planet for their structure. On September 5, 2004 the greatest mud volcano in the territory of Azerbaijan was added into the Guinness World Records.
