Gobustan & Mud Volcanoes
During my visit to the capital of Azerbaijan, I also took a day trip around Absheron peninsula to some of the nearby attractions.
I decided to book an organized group tour, as public transport outside of Baku appears to be rather inconvenient. Be advised that prices and packages may vary substantially.
I ended up paying 50 manat, around 25 euros, but I was quoted up to 130 manat, so shop around when you are in town!
The first stop was Gobustan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient petroglyphs, or rock carvings, which depict animals, humans, chasing scenes, ritual dances and other things. Most of the rock carvings are estimated to be 5,000-20,000 years old. There is also a museum showcasing the history of the region and some exhibits.
My next stop took me to the nearby mud volcanoes, which are located on a nearby hill which can only be accessed by 4x4 vehicles. The 15 minute ride to the top was quite a bumpy experience.
Azerbaijan is home to around 300 of the world's estimated 700 mud volcanoes. They are not actual volcanoes, as there is no lava involved, but rather formed by the eruption of mud from deep below the Earth's surface.
Azerbaijan is often called The Land of Fire because of its seemingly endless reserve of natural gas. In some places, there are flames that keep on burning for decades or even longer.
One of those places is the Ateshgah Fire Temple, just east of Baku. For many centuries, this site was the holy place for Zoroastrians, a fire worshipping religion and also for Hindus.
The present structure dates from the 17th century and was built around a flame that was thought to be eternal, but went out in the mid-19th-century. At that time, pilgrims interpreted this as punishment by the gods so the site was abandoned and neglected. Some decades ago, the temple was renovated and turned into a museum for tourists, including an artificial flame.
However, there is one place outside of Baku where you can still see a natural gas fire in action. Yanar dag, meaning Burning Mountain, has been on fire since the 1950s and the flame never went out.
Coming back to Baku in the late afternoon, I had the chance to take pictures of the Heydar Aliyev Center, an arts museum and conference center designed by Zaha Hadid. Its distinctive architecture made this building the symbol of modern Baku.
On the whole, this was perhaps not the most spectacular day trip I've ever made, but it was still interesting to spend some hours outside of Baku and broaden my understanding of the history and culture of Azerbaijan.

Gobustan National Park (Azerbaijani: Qobustan Milli Parkı), officially Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, is a hill and mountain site occupying the southeast end of the Greater Caucasus mountain ridge in Azerbaijan, mainly in the basin of Jeyrankechmaz River, between the rivers Pirsagat and Sumgait. It is located west of the settlement of Gobustan, about 40 miles (64 km) southwest of the centre of Baku on the west bank of the Caspian Sea.The territory of Gobustan is cut up with numerous, sometimes rather deep ravines (in Azerbaijani: gobu). That is a suggested origin of the Gobustan geographical name.
In 1966 Gobustan was declared a national historical landmark of Azerbaijan in an attempt to preserve the ancient carvings, relics, mud volcanoes and gas-stones in the region. The mountains Boyukdash, Kichikdash, Jingirdag, and the Yazili hill were taken under legal government protection. These mountains are located near the Caspian Sea, in the southeast part of Gobustan.
Ancient Petroglyphs at Gobustan National Park, Azerbaijan. UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 2007 Gobustan was declared a UNESCO World Heritage
The archeological value of Gobustan was discovered when a group of men went in to mine for gravel in 1930. While the zone is abundant in boulders and stone formations, one mine employee noticed the sacred carvings on the rocks. They also discovered man-made caves wherein more of the drawings can be found.
Gobustan is very rich in archaeological monuments. The reserve has more than 6,000 rock engravings dating back between 5,000–40,000 years. The site also features the remains of inhabited caves, settlements and burials, all reflecting an intensive human use by the inhabitants of the area during the wet period that followed the last Ice Age, from the Upper Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. The site, which covers an area of 537 ha, is part of the larger protected Gobustan Reservation.
Most of the rock engravings depict primitive men, animals, battle-pieces, ritual dances, bullfights, boats with armed oarsmen, warriors with lances in their hands, camel caravans, pictures of sun and stars.[3][4]
The petroglyphs and rock engravings are an exceptional testimony to a way of life that has disappeared, graphic representations of activities connected with hunting and fishing at a time when the climate and vegetation of the area were warmer and wetter than today.
Iskhag Jafarzadeh who was one of the pioneers of Azerbaijan archaeology and ethnography, excavated over seventy artifacts on Azerbaijan's territory and studied the Gobustan rock paintings.[5] In 1939, archeologist Isaak Jafarzade began the first archeological investigation of the petroglyphs at Gobustan. Teams identified and documented approximately 3,500 individual rock paintings on 750 rocks around 1940-1965 . According to the findings, the most ancient petroglyphs belong to the 12-8th century B.C. However, it is assumed that life existed here even earlier and that Gobustan was one of the cradles of civilization. This research was published in a book entitled Gobustan in 1978. Moroever, in 1948 during the Gobustan expedition, he discovered the Latin rock inscription near mountain Boyukdash, some 70 km far from Baku, which is the easternmost Roman evidence to be known.
Petroglyphs from Gobustan are depicted on the reverse of the Azerbaijani 5 manat banknote issued since 2006.As of 2011, The Petroglyph Museum functions in the park.
Today Gobustan is the most popular state reserve and is an invaluable treasure-house of Azerbaijan. For other state reserves see State Reserves of Azerbaijan.
Some of notable features among other animal rock arts are marine species that can not be found in today's Caspian Sea, such as baleen whales, beaked whales or dolphins, and auks.Wikipedia

Gobustan Mud Volcanoes, Azerbaijan
Gobustan offers a high concentration of mud volcanoes, which are natural-occurring formations of slurries, water, and gas, caused by imbalance of subterranean pressures. Mud volcanoes are not true volcanoes as they do not exude magma, but rather, mud slurry material.
Aside from the mud volcanoes, Gobustan National Park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ancient rock engravings.

Azerbaijan, Gobustan Mud Volcanos - To the Caspian Sea ep 23-Travel vlog calatorii tourism video
Azerbaijan styles itself as the land of fire. It’s a resource rich country, where oil literally seeps out of the ground and occasionally just doesn’t stop burning. A lesser known side effect of the huge stores of natural resources, has been the strange occurrence of rare mud volcanoes.
I was visiting Gobustan National Park not far from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, and a place where the mud volcanoes can be walked right up to and where the brave can even bathe in them.

Azerbaijan, Sheki Caravanserai and Juma Mosque-To the Caspian Sea ep18-Travel vlog calatorii tourism
“Caravanserai” historical complex in Sheki is two magnificent caravanserai which reached present days and traditionally named “Yukhary” and “Ashaghy” caravanserai, which means “Upper” and “Lower” Caravanserai in translation from Azerbaijani into English. Construction of these caravanserai is dated back to the 18th-19th centuries AD.
Since 1988, the lower caravanserai is used as a hotel complex for tourists, guests of the city and local residents.
Juma Mosque of Shamakhi or Friday Mosque of Shamakhi is a mosque in the city of Shamakhi, Azerbaijan.
Construction date of the mosque- 743-744 relies on research of a geological commission coming from Tiflis, which was led by prince Shahgulu Qajar. This date was defined with Arabic ligature on the facade of the Friday Mosque, stating the year 126 according to Islamic calendar as the establishment year.
