2013-07-10 - Hinterrauth, Austria to Scuol, Switzerland (Normal speed)
Note: This video runs at normal speed. The video is also available at 2x speed at
Hinterrauth (AT) to Scuol (CH) on the roads 184 in Austria and 27 in Switzerland.
The ride starts right at the official border between Austria and Switzerland (the border is 7 seconds in). Despite being a non member of the EU, Switzerland is a signatory of the Schengen agreement (at the moment at least) and therefore operates an open borders policy under normal conditions. The border checks are at Martina (06:00), when they apply.
Look for the fortunate decision not to overtake several vehicles at once at 04:12, when a car pulls straight across the road in front of me. No mirror check!
The journey ends above the railway station in Scuol, overlooking the valley towards Vulpera and the Hotel Schweizerhof, where I worked in the summer of 1990.
The part of Switzerland travelled through is part which still very much embraces the Romansh language ( which is Switzerland's 4th official language, but 10th most spoken in the country and spoken by less than 1% of the population.
Filmed using Liquid Image 727 mounted on handlebars. Bike is a Honda CBF1000A (2007 model) and I am riding two up with my wife, panniers and top box.
Ride goes through the following locations:
Hinterrauth (AT) Schalkl (AT) Vinadi (CH) Ovella (CH) Martina (CH) Strada (CH) Bain dal Rom (CH) Plan da Muglin (CH) Crusch (CH) Rablönch (CH) Scuol (CH)

Guarda (1,653 m above sea level) is a Graubünden municipality in the district of Inn. The village is located on a sunny terrace on the northern side of the valley in the Lower Engardin. To this day, the majority of the population speaks a Graubünden dialect of Romansh: Vallader. Guarda is considered one of the best preserved Engadin villages. It is almost entirely made up of typical Engadin buildings richly adorned with Sgraffito. The village was awarded the Wakker Prize for its exemplary preservation of its characteristic appearance. Guarda is also the setting of the well-known children's book «Schellenursli».
Due to its location, Guarda is a popular leisure destination and starting point for hikes in the area. The railway station lies below at 40 minutes walking distance, at 1,431 m above sea level, right next to Giarsun.
