Muhudu Maha Vihara is a Buddhist temple situated in Pottuvil in the Ampara District, in Eastern province of Sri Lanka.
This temple which is situated near a wide beach, was built over 2000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna.
The ruins and remains of ancient stupas, Avasa Geya and statues can be seen at the site. Important ruins at the temple premises include stone statues of lord Buddha.

Heute hatten wir noch einige Sehenswürdigkeiten auf dem Plan. Den Muhudu Maha Vihara Temple und Pottuvil Point in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka zu besichtigen. Wir ließen uns dafür von zwei Tuk Tuks abholen und fuhren nach Pottuvil.

Although it is said that Kirinda is the place where Vihara Maha Devi landed, it is also believed that Muhudu Maha Viharaya in Pottuvil is the place where she landed. It is said that the golden boat which she came is also stored in this temple. The remaining of the ancient temple has not been looked well and proper conservation has to be done to save it.

Arugam Bay | Muhudu Maha Viharaya (මුහුදු මහා විහාරය)
Lovely Arugam Bay, a moon-shaped curl of soft sand, is home to a famed point break that many regard as the best surf spot in the country. It's a tiny place, with a population of a few hundred, and everything is dotted along a single road which parallels the coast. So in other words, the epitome of the laid-back beach scene that first drew surfers and sun-seekers to Sri Lanka.
If you’re not a surfer, there are plenty of other draws: beachfront guesthouses, oceanside restaurants and a mellow, swing-another-day-in-a-hammock kind of vibe that’s totally removed from the brash west-coast beach resorts. Arugam Bay also makes a great base for several adventures in the surrounding hinterland. During the low season (November to April) things get extremely quiet and many places close altogether, but it can also be a serene time to visit, with few tourists and verdant landscapes.

Muhudu Maha Vihara (Sinhalaː මුහුදු මහා විහාරය) is a Buddhist temple situated at Pottuvil in Ampara District, Eastern province of Sri Lanka.This temple which is situated near a wide beach, has been built over 2000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna. Currently the ruins and remains of ancient stupas, Seema Malaka, Avasa Geya and statues can be seen at the site. Important ruins at the temple premises include stone statues of lord Buddha and two statues of old kings or gods.
This viharaya marks the landing place of Viharamahadevi, daughter of Kelani Tissa, who was destined to become the queen of King Kavan Tissa of the Rohana kingdom. According to the ancient chronicle Rajavaliya, it is stated that in the second century BC after Kelaniya was submerged by the sea due to a natural disaster, Devi the daughter of King of Kelaniya was cast to sea in a Golden Vessel to appease the gods, and washed ashore near the Muhudu Maha Vihara in Pottuwil. Later she became the main consort of king Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna Kingdom, under the name Viharamahadevi.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ නැගෙනෙහිර පළාතේ අම්පාර පරිපාලන දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ පොතුවිල් ප්‍රදේශයේ පිහිටා ඇත. විශාල වෙරළ පෙදෙසක් අසල පිහිටි පුරාවිද්‍යාත්මක වටිනාකමක් සහිත ථේරවාද පන්සලකි. බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේගේ හිටි පිළිමයක් හා බෝධිසත්වවරුන් හෝ අතීත පාලකයන් යැයි සැලකෙන පිළිම දෙකක් සහිත කැටයම් වලින් යුත් ශෛලමය පිළිම ගෙයක් හා ගල් කනු ඇත. විහාරමහා දේවිය ගොඩ බට ස්ථානය මෙය බවටද ජනශ්‍රැතියේ විශ්වාසයක් ඇත. මෙය අනුරාධපුර යුගයේදී කාවන්තිස්ස රජු විසින් ඉදිකරන ලද බව පිලිගැනේ. වර්තමානයේ මෙම ස්ථානයේ ආරක්ෂක හමුදා සාමාජිකයන් විසින් ඉදිකරන ලද විහාරයක් හා චෛත්‍යයක් දැක ගත හැක.
