Riding the Ozark National Forest
Four fellow riders and myself met up in Ozark, Arkansas for a two day ride in the Ozark National Forest. I plotted most of the roads from just looking at google maps so we didn't know what to expect. We weren't disappointed, the roads were much more technical than we thought and had better views than we expected. We had a DR650, 2 KLR650's, a DRZ400, and a KLX250 for bikes. Even though I was having some carburetor issues it was a great trip and I can't wait to return.

Madison County flooding, April 2011
Flash flooding in Madison County, Arkansas on April 25, 2011. After five straight days of thunderstorms and 15 or so inches of rain, the hills of Madison County are saturated. The roads are washing away, the low water crossings are impassable. This is on Madison County 6200 a ways in - coming in from the south of Huntsville by the War Eagle bridge. Just one instance of probably tens of thousands in the county - ribbons of water finding their way down the mountains, down, down - eventually finding their way to creeks, creeks to streams, and streams to rivers like the War Eagle.

The Ozarks, also referred to as the Ozark Mountains and Ozark Plateau, is a physiographic region in the U.S. states of Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas. The Ozarks cover a significant portion of northern Arkansas and southern Missouri, extending from Interstate 40 in Arkansas to the suburbs of St. Louis. A portion of the Ozarks extends into northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas.
There are two mountain ranges within the Ozarks: the Boston Mountains of Arkansas and the St. Francois Mountains of Missouri. Buffalo Lookout, the highest point in the Ozarks, is located in the Boston Mountains. Geologically, the area is a broad dome with the exposed core in the St. Francois Mountains. The Ozarks cover nearly 47,000 square miles (120,000 km2), making it the most extensive highland region between the Appalachians and Rockies. Sen. Jason Rapert makes a plea for all public officials to work together to help repair levees.
Sen. Jason Rapert (R) describes the historic flooding occurring along the Arkansas River near Conway, Arkansas in the small community of Toad Suck, Arkansas. He is standing in front of a levee which is being overtopped by flood waters for the second time in 6 months. He makes a plea for local, county, state and federal officials to take action to repair the levee which has a low spot that is the cause of the flooding so that homes and businesses will once again be protected as was intended when the levee was first built over 50 years ago. In addition, he makes a strong argument for putting the needs of America first and rebukes the federal government for sending hard-earned taxpayer dollars overseas when roads, levees and infrastructure in America needs attention right here at home.
Sen. Jason Rapert represents Senate District 35 in the Arkansas Senate and has been an outspoken advocate for the need to rehabilitate the levee systems which have been taken for granted and neglected for many years in communities all across his state and the nation.

The Ozarks, also called the Ozark Mountains or Ozark Plateau, is a physiographic region in the U.S. states of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and extreme southeastern Kansas. The Ozarks cover a significant portion of northern Arkansas and most of the southern half of Missouri, extending from Interstate 40 in Arkansas to the Interstate 70 in central Missouri.
There are two mountain ranges within the Ozarks: the Boston Mountains of Arkansas and the St. Francois Mountains of Missouri. Buffalo Lookout, the highest point in the Ozarks, is located in the Boston Mountains. Geologically, the area is a broad dome with the exposed core in the ancient St. Francois Mountains, some of the oldest rocks in North America. The Ozarks cover nearly 47,000 square miles (120,000 km2), making it the most extensive highland region between the Appalachians and Rockies. Together with the Ouachita Mountains, the area is known as the U.S. Interior Highlands.
The Salem Plateau, named after Salem, Missouri, makes up the largest geologic area of the Ozarks. The second largest is the Springfield Plateau, named after Springfield, Missouri, nicknamed the “Queen City of the Ozarks”. On the northern Ozark border are the cities of St. Louis and Columbia, Missouri. Significant cities in Arkansas include Fayetteville. Near the Missouri-Arkansas border is Branson, Missouri, a tourist destination and popularizer of Ozark culture.
