Tobermory is the capital of, and the only burgh on, the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. Tobermory is located in the northeastern part of the island, near the northern entrance of the Sound of Mull.
Many of the buildings on Main Street of Tobermory , predominantly shops and restaurants, are painted in various bright colours, making it a popular location for television programmes, such as the children's show Balamory. The burgh hosts the Mull Museum, the Tobermory whisky distillery (and from 2005 to 2009 there was also a brewery, the Isle of Mull brewing company) as well as Mull Aquarium, the first catch and release aquarium in Europe.
The clock tower on the harbour wall is a noted landmark. The town of Tobermory also contains an arts centre, An Tobar, the management of which was merged with Mull Theatre in 2012 to form the umbrella arts organisation Comar. The theatre remains, based just outside Tobermory in Drumfin, and is used by youth and adult dance and drama groups, hosting a wide variety of performances. Tobermorite, a calcium silicate hydrate found near Tobermory in 1880, was named after the town.
The fictional town of Torbay in Alistair MacLean's novel When Eight Bells Toll was based on Tobermory, and much of the 1971 movie was filmed in the town and other parts of Mull. The writer Saki gave the name to a talking cat in one of his most famous short stories and two well-loved children's TV series have made use of the town's name. Elisabeth Beresford called one of the Wombles 'Tobermory', and more recently the town played host to its almost-namesake Balamory for three years (2002–2005).
Ferries sail between Tobermory and the mainland to Kilchoan on the peninsula of Ardnamurchan, but principal access to the island is via ferry between Oban and Craignure. Craignure is some 22 miles from Tobermory. This is the main route for visitors to the island. An additional ferry route is between Lochaline on the mainland to Fishnish.

The town was founded as a fishing port in 1788, its layout based on the designs of Dumfriesshire engineer Thomas Telford. Ferries sail between Tobermory and the mainland to Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. During the Second World War, Tobermory was home to Royal Navy training base HMS Western Isles. In the middle of the 1800s emigrant sailors created the community of Tobermory, located in Ontario, Canada. Scotland road trip 2017 - Part 3, Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, engine room and tower tour
The rare opportunity to visit a light room of a lighthouse, providing you survive the stairs ....
As every years holiday, we went to Scotland in the Jeep and whichever way we go, it always ends with around 2500 miles on the clock.
This is a multi-part series in no particular order, i may do one short clip which outlines the route of this year (2017).
It's essentially a random mix of roads, ferries, villages, castles, distilleries, lighthouses and other stuff.
Just came back and there is so much footage to sort, so i can't tell right now how many clips we will end up with.
In this episode we visit the most westerly lighthouse on British mainland, the Ardnamurchan lighthouse.
This shows the full tower tour including climbing up the stairs, the view from the top and the engine room, enjoy !
The lighthouse is in active service since 1849 and owned by the Northern Lighthouse Board,
The engine room is mostly complete but not sure if the engines in running order or not. The Generator set certainly isn't.
The compressor set engines are Kelvin 2 cylinder Marine Diesels, not sure about their age as this type was produced from 1931 onwards.
The former keepers’ cottages and outbuildings have been managed by the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse Trust since 1996, luckily filming and photography was allowed everywhere.
As far as i know this is one of only 2 lighthouses in Scotland where you can do a light room tour.
One of the cottages is now a coffee shop, nice interior and doing really great coffees and scones.
Not quite easy to get there as it sits on a peninsula with essentially only one road leading towards. From the south, best route is via Isle of Mull which means at least 2 ferry crossings. Some impressions of our many ferry journeys will come soon as well.

Isle of Iona is a small island in the Inner Hebrides off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of Scotland. It was a centre of Gaelic monasticism for four centuries and is today known for its relative tranquility and natural environment. It is a tourist destination and a place for spiritual retreats. Its modern Gaelic name means Iona of (Saint) Columba (formerly anglicised Icolmkill).
Iona lies about 2 kilometres (1 mi) from the coast of Mull. It is about 2 kilometres (1 mi) wide and 6 kilometres (4 mi) long with a resident population of 125. The geology of the island consists mainly of Precambrian Lewisian gneiss with Torridonian sedimentary rocks on the eastern side and small outcrops of pink granite on the eastern beaches. Like other places swept by ocean breezes, there are few trees; most of them are near the parish church.
Iona's highest point is Dùn Ì, 101 metres (331 ft), an Iron Age hill fort dating from 100 BC – AD 200. Iona's geographical features include the Bay at the Back of the Ocean and Càrn Cùl ri Éirinn (the Hill/Cairn of [turning the] Back to Ireland), said to be adjacent to the beach where St. Columba first landed.
The main settlement, located at St. Ronan's Bay on the eastern side of the island, is called Baile Mòr and is also known locally as The Village. The primary school, post office, the island's two hotels, the Bishop's House and the ruins of the Nunnery are here. The Abbey and MacLeod Centre are a short walk to the north. Port Bàn (white port) beach on the west side of the island is home to the Iona Beach Party.
Iona Abbey, now an ecumenical church, is of particular historical and religious interest to pilgrims and visitors alike. It is the most elaborate and best-preserved ecclesiastical building surviving from the Middle Ages in the Western Isles of Scotland. Though modest in scale in comparison to medieval abbeys elsewhere in Western Europe, it has a wealth of fine architectural detail, and monuments of many periods. The 8th Duke of Argyll presented the sacred buildings and sites of the island to the Iona Cathedral trust in 1899.
In front of the Abbey stands the 9th century St Martin's Cross, one of the best-preserved Celtic crosses in the British Isles, and a replica of the 8th century St John's Cross (original fragments in the Abbey museum). Visitors can reach Iona by the 10-minute ferry trip across the Sound of Iona from Fionnphort on Mull. The most common route is via Oban in Argyll and Bute. Regular ferries connect to Craignure on Mull, from where the scenic road runs 37 miles (60 kilometres) to Fionnphort. Tourist coaches and local bus services meet the ferries.

Take the Isle of Mull Ferry. Well, three ferries really.
Apart from the isle of Mull ferry to Oban, there is the Fishnish to Lochaline Ferry and the Tobermory to Kilchoan Ferry.
For tourists travelling up the west of Scotland the isle of Mull ferry going to Graignure, offers a wide range of new destinations to explore. The ferry will allow you to tour the isle of Mull spending time in places like Tobermory which would please the youngsters no end. Especially if they were fans of the TV program Balamory.
This is not to say that all the tourist passengers will be disembarking at Craignure. No, no, they will stay aboard the ferry to enjoy the beautiful views once more on their return back to Oban. This works out cheaper for them and provides a sail while taking in the scenery.
For those embarking at Craignure there are coaches waiting to take passengers to all the different areas of Mull. Some of these coaches will take them to where they can catch another ferry to Staffa and enter Fingal's Cave. Plus take them to Iona where they can learn about the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland. The abbey and museum are well worth a visit as is Iona itself.
If you have heard about the isle of Mull railway and planning to see it, then you can save yourself some time as it has now been discontinued. It would actually be a good idea to check what trips and tours are still on when booking your island of Mull ferry trip to avoid disappointment.
Of course if you have brought your car onto the island you will then have the freedom to explore further afield. These routes on Mull are just for starters as there are more than just one ferry crossing to isle of Mull.
After driving off the ferry at Craignure, it's only a short drive up the road before you arrive at Fishnish. From here the ferry crosses the Sound of Mull to Lochaline on the Morvern Peninsulas allowing you to drive a different route north to Fort William and beyond.
To get to Fort William the Corran ferry will take you across the narrow stretch of water of Loch Linnhe to Corran. It runs at regular times up to around 9. 30 in the evening, so there is no need to book.
If you want to take in Tobermory before heading north you could carry on past Fishnish to Tobermory to stay overnight on the isle of Mull or just spend a few hours there. From here you could catch another connection, this time the Kilchoan to Mull ferry which takes you onto the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.
It's always wise to check out all of the isle of mull ferry times when planning your tours. Especially if you're running to a tight schedule. There is so much to take in and often you will find that you want to stop and take some images of the beautiful scenery.
The Mull to Kilchoan ferry will allow you to explore Ardnamurchan, skirt Loch Sunart and drive up to Mallaig on a route perhaps you have never done before.
The Kichoan and Lochaline ferries allow those with a car the opportunity to see places that so often are missed when sticking to the main routes driving north. These new areas of Morvern, Ardnamurchan, Sunart, Ardgour and Moidart will all be opened up to the traveller. For many it will be fresh new vistas and all because they decided to take the isle of Mull ferry from Oban.

The Hollywood Costumed Characters started gathering in front of the Grauman's Chinese Theater as a trendy tourist attraction when the Hollywood Highland Center was completed in November 2001. The characters dwell on 14 feet of public sidewalk and all operate independently taking photos with tourists for donations.Here is a list of all the Characters I have personally worked side by side with, Darth Vader, Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Snoopy, Elmo, SpongeBob, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Tinker Bell, The Little Mermaid, Catwoman, Michael Jackson, Bumble Bee, Optimus Prime, Wolverine, Spiderman, Tigger, The Joker, Two Face, The Riddler, Captain Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissor Hands, Mr. Incredible, Dora the Explorer, Shrek, George Washington, The Tin Man and Dorothy, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Freddy Krueger, Jason, Michael Myers, Darth Maul, Marilyn Monroe, Princess Leia, Bruce Lee, Charlie Chaplin, The Terminator, Supergirl, Wonder Woman,and a ton more. I started as Jason in August 2006 and have portrayed Darth Maul, The Cat in the Hat and Barney, the Past 5 years have been interesting.While working and taking photos with the tourists I am surrounded by great landmarks like Walt Disney's El Capitan Theatre, The Jimmy Kimmel Live Building, The Hollywood Wax Museum,Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, The Hollywood Museum,The Hard Rock Cafe,Grauman's Chinese Theater, The Historic Roosevelt Hotel and a ton more. The people I meet are from all over the planet, Australia, France, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Italy, The Middle East, Israel, Canada, The United Kingdom, India, Denmark, Holland, Norway and more. Tourists visiting the Hollywood Highland Complex come out on the public sidewalk and get photos with their favorite superheroes or childrens character. Cash donations are given in exchange for photos from change to the rare 100 dollar bill, it happens. So when on Vacation or a weekend getaway to Hollywood, a photo with a Hollywood Costumed Character is a must. Professional Photographers love filming us and several documentaries have been made with the characters as the main subject.Confessions of a Superhero being the mainstream documentary featuring Superman, The Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman and Batman. Other Documentary efforts are The Reinactors and a Star Wars themed film featuring the true Star Wars fans on Hollywood Blvd. Seeing the multiple documentary frenzy I decided to be different and write a comedy feature film which I started filming in February 2009. The work in progress title is They Work for Tips. I designed the film making process for the internet audience writing the movie to be 7 short films and 24 comedy shorts as well as a feature film. I have been able to edit my rough cuts and post them on the internet as short films and comedy shorts during the film making process. I was able to beef up the scenes with extra content and actors for the internet versions and short films, it's been great. Not quite Cirque Du Soleil or Oscar material, I have based the film in front of the Kodak Theatre which hosts the Oscars and Cirque Du Soleil. I have been able to sharpen my improve skills and comedy routine while working the tourists as they have walked past me the last 5 years and have had a blast, thanks everyone.Rich Ramsey, U Never Die Entertainment.

Isle of Staffa to Iona the Island West of Mull
If you have been watching the other videos of our Three Isles Tour series then you will know that visiting Iona is the final island destination of the tour. If you haven't seen the earlier videos, see a list of links to them in the description below.
As we approached Iona, the skipper of our small boat advised the best place to have lunch was the restaurant close to the ferry pickup point as the hotel would have finished serving at this time. This we did and a nice lunch it was. Of course as part of my lunch I has to try a plate of those fresh local mussels mentioned by our coach driver who drove us from Craignure to Fionnphort. My wife took a notion for her favourite soup, Cullen Skink which she said was delicious.
With lunch out of the way, we set off to visit the Abbey. Things are very quiet here on Iona with just the handful of visitors like ourselves and the few friendly locals we passed on the way.
Very soon we arrived at the ruins of the Nunnery which dates to the 13th century. You will find a poster here which gives good details about its history.
Carrying on along this small path takes us back onto the main road where after a short walk we reached the Graves of the Kings and in the left hand corner sits St Oran’s Chapel.
Kings from Scotland, Ireland and France lie here and perhaps surprisingly due to the history of Iona, Viking kings as well. Even Macbeth, yes that Macbeth of Shakespeare fame. Another, although not a king is John Smith who was the leader of the Labour Party in 1992 until he died of a heart attack 1994.
Just next to the Graves of the Kings is where you will buy the tickets to the Abbey. There is so much to see in both the Abbey and the museum that you will need to keep moving along, if you don't want to miss your ferry.
The museum is a must, as this is where so many interesting items have been placed including a replica of the Book of Kells.
For us it was time to head back and catch the ferry for the short crossing back to Fionnphort. As with the time on Staffa flying by, the same applies here on Iona. There are hotels in Iona as there are in Fionnphort so the next time we visit this area we will be staying for a longer spell.
The crossing time is only around 20 minutes but if the weather is clear and you look to the south, you will be able to pick out the easily recognised Paps of Jura.
Embarking from the ferry it's only a short walk to our coaches waiting in the car park. Now we will be heading back to catch the Craignure to Oban ferry. Which will be the final part of this wonderful trip.
