Don't Go Greyhound Racing billboard now on display in Mullingar
The latest Don't Go Greyhound Racing billboard is now on display in Mullingar, County Westmeath.
The billboard, part of the Greyhound Action Ireland/ICABS nationwide campaign, can be seen on the Dublin Road, one of the main roads into Mullingar.
The billboards are the latest step in the effort to end greyhound racing, an activity which is responsible for the deaths of thousands of healthy greyhounds every year.
Displaying the message EXPLOITED, INJURED, KILLED - DON'T GO GREYHOUND RACING, the billboards are a direct plea to the Irish public to boycott this cruel industry. Greyhound Action Ireland and the Irish Council Against Blood Sports are appealing to people not to attend races or organise Christmas work parties, stag and hen parties or fundraisers at greyhound tracks.
As revealed on the recent RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running for Their Lives documentary, 6,000 greyhounds are mercilessly killed every year in Ireland because they are not fast enough to win races.
Dogs are also continuing to suffer and die at greyhound tracks. Responding to a Dail Question this month from Maureen O'Sullivan TD, the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed revealed that since the start of 2019, 228 greyhounds suffered injuries and 73 were killed at tracks. The latest sickening figures bring to 1,787 the number of greyhounds injured and 579 the number killed at tracks around Ireland in the past five years alone.
The track in Mullingar is one of the worst for injuries and deaths. At least 238 greyhounds suffered injuries and 58 were killed by a track vet at Mullingar stadium over the past five years alone, sickening Irish Greyhound Board statistics show. Among the injuries suffered by dogs there are “severed spine” and fractured hock bones.
The new billboard campaign has been launched just weeks after this cruel and dying industry was, for the 19th year in a row, promised millions of euros more from the public purse - €16.8 million in Budget 2020 (more than a quarter of a billion euros since 2001).
A RED C opinion poll carried out last month showed that two out of every three Irish adults agree that the government should stop funding greyhound racing. Petitions calling for an end to the funding have now been signed over 300,000 times.

STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING
Another €16.8 million of scarce public funds has been allocated to greyhound racing in Budget 2020. Since 2001, greyhound racing has received more than a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money. Please contact your local TDs and demand that they stop this latest funding pledge by voting AGAINST the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2019 next month.
