Visit Prague 5 - Strahov Library (Strahovská Knihovna)
Visit Prague 5: Strahov Library (Strahovská Knihovna). In this film, we leave Prague Castle behind and head further uphill to the Strahov Monastery to see the famous Strahov Library with its extensive collection of old manuscripts and books - and its richly decorated interior.
This is a Short from my Prague mini-documentary, Visit Prague. This series of 8 short videos covers what to see, recommendations for where to go, where to eat and drink and how to get there and get around if you have just a few days to tour the Czech capital as a tourist on a short visit.
From the narration:
After leaving the Prague Castle complex, we headed up Úvoz Street to the Strahov Monastery.
By the way, if you’ve had enough of hills, there’s a tram route nearby!
The monastery was founded in the 12th century and our aim was to buy tickets and see the famous Strahov Library there.
The library houses thousands of old prints and books, including one from the 9th century and many more from the 17th and 18th centuries.
There are two splendidly decorated halls in the library.
The baroque 17th century Theological Hall contains about 18,000 theological books. The room has an ornate stucco ceiling and the frescoes date back to the 18th century.
The 18th century Philosophical Hall was constructed with walnut and contains medical, mathematical geographical and other books.
The Journey of Mankind to Wisdom was painted on the ceiling in 1794.
In the corridor between the two halls there are rare books or facsimiles on display.
There are also science collections, for example the specimens in this display cabinet.
It’s worth noting that some historic sites in Prague, including the cathedral and this library, charge a fee for taking photos.

Prague floods 2002, Czech republic 4
Prague Floods 2002 (Hochwasser in Prag, Tschechische republik) - Karlín, Troja
Another video Prague Floods, part 1
Prague received significant damage from what were deemed to be the worst floods ever to hit the capital. The flow of Vltava culminated at 5300 m³/s, 20% more than during the flood of 1845. Among the regions of the capital city most severely affected were: Karlín, Kampa and Holešovice, where there was significant risk of building collapse. Most of Prague's art work was saved due to advance warning of high water levels,[8] however there was significant damage to the Prague Metro subway system, much of which was completely flooded.
Prague's Jewish Quarter also received significant damage, a part of the estimated $30 million in damage to Czech cultural sites including: the Prague Municipal Library, Malá Strana, the National Theatre and Terezín.
The evacuations before the worst of the flooding have been cited as one of the reasons for relatively little loss of life in the capital. An estimated 40,000 people were evacuated from Prague. One of the most visible victims of the summer's flood was Gaston, a sea lion from the Prague Zoo who swam to Germany following the flooding of his aquarium. For some time, it was believed he would survive, however he died following capture in Dresden.
In total, 17 people lost their lives in the Czech Republic due to the floods, and damage from the flood was estimated at between 70 and 73 billion CZK

The World’s Most Beautiful Library - The Klementinum library
The World’s Most Beautiful Library Is In Prague, Czech Republic
Prague's Klementinum library was opened in 1722 and has easily become one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. Aside from housing over 20,000 novels for your reading pleasure, this location showcases absolutely stunning Baroque architecture.
The ceiling frescoes were painted by Jan Hiebl. In 1781, director Karel Rafael Ungar established Biblioteca Nationalis, a collection of Czech language literature. Some of the rare historical books from this collection have been sent to Google for scanning and will eventually be available on Google Books.
Just as the library is a rare and little-known treasure, so is it associated with several little-known facts: the Klementinum used to be the third largest Jesuit college in the world; recording of local weather began there in 1775 and has continued ever since; it is featured in a novel by famous Spanish-language writer Jorge Luis Borges.
In 1777, Maria Theresa declared Klementinum to be a public and university library. This allowed the Prague community to witness this local treasure in person, to marvel at the globes that line the center of the library, and to study Jan Klein's intricate astronomical clocks.

There were so many people at the Charles Bridge and visiting the tower was so worth it. We learnt a lot about the history of the place. We kept seeing the sign for the museum of torture so we decided to pay a visit and the whole time, we were like agonising in pain from imagining the ways of torture. Then we wanted to visit the astronomical clock but we kept being distracted along the way, visiting the stores, having dessert and eventually, eating our dinner. When we came out from the restaurant, it was dark already. We also stumbled upon the Municipal Library where there was a book tower which was quite cool.
