A Arte da História de Óbidos
A tour of Óbidos, the perfect little medieval town
Óbidos is one of those places that you fall in love with the moment you see it. Small enough that can forget about your car and walk around the romantic medieval centre and enjoy life.
Everything you need is there from amazing handmade local crafts to cherry liqueur and chocolate while you read a nice book that you bought in one of the truly amazing bookshops you find. And that's probably why I see more and more people going there every year.
Things to do in Óbidos
We already touched on some of the highlights, like trying the amazing cherry liqueur, the delicious chocolate and visiting the great bookshops and local artists, but wait there's even more.
Check out the castle
Walk around the city walls
Take one of the hiking paths near Óbidos
Lose yourself in the streets of the city
Visit the church and sanctuary of Óbidos
Admire the city entrance with its tile work
Óbidos aqueduct
Check out the Museum
Take a short trip to the lagoon
Bookshops in Óbidos
Ok, this deserves a highlight, first because we love books, I mean who doesn't but more importantly because I find the bookshops to be super original and cool. I can just browse the books and loose track of time.
Óbidos cherry liqueur
Every time we visit Óbidos the first thing we do is look for a place to have a cherry liqueur cup. It's served in a chocolate cup, and it has a similar taste to Mon Cheri only ten times better. We love it and we are not alone because this is quite popular for both Portuguese and foreigners alike.
Óbidos castle
Aside from all the cool things that we mentioned the castle and it's walls are probably the main reason we keep visiting. We love the views and how you can good around the entire city, this alone is worth the trip.
This year we did take our son and we had to be extra careful as it's easy to just fall off a great height given the lack of any protection.
Óbidos from Lisbon
This is our usual trip as we have a house in Lisbon and it's a perfect day trip. You can take a highway all the way to Óbidos and be there in less than one hour. Upon arrival, you will find some parking areas are paid but you can simply park a bit further in a free area and walk as it's super close.
Hotels in Óbidos
You will find many options ranging from the exquisite Pousada if you want to stay in a 700-year-old castle and your budget allows to family-owned hotels in the centre. Have your pick.
A Christmas village
From the end of November until early January Óbidos turns into a Christmas fantasy land. Quite famous, crowded and you do need a ticket usually around €5 but kids love it. Santa Claus makes an appearance of course as do the many helpers, and it seems like the village is turned into a life-sized Christmas crib. A must for families with young kids.
Chocolat festival
Don't go if you're on a diet of course. This is a proper international festival with famous chefs, large chocolate sculptures, demos and workshops. You can appreciate the creativity and detail that goes into these delicious pieces of art plus you get to taste some amazing combinations.
Usually from around 25 of Abril to May 5th, and if you plan on visiting be sure to book a place to stay early as the accommodations are quite limited in Óbidos.

Porto
Day 1 in Portugal
Started off with a little trip to Porto by myself. I thought I might as well visit a different city before the main trip, plus it was only approx £10 more for a flight to Lisbon.
I went to centro Porto to have a walk about. Visiting a wine museum, be courts ( because why not....and I didn't realise it was the courts...), photography museum and a nightclub.
I tried some Portuguese sweets ( no idea what they were called)
Lisbon day 2
Flew from Porto to Lisbon and met up with 3 friends asset the airport. Took an Uber taxi to the sexy corinthia hotel lisboa.
We were greeted by our host who have us our colorful pink wristbands and told us what excursions we had included ( Obidos town guided tour, Vineyard tour and a 24 hour Hop on hop off bus tour).
First day was a relax day....so we left the hotel to explore. Played in a park and got lost to find out we were 2 minutes from the hotel originally before we went the wrong way.
Day 3 was the Obidos town and Vineyard guided tour.
SOOOO many hills in Obidos and wall climbing opportunities. I climbed the big wall and walked along it to find a a hole in the wall big enough to fit through...so I did.
While we were there we had a few Shot of a cherry liqueur (i forgot the name) in a chocolate cup.
Then off to the Vineyard tour. I've never been to a vineyard and I'm not a fan of tours but this one was actually really good. We got told about how they make different wines And spirits. (i didn't know they used red grapes to make some white wines!!!)
They gave us around 6 different wines to taste ( as much as we wanted) and a buffet meal. Yum.
Day 4.. 24 hour bus tour time!!!
Got up for breakfast buffet and jumped on the plan topped bus to remember I left my phone in the room. Had to run back and jump on the next one.

Portugal Day-6 - Batalha Monastery, Alcobaça Monastery, Nazare, Óbidos, Fátima
Mosteiro Santa Maria da Vitória, more commonly known as the Batalha Monastery, is a Dominican convent in Batalha, in the District of Leiria, Portugal. It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, intermingled with the Manueline style...The convent was built to thank the Virgin Mary for the Portuguese victory over the Castilians in the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, fulfilling a promise of King John I of Portugal...The Chapter House reminds the visitors of the military reason for its foundation: two sentinels guard the tombs of two unknown soldiers killed in World War I...Capelas Imperfeitas (The Unfinished Chapels) remain as a testimony of the fact that the monastery was never actually finished...
The Alcobaça Monastery (Portuguese: Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça) is a Mediaeval Roman Catholic Monastery located in the town of Alcobaça, in central Portugal. It was founded by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, in 1153, and maintained a close association with the Kings of Portugal throughout its history...Peter became King of Portugal in 1357. He then stated that he had secretly married Inês, who was consequently the lawful queen, although his word was, and still is, the only proof of the marriage. Legend has it that he had Inês's body exhumed from her grave and forced the entire court to swear allegiance to their new queen by kissing the corpse's hand. She was later buried at the Monastery of Alcobaça where her coffin can still be seen, opposite Peter's so that, according to the legend, at the Last Judgment Peter and Inês can look at each other as they rise from their graves...
Nazaré...a picturesque seaside village. Located on the Atlantic coast, it has long sandy beaches (considered by some to be among the best beaches of Portugal), crowded with tourists in the summer. The town used to be known for its traditional costumes worn by the fishermen and their wives who worn the traditional headscarf and embroidered aprons over seven flannel skirts in different colours...
Óbidos is a town (Portuguese: vila)...The area of the town of Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall...Óbidos remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture...Ginja, is a liqueur made by infusing ginja berries, (sour cherry)...in alcohol (aguardente is used) and adding sugar together with other ingredients...In Óbidos, Ginjinha is commonly served in a small edible chocolate cup...
Fátima became famous for the affluence of pilgrims to the Marian shrine (with a largest Basilica dedicated to Our Lady), built to commemorate the religious events of 1917 when three shepherd children reported several apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary...[from Wikipedia]

Check into your hotel. The rest of the day is free for you to start exploring lively Madrid. Tonight, meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers. (Dinner)
Day 2MADRID--AVILA--SALAMANCA--COIMBRA, PORTUGAL
Journey west to fortified Avila, then on to Salamanca, just six miles from the spot where Wellington routed Napoleon's army in 1812. Make sure you spend some time wandering around Salamanca's Plaza Mayor, the most beautiful square in Spain. Leave Salamanca and head westwards to the fortress town of Ciudad Rodrigo, perched high above the Rio Agueda. A profusion of woodlands and mountains awaits you as you journey into the valley of the Sierra da Estrela on your way for an overnight in Coimbra. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day 3COIMBRA--FATIMA--OBIDOS--LISBON
This morning, enjoy an orientation tour of Coimbra, strategically situated on a hill overlooking the Mondego River. Next, Fatima. Stop here to see the sanctuary, made famous by the Virgin's apparition to three shepherd children, Francisco, Jacinth, and Lucia, on May 13, 1917. A few more miles for a stop in Obidos, a fortified city still flanked by towers and bastions overlooking the countryside dotted with windmills. Overnight in Lisbon. (Breakfast)
Day 4LISBON
Henry the Navigator made Lisbon the 15th-century mistress of the seas. You'll see his monument, the Belem Tower, the Moorish Citadel, the impressive Black Horse Square, and other highlights on the guided sightseeing excursion. Spend the afternoon in the Alfama's tile-decorated streets, or take an optional excursion along the Estoril Coast to Cascais and Sintra. (Breakfast)
Day 5LISBON--SEVILLE, SPAIN

for two overnights. (Breakfast)
Day 6SEVILLE
One of Spain's most colorful cities. Perhaps you'd like to spend the morning enjoying an optional sightseeing tour including the main highlights of this vibrant city. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Day 7SEVILLE--CORDOBA--MADRID
Drive north towards Carmona, an Old World country town dominated by an ancient Alcazar, to Cordoba. This is Spain's most Moorish city with its great mosque, which is rightly known as one of Islam's greatest pieces of architecture outside the Arab world and now a Catholic cathedral since 1236. Later, into the very heart of La Mancha, famed for its castles and windmills. Overnight in Madrid. (Breakfast)
Day 8MADRID
Not only is it the capital of Spain, but because it is situated 2,180 feet above sea level, the Spaniards rightly say Madrid is the nearest thing to heaven. Enjoy the main highlights on the included guided sightseeing excursion. The optional trip to Toledo is rewarding in more ways than one; the splendid setting of this old walled city above the Tagus was made famous in El Greco's painting, and even now it's like a great open-air museum of Spanish history and art. (Breakfast)

JOSEFA DE ÓBIDOS
Josefa de Ayala Figueira, known as Josefa de Óbidos, was born in Seville in February 1630 and died in Obidos on July 22, 1684. She was a painter born in Spain who lived and produced in Portugal. Having lived almost always in Quinta da Capeleira, the reputation she won was such that many of those who went to bathe in the Caldas da Rainha, deviated from their way, to go to Obidos to greet her.
