Majestic Mushrooms - Canberra Region
Majestic Mushrooms is a mushroom growing business located in Murrumbateman in Yass Valley, and owner-operators Ian and Helen Chu definitely aren’t keeping us in the dark about their business success in the region.
The couple bought their property in Murrumbateman ten years ago and started their mushroom growing business from scratch, building their climate controlled growing rooms, and producing about two to three tonnes of mushrooms each week.
Skip forward just five years and they have expanded to produce 20 tonnes of handpicked White, Swiss Brown and Portobello mushrooms per week, employing around 15 staff who come from the local Yass Valley and Canberra regions. And their fresh fungi is now sold in Canberra at some of the best fruit and veg shops, markets, supermarkets and restaurants, as well as throughout NSW and around Australia.
Ian and Helen credit their success to having a good business plan, great connections, knowing their competitors, focusing on quality mushrooms and good customer service. Combining these elements with their ever-present commitment and dedication, Ian and Helen ensured they found a niche market in an area which is close to both Sydney and Canberra.
They say they love Yass Valley and it’s a great place to start a business and raise a family – not too far from Canberra, beautiful rolling hills, great neighbours, plenty of wildlife …some might say it’s majestic.
Yass Valley offers many business opportunities across the region for locals and newcomers to the area. Our competitive advantage is our location, just 45 minutes’ from Canberra, and three hours’ drive from Sydney, the area is very well connected at the junction of five main highways. A variety of industries have seen business success here including agriculture, food and wine, retail, hospitality, tourism and business services. Yass Valley – It’s good for business.

Canberra Travel Guide - Memorable Australian Moments
Canberra Travel Guide - Memorable Australian Moments
Canberra is the capital city of Australia. The city is located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), an enclave in the south-east of New South Wales. Canberra is a planned city, with national monuments, museums and galleries built around a large artificial lake. As a bush capital, Canberra is also a great place to enjoy the outdoors, with excellent cycling, gardens, parks, bush walking and nature reserves.
Canberra was established in 1913 as the capital for the newly federated Australian nation. The ACT was excised from New South Wales and put under the control of the federal government. The creation of the planned city was not without critics who claimed it was a waste of a good sheep pasture.
Canberra's design was conceived by the American architects Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin, built on the shores of an artificial lake (Lake Burley Griffin). Populated at first largely by politicians and public servants, it took time to develop its own identity and culture. Extensive building of national facilities and a concerted effort to develop public institutions in the city have made it an interesting destination.
Lake Burley Griffin divides central Canberra. The central shopping and commercial area, known as Civic, is on the north side and the parliamentary triangle and embassy area is on the south side. National institutions are likewise divided, examples being the National Museum of Australia and the Australian War Memorial on the north side and the National Library and National Gallery of Australia on the south side.
There are suburbs surrounding central Canberra, and also suburbs surrounding several outlying town centres. These town centres are, Belconnen and Gungahlin to the north, and Tuggeranong and Woden to the south. The ACT also has surrounding towns, such as Murrumbateman, which boasts a strong cool climate wine selection. The historic village of Hall is also on the outskirts of Canberra.
While Canberra on the whole is not walkable by any standards, some parts of it, including Civic and the central part of the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, as well as the sights at the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, are possible to tackle on foot. For transfers between suburbs, the best options are the bus, the car, and the bicycle.
As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is home to many important institutions of the federal government, national monuments and museums. This includes Parliament House, the official residence of the monarch's representative the Governor-General, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance such as the Australian War Memorial, the Australian National University, the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Gallery, the National Museum and the National Library. The city is also home to many important institutions of the Australian Defence Force including the Royal Military College Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy. It also hosts the majority of foreign embassies in Australia as well as regional headquarters of many international organisations, not-for-profit groups, lobbying groups and professional associations. Canberra has many fine eateries, but beware - many will be closed on Sundays. All public buildings in Canberra are smoke free.

Shaw Vineyard Estate - Canberra Region
After searching for a location that offered the perfect lifestyle and a great place to raise their kids, Graeme and Ann Shaw purchased 'Olleyville' to plant the vineyard in 1998.
A year later, they planted 85 acres of grape vines, and became a grape-grower for Australia’s then-largest wine company. In the years that followed, Shaw Vineyard Estate began producing its own range of premium cool climate wines, winning an array of national and international awards for excellence.
The family business now employs their son, daughter and son-in-law, and a number of local staff. Graeme says their number one preference is to stay local, and use local suppliers wherever possible.
Shaw Vineyard Estate is a half hour drive to Canberra, and enjoys easy access to the vibrant Canberra restaurant scene. Graeme says that the Canberra region is gaining a worldwide reputation for quality grapes, with Canberra region wines now found throughout Canberra and Sydney. The business also exports wines to China, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.
Of living in the Yass Valley, Graeme says that they love being able to use Canberra’s facilities, while living in the country. “Canberra is a half hour drive. We can get to the snow or beach within an hour and a half. And, we’re in a great country area for a great country lifestyle!”

Larkhill Winery - Canberra Region
When academics David and Sue Carpenter fell in love with cool climate wines in the 1970s, they decided to plant their own vineyard on an estate in Bungendore, 30 kilometres north-east of Canberra.
Since then, the couple have purchased a second winery in Murrumbateman. They are passionate about using organic and biodynamic farming practices, with both Lark Hill Winery in Bungendore and Dark Horse Vineyard in Murrumbateman certified biodynamic.
In 2002, David and Sue’s son Chris joined Lark Hill as a winemaker. Chris lives in Canberra’s inner north, commuting just 20 minutes to the winery each day. He says that Bungendore’s proximity to Canberra means they can live five minutes from great schools and restaurants, medical care and the community, while farming in a rural location and growing grapes in a pristine, chemical-free environment.
Lark Hill Winery employs full time staff to work in the vineyard, and has a roster of local employees who manage the wine bar and café. “We have a pretty small team here, but we do get great access to fantastic employees from the local region,” says Chris.
The winery also benefits from Canberra’s booming food tourism market. “Gone are the days when people visited Canberra and Bungendore for museums and political attractions. Now it’s great restaurants, great bars, the Bungendore Farmers Market, and more!”
Having grown up on the Lark Hill estate, Chris says that Bungendore is a fantastic place to live and raise a family. And with Canberra so close, it offers all the benefits of larger blocks, clean air, clear skies and a peaceful lifestyle, with easy access to a great capital city.

Welcome to Prize Wines. A sporadic video blog about the wines I'm drinking now.
Please bear with me as I approach this from a casual wine drinker background. I'm not a wine grower. I'm a social wine drinker. So my description or off the cuff comments may not cover all the nuances of the wine. If you'd like to add more to my description of a particular wine, especially if you're the wine grower, distributor or retailer please feel free to comment below.

Thank you for watching my wine reviews.
I've received many fantastic and appreciated comments from people all around that have found the videos useful and I have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of people watching them (thank you, thank you very much), so in 2015 I will return with more wine review videos.
If you are a wine producer and would like me to review your wine for free, please click on 'about' on my channel and send me a message. I'll email you the address to post the wine to as soon as possible. If you find the video useful you are welcome to use it on your website. Videos are recorded with a Samsung Galaxy Note II mobile and are completely unscripted.
I cannot guarantee that I will be able to review every bottle of wine I receive but I will endeavour to do so. If your wine tastes great, it'll definitely get a review. If it doesn't, I would not wish to upload the video in case I was just unlucky enough to get a bad bottle, or there was some bottle shock in delivery, or it had been affected by the heat.
I'm not a sommelier so, in that sense, you can receive down-to-earth reviews from the point of view of a real customer who just loves wine.
If you're an enjoyer of fine wines like me and you like these videos and would like to contribute in some way, feel free to leave a comment below on what your favourite wine is like. If you're interested in supporting the creation of future videos, please consider buying our ebook: Secret Sydney Bars Walking Tour Guide 2014: A Guide to Finding Over 37 Interesting, Unique and Hidden Bars in Sydney City, from The Rocks to City Centre. SUMMARY
=======
Canberra ( (listen), )
is the capital city of Australia. With a population of 410,301, it is Australia's largest inland city and the eighth-largest city overall. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), 280 km (170 mi) south-west of Sydney, and 660 km (410 mi) north-east of Melbourne. A resident of Canberra is known as a Canberran. Although Canberra is the capital and seat of government, many federal government ministries have secondary seats in state capital cities, as do the Governor-General and the Prime Minister.
The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city outside of any state, similar to Washington, D.C. in the United States, or Brasília in Brazil. Following an international contest for the city's design, a blueprint by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913. The Griffins' plan featured geometric motifs such as circles, hexagons and triangles, and was centred on axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks in the Australian Capital Territory.
The city's design was influenced by the garden city movement and incorporates significant areas of natural vegetation. The growth and development of Canberra were hindered by the World Wars and the Great Depression, which exacerbated a series of planning disputes and the ineffectiveness of a procession of bodies that were created in turn to oversee the development of the city. The national capital emerged as a thriving city after World War II, as Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies championed its development and the National Capital Development Commission was formed with executive powers. Although the Australian Capital Territory is now self-governing, the Commonwealth Government retains some influence through the National Capital Authority.
As the seat of the government of Australia, Canberra is the site of Parliament House, the official residence of the Monarch's representative the Governor-General, the High Court and numerous government departments and agencies. It is also the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance, such as the Australian War Memorial, Australian National University, Royal Australian Mint, Australian Institute of Sport, National Gallery, National Museum and the National Library. The Australian Army's officer corps is trained at the Royal Military College, Duntroon and the Australian Defence Force Academy is also located in the capital.
The ACT is independent of any state to prevent any one state from gaining an advantage by hosting the seat of Commonwealth power. The ACT has voting representation in the Commonwealth Parliament, and has its own Legislative Assembly and government, similar to the states.
As the city has a high proportion of public servants, the Commonwealth Government contributes the largest percentage of Gross State Product and is the largest single employer in Canberra, although no longer the majority employer. Compared to the nat ...
