Francis Kéré (MI/ARCH 2016)

As the first son of the head of his rural village in Burkina Faso, Francis Kéré was the only child allowed to attend school. This seemingly small detail completely changed the trajectory of his life, as he was eventually afforded the opportunity to train as an architect and builder in Germany. After graduating with his diploma, he set out to reinvest his hard-earned knowledge back into the community that nurtured him as a child. Returning to Gando with a simple vision for an improved primary school, Kéré would later take home the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for a design that integrates traditional and modern techniques while addressing the pressing concerns of climate and sustainability. Harnessing this success, he began to integrate other community and educational resources into an ambitious masterplan. Through the process of building in Gando, Kéré has empowered those in his village to be creative with resources for the betterment of their individual and collective futures. These efforts continue to create awareness for developmental and economic problems facing communities in rural Africa and abroad. The work has earned prestigious awards such as the Schelling Architecture Award 2014, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, the BSI Swiss Architectural Award, the Marcus Prize and the Global Holcim Gold Award. Francis Kéré is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and the Royal Institute of British Architects. He has held professorships at the Harvard Graduate School of Design as well as the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio.

Lugano (also UK: Italian: [luˈɡaːno]; Ticinese: Lugano is a city in southern Switzerland in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino bordering Italy. It has a population (as of December 2017) of 63,494, and an urban agglomeration of over 145,000. The 9th largest Swiss city, it is the largest in Ticino and largest with an Italian speaking majority outside of Italy. The city lies on Lake Lugano, surrounded by the mountains of the Lugano Prealps. The eastern part of the city shares a border with Italy.
The Palazzo dei Congressi is the performing arts center for Lugano. It is a main venue for the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana.
The Lugano Festival runs during April and May, followed by the related Progetto Martha Argerich in June. Estival Jazz arrives in July. Between July and August there is the LongLake Festival, one of the greatest urban open air happenings in Switzerland. During one month, the LongLake offers over 300 events in downtown Lugano. The Blues-to-Bop Festival arrives in late August and early September turns the city into a hive of activity as thousands crowd the streets and piazzas for free open-air concerts.
In 1956, the Teatro Kursaal in Lugano hosted the first Eurovision Song Contest.
The MASI (Museo d'Arte della Svizzera italiana) has two parallel objectives: the conservation and study of the Museum's permanent collection, which is above all made up of works belonging to the 19th and 20th centuries; and the planning and presentation of temporary exhibitions. It focuses on art of the cantons of Ticino and Graubünden (Grigioni in Italian) and present artists from the region on a regular basis.
The district of Brè-Aldesago offers its visitors charming corners created by its characteristic stone buildings. The cobble stone streets of the town offer art enthusiasts an artistic path that is very interesting both because of the presence of national and international names and the combination of art and the environment
Not Vital Interview: Moments You Never Forget
Swiss artist Not Vital is an intriguing example of how the gap between art and architecture is narrowing. The artist, who is renowned for his unorthodox architectural structures around the world, here describes how his projects derive from moments in his own life.
“The winters are very long, so our favourite colour is white.” Vital grew up in a place where mountains and snow dominated the landscape and where school was only seven months a year, leaving five months of vacation, which was spent building tree houses. He explains his journey to Niger in 1999 with the fact that he was drawn to “the mountains in sand” of the Sahara, and soon after his arrival he bought a piece of land and began working on his new house. The building was a challenge, but this is what spurs Vital as an artist who makes architecture: “It’s in a way much more intriguing and much more interesting. It’s an adventure to do that, and since I’m not an architect I need that – I want that.”
Vital’s everlasting fascination of the sunsets in Africa prompted him to build a house in which one could watch them uninterrupted. This became the astonishing ‘The House to Watch the Sunset’ (2005), which is situated in an oasis close to Agadez in Niger. The construction has three flights of exterior stairs around its tall slender central structure, which rises above the surrounding palm trees. The same original approach was implemented when Vital built the remarkable pyramid-shaped school ‘Makarenta’ (2003) in Niger, where the many pupils chiefly use the surface: “They don't go to school – they go on the school… It’s the best sculpture I’ve done – it’s a kinetic sculpture, which moves.”
Not Vital (b. 1948) is a Swiss artist, who works in diverse media across installations, paintings, drawings and sculptures, which typically integrates architecture. Vital divides his time between the U.S., Niger, Italy, China and Switzerland, and his art is centred on personal impressions and experiences from around the world. This somewhat anthropological approach is also reflected in how his career is structured into sections devoted to e.g. glass blowers in Murano or paper artists in Bhutan. Vital’s work has been featured in the 49th Venice Biennale in Italy (2001), and he has held major exhibitions at prominent venues such as the Kunsthalle Bielefeld in Germany (2005), The Arts Club of Chicago in the U.S. (2006), Ullens Center For Contemporary Art in Beijing, China (2011) and the Museo d’arte di Mendrisio in Switzerland (2014-15). Not Vital was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in June 2015 in connection to the exhibition ‘AFRICA – Architecture, Culture and Identity’, where pictures and a model of Not Vital’s ‘House to Watch the Sunset’ (2005) are on display.

Italy Travel - Back To Wonderful Florence
You can't travel in northern Italy without stopping in Florence. (Partly, because it's on all the train routes!) But it is always worth a visit since it holds an almost unlimited treasure of art and architecture.
On our most recent trip we were delighted by some major, and some less known sights:

Das Habitat Marocain von Hentsch und Studer in Casablanca, von Sascha Roesler.
Sascha Roesler ist ein Architekt und Architekturtheoretiker. Aktuell hat er eine SNF-Förderprofessur für Architekturtheorie mit Schwerpunkt populäre Architektur und Urbanisierung an der accademia di architettura in Mendrisio (Schweiz) inne. Zusammen mit seinem Team forscht er interkulturell vergleichend zu passiven Formen der Klimatisierung in zeitgenössischen Städten des globalen Südens. In den Jahren zuvor war er Dozent für Architektur und Konstruktion an der ETH (Zürich und Singapur). Roesler ist Autor der ersten Wissenschaftsgeschichte der ethnografischen Forschung der modernen Architektur (“Weltkonstruktion“, Berlin 2013). 2012 wurde er mit dem Swiss Art Award in der Sparte Architektur ausgezeichnet. 2013 hat er im Architekturforum Zürich die Ausstellung “Habitat Marocain als Modell“ kuratiert.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Tucumán, República Argentina in 1974, Inés Fagalde
Busquets studied painting at the National University of Tucumán.
She has won prestigious awards in Argentina and has exhibited
her work widely including the Museum Timoteo Navarro in
Tucumán. Fagalde Busquets taught art workshops in Mendrisio,
Switzerland in 2008 and Joined Noho Gallery New York in 2011.
Her works are included in private collections in Argentina, Chile,
México, Spain, Switzerland, Boston and New York.

ABOUT THE WORK
The work of Inés Fagalde Busquets is characterized by the
obsessive way in which she uses color, texture, and form.
Designing on the canvas with spatula and brush, she produces
sensual compositions of sophisticated visual poetry. Human
connections arise through the creative journey with solitude in
the midst of multiplicity. Imaginary forms overflow with doors and
stairs while others are subjugated into abstraction. A voice tells a
story, both personal and collective, whispering questions,
awaiting our reply.

Emanuel Christ together with Christoph Gantenbein founded Christ & Gantenbein in 1998. Christ & Gantenbein is a leading architectural practice based in Basel, Switzerland. Interested in the sustainability of form, their landmark projects mix the ancient and modern in beguiling ways. The firm’s haptic approach unexpectedly challenges materials, using them in a sensitive yet versatile manner.
Their award-winning largescale renovations and expansions of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich as well as of the Kunstmuseum Basel (both 2016) cemented their position as builders of cultural space. Residential and office buildings such as the Westhof residential building in Munich (2018), the Flexible Office Building FOB Roche in Grenzach and a Mixed-use Tower in Pratteln (2016) and Opération Vaugirard social housing project in Paris, along with projects such as the Chocolate Competence Center, Lindt & Sprüngli all currently under construction. The firm recently won the competition for the renovation and expansion of the University Hospital Zurich testimony of the flexibility of their approach and their interest in handling a variety of programs and sites.
Emanuel Christ has taught at HGK Basel, ETH Studio Basel, Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, ETH Zurich and Harvard GSD. In 2018 Emanuel Christ was appointed Full Professor of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich. He studied architecture at ETH Zurich, EPF Lausanne, and HdK Berlin.

Devozione ai santi nei territori ticinesi - Puntata 442 del 10.5.2014
Una signora ci raccontava che suo marito, da poco defunto, aveva lasciato scritto nel testamento di devolvere una certa somma alla chiesa di Sant'Agata a Tremona, perché proprio alla festa di Sant'Agata, su quel colle, 60 anni prima, era sbocciato il loro amore. È solo una microstoria che però rivela qualcosa di un fenomeno straordinario: la devozione ai santi nei territori ticinesi. E di Santi parla la mostra in corso al Museo d'arte di Mendrisio. Ve la presentiamo con qualche simpatica intrusione esterna, per sottolineare ancora di più un valore che emerge fortemente nella mostra: il legame tra i santi e il territorio, tra i santi e la vita concreta delle persone, non solo nel passato, ma anche oggi .
Il prossimo 1 giugno farà tappa al FEVI di Locarno lo spettacolo Carol Wojtyla, la vera storia. Si tratta di un musical sulla vita di Giovanni Paolo II, che sta girando attualmente tutta l'Italia, con un notevole successo. Ve ne diamo un assaggio!

Il film è nato dall’incontro con Mario Botta in occasione della mostra Architecture and Memory che il Bechtler Museum of Modern Art di Charlotte, in North Carolina, da lui progettato, gli ha dedicato nel 2013. La mostra raccoglie e propone al pubblico i progetti più significativi realizzati dall’architetto svizzero, dalle prime case unifamiliari, originali espressioni della scuola ticinese, fino ai grandi edifici pubblici come biblioteche, teatri, musei, chiese e sinagoghe, realizzati in tutto il mondo. Più di novanta i lavori in mostra. Il film è un dialogo sui temi che caratterizzano la visione e la pratica di Mario Botta: il rapporto con la storia e con il territorio, il progetto degli spazi collettivi, gli incontri con i grandi protagonisti del ‘900. L’intervista, realizzata nello studio dell’architetto a Mendrisio, è arricchita da materiali fotografici, disegni e schizzi che documentano il suo “spazio della memoria”.

The film arose from an encounter with Mario Botta during the 2013 Architecture and Memory exhibit held at the Charlotte, North Carolina Bechtler Museum of Modern Art which was designed by the architect. The exhibit gathered and then proposed to the public the Swiss architect’s most significant projects spanning the gamut from his first single-family homes, original expressions of the School of Ticino, to his large public buildings, libraries, theatres, museums, churches and synagogues which have been built across the globe and features more than 90 works. The film is a dialogue on the themes which characterize Mario Botta’s vision and practice: his relationship with history and the territory, the designing of collective spaces, encounters with the leading protagonists of the 20th century. The interview, conducted in Mario Botta’s studio in Mendrisio, is replete with photographic materials, designs and sketches which document his “spaces of memory”.
