Water is a constant focus and ever flowing in Zurich; from her fountains, along the river Limmat and through Lake Zurich which is exceptionally clean and a popular swimming lake in the summer.
Music along the lake can be something as folkloric as an Alpenhorn, originally used by Swiss shepherds to call the cows from the pastures. Today is beckons tourists and residents alike to take in the awe-inspiring views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
On one nearby hill, sequestered in a forest is the Dolder Grand Hotel.

The birthplace of the dada movement, Zurich is home to Kunsthaus which means house of art which dates its origins to the 1700's. Pipilotti Rist Retrospective at Kunsthaus Zürich
Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist is internationally renowned as one of the pioneers of video art. Under the title Your Saliva is my Diving Suit in the Ocean of Pain (Dein Speichel ist mein Taucheranzug im Ozean des Schmerzes; a line from an early song by the artist and Anders Guggisberg), the Kunsthaus Zürich presents a retrospective exhibition of work by Pipilotti Rist, dating from 1986 to the present day.
The exhibition features historic key works as well as completely new works that have been created especially for the Kunsthaus. The show is conceived as a unified installation in which connections between different groups of work become evident. In the middle of the huge exhibition space, Pipilotti Rist has established a kind of collective home, bringing together around two dozen object assemblages and video sculptures from the last two decades. In the last third of the hall three video works from the 1990s are presented as large-scale projections, together with the brand new work Pixelwald (Pixelforest).
In this video, we have a look at the exhibition on the occasion of the press preview and the opening reception. We also sit down with the curator of the exhibition, Mirjam Varadinis, who provides us with an introduction to Pipilotti Rist’s work, and talks about the concept of the show, and specific works such as the artist’s new work Pixelwald.
Pipilotti Rist: Your Saliva is my Diving Suit in the Ocean of Pain. Retrospective at Kunsthaus Zürich. Press preview and Vernissage, February 25, 2016.

Tim Marlow’s Must-See August Museum Shows: Robert Delaunay at Kunsthaus Zürich
A co-founder of Orphism, or as he preferred to call it, ‘pure painting,’ Robert Delaunay led the way for abstract art by using bright hues and primary colours in a movement rooted in cubism. Kunsthaus Zürich will present a comprehensive overview of his oeuvre, honing in on the themes of Paris, early aviation, sport, and the role of colour in painting at the dawn of the modern era.
Zurich One Day Tour in Winter
Zurich One Day Tour in Winter
Zürich is the international metropolis of Switzerland, where culture, nature, business, and fun combine. With the most important highlights ranging from historical spots and natural escapes to food and shopping havens, this one-day guide will help you make the most out of your short but worthwhile stay in this vibrant and culturally rich city.
As a «metropolis of experiences» by the water, with a magnificent view of the snowcapped Alps on the horizon, Zurich offers a unique mixture of attractions – over 50 museums and more than 100 art galleries, international fashion labels and Zurich designs, and the most flamboyant and lively nightlife in Switzerland. Recreational activities range from a visit to the riverside and lakeside bathing areas in the very heart of the city, to a spectacular hike on the Uetliberg mountain.
Also for lovers of art Zurich has a lot to offer. The city alone is home to over 50 museums, some 14 of which are devoted to art. The museum of fine arts, the Kunsthaus Zürich, boasts a significant collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos. In addition, it has an extensive collection of works by Alberto Giacometti. Another highlight is the Rietberg Museum, one of the leading centers of non-European art in the world. Just a stone's throw from Zurich's main station, the Swiss National Museum – housed in an over 100 year old building reminiscent of a fairytale castle – contains the country's most comprehensive collection of exhibits relating to Swiss cultural history. Zurich's museums and galleries aren't the only places to enjoy art: visitors can also admire Giacometti's entrance hall in the main police station, the choir windows by Marc Chagall in Fraumünster abbey, or Jean Tinguely's open-air Heureka by Lake Zurich.
The lively tradition of merchant guilds in Zurich is dating back to the Middle Ages. Equally impressive are their fine guild houses and guildhalls – such as the Zunfthaus zur Waag, open since at least 1303. Like the Grossmünster church, the Lindenhof square and the Öpfelchammer restaurant in the Niederdorf, these venues are now among the city’s cherished emblems.
Zürich is home to one of Switzerland’s most vibrant market scenes, selling everything from vintage clothing to fresh fruits and vegetables and antiques. Here’s our guide to some of Zürich’s best markets, whether you’re an early bird looking to strike a bargain or just want to stroll around the aisles.
Here is the link to another video about Zurich.
There are many markets in Zurich - from fruit and vegetable markets with farmers selling their own fresh produce to flea markets with all sorts of stuff.
Fruit & Veg Market Rathausbrücke
Small market that takes place every Saturday morning. On offer: fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants, bread from the Swiss canton of Appenzell, specialities from the German region Bavaria and more.
Zurich's Medieval houses, contorted, narrow lanes and guild and town halls from the Renaissance period offer an attractive backdrop for world-class entertainment. A tour of the Old Town lets visitors experience Zurich's multifaceted past. The backdrop turns into a living history of characteristic buildings and the people that lived and acted out their lives in them.
The double towers of the Grossmünster (Great Minster) are Zurich's landmark. According to legend, Charlemagne built the towers at the location where the graves of the city saints Felix and Regula were discovered. Further sights worth seeing include the Peterskirche (Peter's Church), which has Europe's largest clockface, and the Fraumünster (Minster of Our Lady), which is known for its stained glass windows by Giacometti and Chagall.
The historic heart of Zurich, the Altstadt, or Old Town, remains the most atmospheric part of the city, with its striking 19th century buildings and winding cobblestone lanes hosting an array of modern cafes, shops and galleries. For visitors to the city, the Old Town makes the ideal starting point for a sightseeing tour of Zurich, sprawling along both sides of the River Limmat and home to many of the city’s principal tourist attractions.
Zurich's two landmark cathedrals—the medieval Fraumuenster (Church of Our Lady) and the Gothic style Grossmuenster—make navigating the Old Town easy, perched on opposite sides of the river and linked by the monumental Munster bridge. From here it’s an easy stroll to the charming Niederdorf district, crammed with quirky boutiques and hip coffee shops.
