Falconer, Oceanographic, City of the Arts and Sciences, Valencia, Spain, Europe
Falconry is the hunting of wild quarry in its natural state and habitat by means of a trained bird of prey. There are two traditional terms used to describe a person involved in falconry: a falconer flies a falcon; an austringer (German origin) flies a hawk (Accipiter and some buteos and similar) or an eagle (Aquila or similar). In modern falconry the Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) and the Harris hawk are often used. The words hawking and hawker have become used so much to mean petty traveling traders, that the terms falconer and falconry now apply to all use of trained birds of prey to catch game. In early English falconry literature, the word falcon referred to a female falcon only, while the word hawk or hawke referred to a female hawk. A male hawk or falcon was referred to as a tiercel (sometimes spelled tercel) as it was roughly one third less than the female in size. Many contemporary practitioners still use these words in their original meaning. The practice of hunting with a conditioned falconry bird is also called hawking or gamehawking. Evidence suggests that the art of falconry may have begun in Mesopotamia, with the earliest accounts dating to approximately 2000 BC. Falcon was a symbolic bird of ancient Mongol tribes. There is some disagreement about whether such early accounts document the practice of falconry (from The Epic of Gilgamesh and others) or are misinterpreted depictions of humans with birds of prey. Falconry was probably introduced to Europe around AD 400, when the Huns and Alans invaded from the East. Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1194-1250) is generally acknowledged as the most significant wellspring of traditional falconry knowledge. He is believed to have obtained firsthand knowledge of Arabic falconry during wars in the region (between June 1228-June 1229). He obtained a copy of Moamyn's manual on falconry and had it translated into Latin by Theodore of Antioch. Frederick II himself made corrections to the translation in 1241 resulting in De Scientia Venandi per Aves. King Frederick II is most recognized for his falconry treatise, De arte venandi cum avibus (The Art of Hunting with Birds). Written himself toward the end of his life, it is widely accepted as the first comprehensive book of falconry, but also notable in its contributions to ornithology and zoology. De arte venandi cum avibus incorporated a diversity of scholarly traditions from east to west, and is one of the earliest and most significant challenges to Aristotle's often flawed explanations of nature. Historically, falconry was a popular sport and status symbol among the nobles of medieval Europe, the Middle East, and Mongolian Empire. Many historical illustrations left in Rashid al Din's Compendium chronicles book described falconry of the middle centuries with Mongol images. Falconry was largely restricted to the noble classes due to the prerequisite commitment of time, money, and space. In art and in other aspects of culture such as literature, falconry remained a status symbol long after it was no longer popularly practiced. The historical significance of falconry within lower social classes may be underrepresented in the archaeological record, due to a lack of surviving evidence, especially from nonliterate nomadic and non-agrarian societies. Within nomadic societies like the Bedouin, falconry was not practiced for recreation by noblemen. Instead, falcons were trapped and hunted on small game during the winter months in order to supplement a very limited diet. In the UK and parts of Europe, falconry probably reached its zenith in the 17th century, but soon faded, particularly in the late 18th and 19th centuries, as firearms became the tool of choice for hunting (this likely took place throughout Europe and Asia in differing degrees). Falconry in the UK had a resurgence in the late 19th, early 20th century during which time a number of falconry books were published. This revival led to the introduction of falconry in North America in the early 1900s. Col R. Luff Meredith is recognized as the father of North American falconry. Throughout the 20th century, modern veterinary practices and the advent of radio telemetry (transmitters attached to free-flying birds) increased the average lifespan of falconry birds and allowed falconers to pursue quarry and styles of flight that had previously resulted in the loss of their hawk or falcon. The genus Falco is found worldwide and has occupied a central niche in ancient and modern falconry. Most falcon species used in falconry are specialized predators, most adapted to capturing bird prey such as the Peregrine Falcon and Merlin.
Skillshare: Learning from Passion and Curiosity - Malcolm Ong - WISE Spotlight 2013
The traditional way of education forces square pegs into round holes. It's a one-size-fits-all solution that forces students down a predetermined path. But learning should not be so standardized.
The session explores how Skillshare - a global community where you can learn real-world skills from incredible teachers - seeks to reunite learning with education and make it accessible to everyone. Learning should result from passion and curiosity. Students should learn by doing. And everyone is a teacher.

Xavier Bray: Demystifying El Greco: His Use of Wax, Clay, and Plaster Models
An inventory of El Greco’s studio made in 1614 at the time of his death lists some fifty models of plaster, clay, and wax. This lecture will consider how these models may have been used and the role they may have played in the creation of his quintessentially other-worldly style.
Xavier Bray has been Chief Curator at the Dulwich Picture Gallery since 2011. Previously, he was Assistant Curator of 17th- and 18th-century European paintings at the National Gallery in London, Chief Curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao, and Assistant Curator at the National Gallery in London. Among the many exhibitions he has curated or co-curated are Murillo (2013), The Sacred Made Real: Spanish Painting and Sculpture 1600–1700 (2009), Velázquez (2006), Caravaggio (2005), and El Greco (2004). He completed his doctoral dissertation, “Royal Religious Commissions as Political Propaganda in Spain under Charles III,” at Trinity College, Dublin, in 1999. He is currently working on an exhibition of Goya’s portraits, scheduled to open at the National Gallery in autumn 2015.

Andrew J. O’Shaughnessy: The Old Gamester: General John Burgoyne
Andrew J. O’Shaughnessy, Thomas Jefferson Foundation (Monticello) presents his lecture The Old Gamester: General John Burgoyne
May 2, 2018
British General John Burgoyne’s theatrical personality, manicured appearance, and work as a playwright perfectly embody the stereotype of the aristocratic dilettante. His portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, painted about 1766, is the inspiration for this lecture, which details Burgoyne’s career as a rising military star before his defeat at Saratoga, a battle often regarded as the turning point of the American Revolution.

Camille Klein, Making Africa Curator, Guggenheim Bilbao - Unravel Travel TV
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is pleased to present Making Africa – A Continent of Contemporary Design, an exhibition organized by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Vitra Design Museum, in collaboration with the German Federal Culture Foundation and the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne. The show exhibits work from a diverse range of creative fields: object and furniture design graphic arts, illustration, fashion, architecture, urban planning, craft, film, photography, as well as digital and analogue approaches; these works demonstrate the political, economic, social, cultural, and technological transformation of the continent. This evolution, especially evident in Africa, is led by a new generation of thinkers and makers, who propose multidisciplinary, innovative solutions for the continent and the world, simultaneously revolutionizing our traditional understanding of design. The works in the exhibition provide concrete answers to the question of what twenty-first century design can and should achieve. These pieces are often created in small quantities by a collective of individuals; they are typically produced de-centrally, in an urban context, and are more oriented to the process than the result. They often emerge from the informal maker culture, in which something existing is reworked or new work is produced with traditional and electronic tools. The works establish connections between the digital revolution and our analogue existence, radically rethink materials, concentrate on society rather than the market, and make bold statements about the future.

Derek Yaniger, La Fiambrera Art Gallery (Madrid)
The Way Out Wagon to Wigtown!

The Ancient City of Tyre
This symposium explores on the ancient city of Tyre, founded in 2750 B.C. by the Phoenicians, who created an alphabet and the first democracy in the world with a parliament and senate elected directly by the citizens. Tyre is the legendary birthplace of Europa, the daughter of the King of Tyre, the namesake of Europe. The city and the civilization was left in ruins by Alexander the Great who went to war against the Tyreans.
