Legends & Legacies - Pylos
Pylos warrior tomb’s tiniest treasure is its greatest wonder
While digging in Pylos, an ancient city in southwest Greece, a team of archaeologists made a stunning discovery: the tomb of a wealthy warrior that’s remained hidden and untouched for more than 3,500 years! More than 1,400 objects —many of which are gold, silver, bronze or ivory —were found buried in the tomb, which could shed light on how the Minoan culture lead to the Mycenaean civilization. The Minoan culture of the island of Crete is considered to be the “the first link in the European chain,” in the history of civilization.

The Pylos Combat Agate among the Infinite Realms
The recent discovery of the Pylos Combat Agate in a Mycenaean shaft-grave tomb dating to 1500 BC may be one of the most significant archaeological and artistic finds in decades, perhaps in centuries. The level of artistic sophistication and detail are stunning -- the more so because the piece itself is so small (just over 3.6 centimeters or 1.4 inches at is widest point) and the level of detail is so incredibly high, with some details only a fraction of a millimeter in size: incomprehensibly small, according to one of the scholars responsible for the discovery.
This amazing discovery opens a fascinating new window into the ancient world of the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures, a thousand years or more before classical Greece, and from a time largely shrouded in mystery.
The find is already requiring radical revisions to conventional narratives. But the Pylos Combat Agate may have even more astonishing secrets to reveal -- including a connection to a world-wide system of celestial metaphor upon which the world's ancient myths, scriptures and sacred stories, from virtually every culture on every continent and island, are built.
Explore the evidence which suggests that the masterful artwork on this newly-discovered gem points directly to the stars, a discovery which can help us to again perceive the message borne by this incredible artifact from humanity's distant past, which has lain buried beneath the earth for three and a half millennia, patiently waiting to be heard.

University of Cincinnati professor describes Griffin Warrior archaeological find in Greece
University of Cincinnati archaeologists are the talk of the art world after they released details of items found in a 3,500-year-old tomb believed to belong to a Greek warrior. Professor Jack Davis and his wife Sharon Stocker are leading the project, which found the remains Davis believes date back to 1500 B.C. They've named him the Griffin Warrior. The dig also revealed thousands of objects --including gold and bronze items -- caked in dirt and and limestone.

Scientists Unearthed A 3,500 Year Old Tomb That’s Rewritten The History Of Western Civilization
It’s a damp Thursday morning on a Greek hillside in May 2015, and two archaeologists are excavating an apparently unpromising site close to the world-famous Palace of Nestor. Part of a team from the University of Cincinnati, the researchers have dug a three-foot hole in the unyielding clay – but they have nothing to show…

During the Bronze Age around 3,500 years ago, two people in Greece were so important they were afforded a lavish burial with riches that most people can only dream of in their lifetime. The tombs were located in Pylos, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and were found to have been once coated in gold leaf on the inside and containing thousands of pieces of treasure. Archaeologists from the University of Cincinnati (UC) have dubbed the beehive-shaped coffins Tholos VI and Tholos VII which measure 12 metres (39 feet) and 8.5 metres (28 feet) respectively. Much of the treasure had been looted, but what remains could hold clues about the formative years of ancient Greece. Among the items was a gold pendant with a carving of Hathor, an Egyptian goddess who was a protector of the dead. At the time of the unknown people’s death, Greece had just, or was soon to, conquer Egypt, leading to the crumbling of the Egyptian empire and the beginning of the Greek empire. Jack Davis, head of UC’s classics department, said: “Its discovery is particularly interesting in light of the role she played in Egypt as protectress of the dead. A gold ring was found which included the depiction of two bulls flanked by sheaves of grain. Mr Davis said: “It’s an interesting scene of animal husbandry — cattle mixed with grain production. It’s the foundation of agriculture. “As far as we know, it’s the only representation of grain in the art of Crete or Minoan civilisation.” Sharon Stocker, who supervised the excavation, said the discovery could provide major insights into the formative years of the ancient Greeks. Ms Stocker said: “I think these are probably people who were very sophisticated for their time. “They have come out of a place in history where there were few luxury items and imported goods. And all of a sudden at the time of the first tholos tombs, luxury items appear in Greece. “You have this explosion of wealth. People are vying for power,” she said. “It’s the formative years that will give rise to the Classic Age of Greece.” Trending “If you look at a map, Pylos is a remote area now. You have to cross mountains to get here. Until recently, it hasn’t even been on the tourist path. “But if you’re coming by sea, the location makes more sense. It’s on the way to Italy. What we’re learning is that it’s a much more central and important place on the Bronze Age trade route.” “It was like going back to the Mycenaean Period. They had placed them by hand in the walls of the tombs and we were taking them out by hand.”

16th Century Greek Fortress Hosts New Archaeological Museum
A new archaeological museum for Pylos, SW Peloponnese, will be inaugurated on Saturday at a building within the 16th-century fortress of Niokastro (“new castle”). The museum will house the ever-expanding collection of antiquities from the area of Messinia. The historic fortress in the NW section of Pylos, built in 1573 by the Ottoman Turks, will “serve as a multi-purpose facility housing monuments, museums, and exhibits that complement each other,” the ministry said. The new Archaeological Museu...
