Celje Old Castle - Celjski Grad - Drone Video
Celje Old Castle, which was built by Vovbržans above the old square in the second half of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century, was taken over by Lords Žovneški after the death of the last Vovbržan. The new owners changed their names to the Counts of Celje after having moved to Celje and turned the castle into a modern residential building.
They also built a 23-metre high four-storey tower that was later named Friderich’s Tower. After the end of the Counts of Celje era, the appearance and purpose of the castle were changed on several occasions: the roofing was taken off and quarry stones were used to build the Novo Celje Mansion; the castle was also used as quarry. In the mid 19th century, Styria nobility took over the tower and the endeavours for its renovation started after the Celje Museum Society was established in 1882 and that continues to this day.
Celje Old Castle received new premises of the modern Tourist Information Centre and Veronika Café. Friderich’s Tower has also been restored, and this makes it an even friendlier tourist point. The permanent exhibition of the Celje Regional Museum reveals the rich history of the Counts of Celje. If you want to explore the castle and its history by yourself, there are many information boards to help you.
Celje Old Castle turns into a venue of the traditional medieval event called “The Land of Celje Invites You” (Dežela Celjska vabi) every last Saturday in August.

Coffee time! Slovenia: Celje
Hello my Beloved!
How are you doing today?
I decided one day, that I want to visit Celje. That is the third largest city in Slovenia. It’s very beautiful.
The roads there aren’t so crowded. You are fast there. When you go from main road, center is not far away. It’s easy to find it.
I parked near the center. All buildings are so historical – all in this beautiful rich colors and shapes.
I stopped to refresh with juice and this cute dog came to me! On another side of the coffee shop was shop with health food. Streets are so colorful and wide. Awesome!
City was full of tourists. I didn’t expect that.
Day was so beautiful sunny. I enjoyed everything. I didn’t go there to find something particular.
I was already once in the Celje. Not once! Once like a tourist. We went to all museums, old castle on the hill…
#Celje, Italian and German Cilli, city, central #Slovenia, on the river #Savinja. Founded as Claudia Celeia by the Roman emperor Claudius in the 1st century.
The appearance of Celje discreetly combines Antique and Medieval heritage and a modern urban environment. Well-preserved paved Roman streets, magnificent castles and the remnants of the Medieval walls in the city center bear witness to its rich history that dates back to the Celts and Romans.
I so much enjoyed exploring around!
I also found the perfect coffeeshop Kavarna Miško Knjižko ( Books, by the river, vegan coffee, cozy… pure perfection!
There are sites, that you can learn more about Celje!
I really recommend visiting it! It’s so lovely city. I’m sourly going back for coffee and more exploring! There is so much more to see!
Lovely sweet day!
Ly♥

Forensic reconstruction of the face of Ulrich II of Celje
Video: Igor Dolinar
© Narodni muzej Slovenije, 2012
[THE PAST UNDER THE MICROSCOPE]
The last Count of Celje, Ulrich II of Celje, died in Belgrade 1456 by beheading. He had no legal descendants. Written sources that report his appearence are scarce and obviously biased so it is really hard to imagine his looks.
Ulrich´s skull, which is now in The Celje Regional Museum, was used for forensic reconstruction of his face.
Scientists from Institute of Anthropology at the University of Freiburg made a reconstruction in years 2010-2012 using detailed three-dimensional CT scan of the skull.
