Robert Arpin
Robert J. Arpin grew up in Maine in a family that spoke French. When his family moved to Woonsocket, RI they settled into yet another community that was predominantly French-speaking. Arpin retained his French throughout his life and delighted in his visit to France while deployed during the Korean War. He credits his experiences in the Navy for instilling in him a love of travel. His wife opened a travel agency and the couple traveled the world together.
Arpin joined the Navy in March of 1945. On his way across the Pacific he crossed the international dateline and lost a day—his birthday—which became a family joke. He had hoped to be a cook but instead was assigned to gunnery duty and stationed in Okinawa at the very end of WWII. To his surprise, as they landed in Okinawa he and his fellow sailors were shot at by Japanese who were not aware that the war had ended. He went through a typhoon on Okinawa, all the tents they were living in blew away, and they ended up living in caves for shelter until more permanent housing was provided.
In 1951 Arpin was reactivated to serve in the Korean War. This time he served on a tanker ship that supplied American ships with fuel.

Better Qualified has helped thousands build, manage, and monitor their credit since 2006. Our staff of credit experts works diligently to attack derogatory accounts, while advising you towards building a better credit score. Better Qualified works closely with collections attorneys to comb through all of your 3rd party collections in search of violations. When an account is sold to a 3rd party, often times the collection company will violate set regulations. This leaves the consumer paying more than they have to or paying for something that isn’t theirs. Our collection attorneys have not only gotten 3rd party and medical collections removed from our clients reports, but have also succeeded in obtaining cash settlements for some clients as well. My Old School Documentary Trailer (Abandoned Woonsocket Middle/High School)
A documentary film tracing the history of New England's largest abandoned school, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.
A film by Jason Allard and Scott Gabrielson.
OldSchoolWoonsocket.com
When we found out that the school we both attended in our hometown was closed for good, we knew something had to be done to preserve its history and memories. Constructed in 1914, the Woonsocket High School housed the minds of several generations that went off and changed the world.
In 1973, after numerous additions to the building, the school was converted into the largest junior high school in New England, housing students in grades 7 through 9. In 1987, it became a middle school for students in grades 6 - 8. In 2009 its doors closed for good when a new school was built just down the street. Since the school was being added to with limited space, it made for strange hallways, doorways to nowhere, and nooks and crannies all over the building. It has one of the most confusing layouts of any school.
Our film crew was granted exclusive access to the abandoned school, which was left virtually untouched since the doors closed on its last day in December 2009. We spent over 30 hours inside the school capturing the beauty of the building we once called home. When we went into the school to film, we mapped out each location and had to set up a base camp in the old auditorium. This place is that big.
We gathered numerous interviews with former faculty, staff, students, and city officials discussing everything from the building itself to the cultural revolutions it endured. My Old School isn't just a look back at this one school, it's a tribute to everyone's school experiences.
