Crete | The Architecture Of Crete
Crete has a warm climate, and the island's architecture reflects that. You're going to see a lot of what looks like mediaeval architecture around, and that's exactly what it is. Most of the distinctive buildings went up in Crete under the Venetian rule in the 16th and 17th centuries, and you might be forgiven for thinking you're in Venice or some other port in Italy.
Castle enthusiasts will also enjoy Crete, which has several outstanding examples of massive fortifications, especially in Heraklion and Rethymno. There is also a strong Ottoman Turkish tradition, which you can see in the few mosques and monuments preserved in Heraklion.
It's a good idea to walk around the castles, to get an impression of their sheer strength and size, and to imagine the ferocious battles between the Venetians and the Turks over these very ramparts.

There are also some more recent 19th mansions in and around Heraklion and Chania. These have shady courtyards peculiar to Crete. Some have been converted into smart cafes or restaurants, where you can directly experience the leisurely life of past times. So once we're refreshed, we can continue.

Τι συνδέει την Καπνικαρέα µε τα Προπύλαια; Ποια τεκμήρια ιστορίας µπορεί να δει κανείς στο Ιστορικό Αρχείο και ποια στο Μουσείο Ιστορίας του Πανεπιστημίου; Έχετε επισκεφτεί τη Βιβλιοθήκη της Νομικής και το κτίριο του Παλαιού Χημείου; Πόσες φορές έχετε περάσει µπροστά από τη Φοιτητική Λέσχη χωρίς να το ξέρετε; Γνωρίζετε την ομάδα δίκαιο και Τέχνη και το µμουσικό σύνολο Μέλος;

SUMMARY
=======
Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, Kríti ['kriti]; Ancient Greek: Κρήτη, Krḗtē) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the 88th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica. Crete and a number of surrounding islands and islets constitute the region of Crete (Greek: Περιφέρεια Κρήτης), one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece. The capital and the largest city is Heraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065.
Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own poetry and music). It was once the centre of the Minoan civilisation (c. 2700–1420 BC), which is the earliest known civilisation in Europe. The palace of Knossos lies in Crete.
