8th of August: Hopkinsville | Kentucky Life | KET
In Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Phillip Payne, who was involved with the famed 8th of August celebrations in nearby Crofton, Kentucky, traces their history in Christian County back to the beginning of the 20th century. The spirit of the 8th of August festival is kept alive today by the Minority Economic Development Initiative and its historic African-American business tour. The tour features 20 businesses and schools, some started by free slaves. Dave Shuffett climbs aboard a haywagon for a tour, with MEDI executive director Henry Snorton and Christian County historians William Turner and Matt Snorton serving as our guides.
The 8th of August is both an Emancipation celebration and a homecoming that has been a tradition since the 1860s.

The Trail of Tears was a series of forced relocations of Native Americans in the United States from their ancestral homelands in the Southeastern United States, to areas to the west (usually west of the Mississippi River) that had been designated as Indian Territory. The forced relocations were carried out by government authorities following the passage of the Indian Removal Act in 1830. The relocated peoples suffered from exposure, disease and starvation while en route to their new designated reserve, and many died before reaching their destinations. The forced removals included members of the Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Ponca nations. The phrase Trail of Tears originates from a description of the removal of many Native American tribes, including the infamous Cherokee Nation relocation in 1838.Between 1830 and 1850, the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, Seminole, and Cherokee people (including mixed-race and black slaves who lived among them) were forcibly removed from their traditional lands in the Southeastern United States, and relocated farther west. Those Native Americans who were relocated were forced to march to their destinations by state and local militias. The Cherokee removal in 1838 (the last forced removal east of the Mississippi) was brought on by the discovery of gold near Dahlonega, Georgia in 1828, resulting in the Georgia Gold Rush. Approximately 2,000–8,000 of the 16,543 relocated Cherokee perished along the way.

Kentucky Museum Historic Native American Traveling Trunk
This teacher's kit was developed to assist educators in enriching their Kentucky histroy curriculum. The guides and activities are designed for 4th and 5th graders, but can be used for 3rd through 6th grade. The trunk includes information about clothing, food, shelter, material culture, and famous leaders from each of the three tribes. Posters, maps, information sheets, artifacts, art projects, and folk tales are available in order for students to better understand the culture of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee Indians. While these three Native groups did have similarities, each tribe has a narrative of its own that contributed to the creation, expansion, and history of Kentucky.

This was one of histories more neglected UFO stories, though several shows covered it after us. One of the few UFO tales where the witnesses were fully armed and dangerous. In an interesting piece of casting Lucky Sutton - the main witness was actually played by his real life son, who was also interviewed. In terms of production we were sent to a farmhouse only to discover it was unfurnished. The crew made a quick run to a local Salvation army where we purchased three rooms worth of furniture and small props. After the shoot we returned to the Salvation Army at three AM and left the furniture outside for them to sell again. The original alien costumes were made in Baltimore, but were almost unusable. John Garrett and I spent an entire night hot gluing pieces of car floormats and other nick knacks to the costume to make it at least servicable. This was probably the hardest and most exhausting segment - between costume fixing, furniture buying and shooting we were awake for about forty straight hours.

Total Solar Eclipse LIVE 2017 - FULL VIDEO (Hopkinsville, Kentucky)
We drove up from Dallas to Hopkinsville, KY to view the Total Solar Eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017! We drove around Hopkinsville beforehand, the town was alive! There were lines of people queuing to get a offee from the only store open in town. We drove a few miles out to watch the eclipse from a Flying J in Oak Grove (18750 Herndon Oak Grove Rd, Oak Grove, KY 42262) so we could get ahead of the traffic. It was a weird experience to see almost total darkness in the middle of the day! A great experience! We came prepared and bought eclipse glasses on ebay beforehand, otherwise, you may burn out your retinas LOL.... The traffic afterwards was TERRIBLE! Almost 24 hour gridlock, luckily we were ahead of it, but stopped at the Dukes of Hazzard museum in Nashville and they all caught up with us again! It was bad all the way to Birmingham, AL. I hear Hopkinsville ran out of toilet paper that day LOL!

A solar eclipse occurs when an observer (on Earth) passes through the shadow cast by the Moon which fully or partially blocks (occults) the Sun. This can only happen when the Sun, Moon and Earth are nearly aligned on a straight line in three dimensions (syzygy) during a new moon when the Moon is close to the ecliptic plane. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured.
If the Moon were in a perfectly circular orbit, a little closer to the Earth, and in the same orbital plane, there would be total solar eclipses every new moon. However, since the Moon's orbit is tilted at more than 5 degrees to the Earth's orbit around the Sun, its shadow usually misses Earth. A solar eclipse can only occur when the moon is close enough to the ecliptic plane during a new moon. Special conditions must occur for the two events to coincide because the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic at its orbital nodes twice every draconic month (27.212220 days) while a new moon occurs one every synodic month (29.530587981 days). Solar (and lunar) eclipses therefore happen only during eclipse seasons resulting in at least two, and up to five, solar eclipses each year; no more than two of which can be total eclipses.Total eclipses are rare because the timing of the new moon within the eclipse season needs to be more exact for an alignment between the observer (on Earth) and the centers of the Sun and Moon. In addition, the elliptical orbit of the Moon often takes it far enough away from Earth that its apparent size is not large enough to block the Sun entirely. Total solar eclipses are rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path on the Earth's surface traced by the Moon's full shadow or umbra.
An eclipse is a natural phenomenon. However, in some ancient and modern cultures, solar eclipses were attributed to supernatural causes or regarded as bad omens. A total solar eclipse can be frightening to people who are unaware of its astronomical explanation, as the Sun seems to disappear during the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes.
Since looking directly at the Sun can lead to permanent eye damage or blindness, special eye protection or indirect viewing techniques are used when viewing a solar eclipse. It is technically safe to view only the total phase of a total solar eclipse with the unaided eye and without protection; however, this is a dangerous practice, as most people are not trained to recognize the phases of an eclipse, which can span over two hours while the total phase can only last a maximum of 7.5 minutes for any one location. People referred to as eclipse chasers or umbraphiles will travel to remote locations to observe or witness predicted central solar eclipses.

Russellville, Kentucky, in Logan County hosts what has become the largest of the 8th of August celebrations in the state, partly because of the West Kentucky African American Heritage Museum, which draws tourists and returning family alike.
Historian Michael Morrow details Russellville's rich and troubled history for African Americans, from slavery and the Civil War to segregation, mob lynchings, and the civil rights movement. The 8th of August celebration here is relatively recent, having started about 40 years ago, and organizer Paulette Smith explains how the celebration, with its music, church services, and basketball and softball tournaments, helps knit the community together.
The 8th of August celebration is both an Emancipation celebration and a homecoming that has been a tradition since the 1860s.
