Welcome to one of Tokyo’s BEST places to buy Anime, Manga, Disney, Video Game and other Otaku merchandise! This is Nagano Broadway, which is famous for the first Mandarake store selling Manga and merchandise which quickly spread out so much that it attracted other otaku stores turning the Nakano Broadway shopping mall into a geek paradise! Toys, manga, action figures, robots, anime, etc etc, all under one roof in Tokyo at the Nakano Broadway.
How to get to Nakano Broadway: Simplest way is from Shinjuku. If you can get to Shinjuku, Nakano is just one express stop away via the Chuo line. 5 minutes travel time on the JR Line from Shinjuku to Nakano. From the station, another 5 minutes to the Nakano Broadway building (see first part of video)

These are my carefully selected 10 top things to do in Nakano, the secret budget district of Tokyo. Tokyo is overrun by tourism, luckily for you there is an alternative nobody is talking about yet. The Nakano district is just 5 minutes west by train from Shinjuku and a hidden gem in Tokyo. Nakano is famous for being the oldskool Anime, Manga & Gaming mecca compared to the hugely popular Akihabara electronic town district plus is it extremely cozy and welcoming compared to obvious tourist hot spots of Tokyo.

Nakano is especially great to visit during a rainy day in Tokyo since Nakano's primary shopping street and the Nakano Broadway complex, which houses 250 stores, are all indoor. Nakano Broadway includes super fun places, super cheap Japanese snack shops, plenty of arcades and comic book stores to keep you entertained throughout the day.
Whoever says Tokyo is expensive is an amateur traveler and is just doing it wrong. Most travelers go to Shinjuku, Shibuya & Ginza which are quite expense. Together with my friends Heather, Kelly and Bobby we enjoyed an incredibly cheap evening food adventures in Nakano.
Start your adventure in Nakano by walking through the Sun Mall shopping street until you end up at the Nakano Broadway complex where you can browse through at least 30 Mandarake store. Mandarake is THE pre-owned comic book dealer of Tokyo since 1987. Every Mandarake store has a different theme. For the most unique Mandarake store head to the 3rd floor where you can enter a special shrine that sells vintage tin toys.
The best part of the Nakano Broadway complex is the basement. Here you'll find gigantic cheap grocery stores with incredible products ranging from household items to dirt cheap fish and delicious sushi pre-made meals.
Near the back of the basement you'll find the Daily Chico soft-serve ice cream store that sell this ridiculous 8 flavors, 40-centimeter-tall soft-serve ice cream cone which makes for hilarious selfies and sells for 480 YEN, $4 USD!
In the evening I recommend you explore the extreme cozy back alleys on the east side of the Sun Mall shopping street. This area houses plenty of sake bars, karaoke shops and izakaya’s (Japanese drinking spots) but above all wagyu beef and steak houses. Wagyu is expensive fat marbled beef that will melt on the tip of your tongue. After some digging I found that Horumon Yakiniku offers the best bang for your buck. Their wagyu beef was mouth-watering delicious.
Another place to visit is Terrie's Dog Cafe. Entrance is FREE but does require you purchase a plain tea or coffee with rates starting at only 300 YEN, $2.80 USD. Terrie's Dog Cafe is a shelter for rescue dogs so please do the right thing and support these poor little cuties.
My favorite part of Nakano is the atmosphere, it is cozy, friendly and fun, especially on a rainy day. With the massive amounts of indoor shops there is something to do for everyone. Do not hesitate and make the 5-minute train journey just west of Shinjuku main station.
In conclusion, Nakano is the definition of a cheap day in Tokyo. Especially for travelers on a serious budget. Do not pay tourist prices in the obvious tourist districts of Tokyo. Head out of the tourist comfort zone and explore the lesser known areas. You won't be disappointed!

#Nakano Broadway is a large shopping center in Nakano, Tokyo geared towards #otaku (or geek) culture. It provides a good alternative to the popular #Akihabara district since you can avoid the duty-free shops, avoid tourist traps and find old-school anime merch.

In this video I'm walking through 4 floors of the massive Nakano Broadway shopping center. Nakano Broadway is filled with shops catering to Otaku, selling manga, anime and vintage toys. It also houses everything from a food supermarket in the basement as well as several high-end watch shops, fashion stores, fortunetellers and everything in between.
This video was shot in May 2018 with a DJI Osmo Mobile 2 and Huawei Mate 9. 4K/UHD resolution.

This shopping center has lots of stuff, including shops filled with figures and a system of Mandarake shops woven throughout (each one specializing in different goods). Definitely check out the Mandarake shop with the Gunpla!

Nakano Broadway (中野ブロードウェイ) is a shopping complex in Tokyo famous for its many stores selling anime items and idol goods, inlcuding more than a dozen small Mandarake stores, which specialize in manga and anime related collectibles. The shopping complex is a short walk from Nakano Station, which is five minute train ride from Shinjuku via the JR Chuo Line.
There are four levels of shopping at the Nakano Broadway. The second and third levels are where the many anime and idol related shops are located. Here, shoppers can find manga, magazines, collectors' items, animation character figurines, idol merchandise, game consoles, video games, animation/idol related CDs, as well as little souvenirs to take home, such as idol playing cards or key chains.
The ground level of the Nakano Broadway has shops selling clothes, shoes, tidbits and second hand goods. The basement level is a marketplace, where the locals shop for their groceries. Products on sale range from fruits and vegetables to meat and seafood.

Leading to the Nakano Broadway from Nakano Station is the Nakano Sunmall, a 225 meter long, covered shopping street with a wide variety of shops, including food joints, cafes, watch dealers, jewelers, fashion boutiques, pharmacies, game centers, book stores and others.
On the side streets branching off from the shopping street are food alleys with various restaurants, including many izakaya (Japanese style pub/eatery), that serve all different kinds of food. Here one can experience the atmosphere of the bustling food crowd while taking a break from the shopping.
