南澳縣位於閩、粵、台三省海面交叉點，是廣東省唯一的海島縣。它由主島南澳島和附近22個島嶼組成，總面積130.91平方公里，其中主島面積128平方公里，海域面積4600平方公里，總人口72449人，素有“粵東海上明珠”的美譽。距廣東省汕頭經濟特區僅11.8海裡，東距台灣高雄160海裡，北距廈門97海裡，西南距香港180海裡，處在這三大港口城市的中心點，瀕臨西太平洋國際主航線。地理位置十分優越。自古今來，南澳是東南沿海一帶通商的必經泊點和中轉站，早在明朝就已有“海上互市”的稱號。南澳歷來是海防重鎮，兵家必爭之地。南澳有豐富的自然資源。一是港灣資源。南澳島岸線曲折，長達77公里，為廣東沿海各地之冠，大小港灣66處，其中的煙墩灣，長山尾、竹棲肚、後江灣等七處，可闢建萬噸級泊位碼頭。二是旅遊資源。南澳有保存完好的海島自然景色，蘊藏著豐富的旅遊資源，具有“海、史、山、廟”立體交叉的特徵，全島可供開發旅遊的沙灘面積達200多萬平方米，擁有青澳灣省級旅遊度假區、烏嶼省級候島自然保護區、黃花山國家森林公園、亞洲海島第一大風電場等一大批景區景點，島上已發現的文物古跡50多處，寺廟30處，所有這些構成南澳多姿多彩的旅遊景觀，是建設旅遊島的理想之地。三是水產資源。南澳島可供開發的漁場5萬平方公里，周圍近海漁場和台灣淺灘漁場的各種魚、蝦、貝、藻類有1300多個品種，名貴海產品有魷魚、龍蝦、石斑魚、海膽、紫菜等，其中尤以宅魷、澎菜馳名國內外。沿島水深10米以內的海域，水質好，浮遊生物種群多，避風條件佳，是發展海水養殖的良好基地。四是風力資源。南澳風況屬世界最佳之列，年平均風速達倒8.54米/秒，有效風速時數達7000多小時。據專家測算，島上風力發電總裝機容量可達20萬千瓦。
