南禅寺 : Walking Around Nanzenji Temple（Kyoto, Japan）
早朝の南禅寺周辺を散策いたしました。人通りも少なくゆっくりと朝の京都を満喫できました。
Nanzen-Ji also called Zuiryusan, is one of the most well known Rinzai Zen temples in Japan.
Emperor Kameyama loved this beautiful place so much that in 1264 he built his detached palace here.
Later he became a student of the Zen Master Busshin Daimin Kokushi, and he dedicated the palace as a Zen temple in 1291.
A characteristic of the history of this temple is that its abbot was always chosen as the best Rinzai Zen Master in each period.
As Nanzenji was above the Go-San SyStem, its influence on Japanese culture Was indeed great.
Nanzen ji, Kyoto - Letters from Japan
Nanzen-ji is a Renzai Zen Temple located in northeastern Kyoto and is one of the most well-known in Japan. Nanzen-ji can be accessed via the Keage Station on the Tozai line using the Kyoto subway. Once you exit the station, you can follow the path located across the street from the station.

Places to Go: Nanzen-ji Temple
Formerly known as Zenrinzen-ji, Nanzen-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, it is one of the most well-known Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. It was originally Emperor Kameyama’s retirement villa and it includes a temple hall and garden centered around a pond. Nanzen-ji is home to a sanmon (a great gate that holds importance within Japanese Buddhist temples), an exquisite European style canal and also multiple sub-temples, each with its own charm. You can enter the Nanzen-ji complex free of charge, but the Abbot’s Quarters and each sub-temple has its own entrance fee. The area is one of Kyoto’s best spot to view the romantic red and orange autumn leaves in the fall.

This temple, a subtemple of the Nanzenji, contains the mausoleum of Emperor Kameyama, founder of Nanzenji. Tucked behind the 1890 aqueduct of the Lake Biwa Canal, the garden is classically beautiful and well maintained Moss, a pond with a small stone bridge, a small waterful, all the features one expects to find in such a garden. Well worth a look in.

南禅院の庭園は、鎌倉時代末期を代表する池泉回遊式庭園です。往時の面影を残し、深い樹林で包まれた幽玄閑寂の赴きは格別で、大正12年(1923)に国の史跡及び名勝に指定されています。
庭に広がる池は曹源池と呼ばれ、龍の形になぞらえて作られたとも言われ、向かって左奥には滝石組が組まれ、池の中には蓬莱島や心字島が設けられています。
15世紀に作成された、南禅寺の由緒や歴史を記した『天下南禅寺記』によれば築庭当初には、吉野の桜、難波の葦、竜田の楓等が移植され、井出の蛙も放たれたと記され、往時の雅な雰囲気が思い起こされます。
Nanzenji Temple (南禅寺）, Kyoto City
Nanzenji Temple （南禅寺） is a Zen Temple belonging to the Rinzai Sect-Nanzenji School of Zen Buddhism. This temple is located in the upper/central east side of Kyoto city, at the foothills of the Higashiyama mountains. At one time this temple is considered above the five great Zen temples of Kyoto City.
This temple has a large Gate at it's entrance called sanmon, and it is almost as large as the Gate at Tofukuji Temple. In the eastern permises of the temple, there is a roman aquaduct style elevated brick waterway, belonging to a Lake Biwa (Biwako) Canal.
There are thirteen sub temples in the temple complex.
Things to Do: Have tea at Nanzen-ji Temple
One of the charms of Nanzen-ji is the beautiful tea room near the front of the temple complex. For just 500 yen you can sit in a beautiful room with an outstanding view of a waterfall and drink hot green tea. The matcha tea also comes with a traditional Japanese sweet, or wagashi. There is no time limit, so you can sit in the room, relax, sip on your tea and unwind for as long as you wish.

Nanzen-Ji in Kyoto, Japan is a vast complex with numerous subtemples, gardens and shrines sprawling up the hillside, including another pebble garden, hiking trails, waterfalls and a mountain glen.
Nanzen-ji was bestowed the title of “First Temple of the Land” and is considered by many to be the most famous and important Zen Temple in the world. It's designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nanzenin is a smaller sub-temple behind the main Nanzen-ji, and it's one of the oldest and yet one of the least well-known sub temples, perhaps because it's slightly hidden away. It started out as a retirement villa for the Emperor Kameyama.
Perhaps the main feature of Nanzenin is the small pond and quiet moss garden surrounded by Momiji trees and azaleas. And the pond has several tiny islets including one that shaped like the character for heart.
The pond garden was built in the strolling style representing the late Kamakura period and retains an image of beautiful scenery surrounded by deep forest with an exceptional atmosphere of peace and tranquility. It was designated a national historic and scenic site in 1923.
It's a very small garden that you could walk around in five minutes and exit but it's so pretty that it's certainly worth stopping and standing and enjoying each of the views from its own particular angle, which of course is the way these gardens are designed. They are strolling gardens, so the idea is to walk along with your eyes open and stop here and there, look this way, look that way, and enjoy all the different views as they unfold.
Zen Garden at Nanzenji Temple, Kyoto City
Nanzenji Temple is a Zen Temple and once considered as to have higher status than the five great Zen temples (gozan) of Kyoto City. As with many Zen temples, Nanzenji also has a great temple garden. There are two gardens, one outside the main monastery and one inside the monastery itself. The outside garden also acts as a back drop to the tea ceremony hall inside the monastery. Enjoy!!!

Nanzen-ji was bestowed the title of “First Temple of the Land‚” and is considered by many to be the most famous and important Zen Temple in the world. It's designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sometimes you'll get lucky and come across a beautiful scene like this that just has a strong personal attraction for some reason -- you just can't take your eyes off it, you can't leave it, you just have to stop and look, and walk one way, walk around the other way, come back again and just drop everything and enjoy this vista.
The rocks, of course, are not carved rocks. They are natural rocks but they are carefully placed into each spot so that it looks natural and yet it's been shaped and cultivated in an ideal way.
You can easily walk into Maruyama Park from a couple of nearby famous temples of Yasaka and Kiyomizu. Chion-in is on the north edge of the park. So this is really one of the most popular strolls in all of Kyoto. We're in the eastern part of Kyoto, the Higashiyama district.

Kyoto, Japan Ginkakuji, Honen, Heian, Nanzen and Chion Temple Gardens
Kyoto is famous for the beautiful temple gardens that we explore in this series. We've arrived at Ginkaku-ji which is one of the prettiest of all of the temples and gardens in Kyoto. It's in the tsukiyama style of hillside garden.
A dramatic entry lined by tall hedges leads into another world, a lyrical dreamscape of ponds surrounded by gardens, dotted with statues and linked together by exquisite bamboo railings that guide you along the very pleasant and calm foot paths.
Try to arrive when it opens at 9:00am to enjoy its tranquility undisturbed by the busloads that are soon to come.
The Japanese garden is a miniature and idealized view of nature and this style of garden is meant for strolling for moving around from one place to another and as you go there will be scenes revealed and then left behind -- it's hide and reveal, appearing then disappearing.
These gardens are not laid out straight and nor do they have a single focus. Instead the paths are designed with curves and bands and they'll go up and down. It's made to look natural but of course everything here is carefully designed.
And then we're taking a stroll on the Philosophers Path. It's just about 1 mile long and very pleasant. You go along this canal and there are gardens, there are private homes, there's a beautiful hillside and more of these lingering fall colors. There are little benches scattered here and there where you could sit down if you wish.
From Ginkakuji and Honen we're traveling west a few blocks to another great temple with a beautiful garden and pond.
Arriving at Heian-jingo. This is actually one of the newer temples in Kyoto, built at the end of the 19th century, and of course built in a very traditional style. This kind of architecture really dates back 300, 400 or even 500 years.
This reproduction of an Imperial Palace was constructed in 1895, complete with shrines and a vast garden complex with ponds, islands and Chinese-Japanese-style landscaping. Continuing to Nanzen-Ji, a vast complex with numerous subtemples, gardens and shrines sprawling up the hillside, including another pebble garden, hiking trails, waterfalls and a mountain glen.
Nanzen-ji was bestowed the title of “First Temple of the Land‚” and is considered by many to be the most famous and important Zen Temple in the world. It's designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Finally to Chion-in, the main temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism which has millions of followers throughout the country and 7000 other temples but Chion-in is the main temple where this branch of Buddhism was created by Honen way back in the 12th century.

In Tenju-an, when the green leaves and water glasses were beautiful, a priest was praying at Buddhist memorial service.
Walking in the eastern parts of the city, you are never far away from world famous temples or gardens, and Nanzen-ji is one of them. Some of the old subtemples remain and a few of them are open to public, like the Nanzen-in and Tenju-an gardens. Nanzen-in used to be a part of the emperors palace garden, and Tenju-an is the first place that was converted into a temple by the emperor. The birth place of the Nanzenji. Both Nanzen-in and Tenju-an has been destroyed and rebuilt so many times that it is hard to tell if there is anything left of the original designs, but they are beautiful places no matter what, and has been designated as important historical gardens in Kyoto.

臨済宗南禅寺派大本山の寺院である。山号は瑞龍山、寺号は
太平興国南禅禅寺（たいへいこうこくなんぜんぜんじ）で
ある。本尊は釈迦如来、開基（創立者）は亀山法皇、開山
（初代住職）は無関普門（大明国師）。日本最初の勅願禅寺
であり、京都五山および鎌倉五山の上におかれる別格扱いの
寺院で、日本の全ての禅寺のなかで最も高い格式をもつ。
南禅寺の建立以前、この地には、後嵯峨天皇が文永元年
（1264年）に造営した離宮の禅林寺殿（ぜんりんじどの）
があった。「禅林寺殿」の名は、南禅寺の北に現存する
浄土宗西山禅林寺派総本山の禅林寺（永観堂）に由来
する。この離宮は「上の御所」と「下の御所」に分かれ、
うち「上の御所」に建設された持仏堂を「南禅院」と
称した。現存する南禅寺の別院・南禅院はその後身である。
